fix(edi): store valid 856s through the required-KDE gate - #3818
A valid 856 got HTTP 201 with accepted: 0 from both POST /api/v1/ingest/edi and POST /api/v1/ingest/edi/document, so nothing was stored. Every event failed the required-KDE gate. Existing route tests stub ingest_events, so none of them ran the gate.
Cause
The routes built KDEs under names the gate does not check:
Gate requires
/
/document
reference_document
only reference_document_number
only reference_document_number
ship_date
set
only event_date
tlc_source_reference
no field
form field dropped unless 944/945
Fix
reference_document and ship_date now come from the document.
tlc_source_reference comes from a form field on both routes and applies to every line. The user chose this over deriving it from N1*SF: X12 856 does not say who assigned the lot, and a pass-through distributor ships lots it did not assign.
A missing or blank value, or an 856 with no reference document at all, is a logged 422 edi_856_missing_required_kdes with a rejection_id. The check runs before the ISA13 is reserved, so the corrected resend is not a 409 replay.
Both routes now run the placeholder checks on every 856 before the ISA13 is reserved. / ran them after the reservation, so a corrected resend got a 409. A missing or bad quantity or unit, a line with no product, or a set with no ship-from or ship-to name is edi_856_missing_required_kdes. Without this, the KDE mapping would have let EDI 856 Item and units through the gate. A Codex review found this.
_record_edi_rejection now imports relative to the package. Every such 856 now takes that path, and app.edi_ingestion does not exist in the prod image.
Stored EDI documents are retained verbatim as an ingestion run, labelled edi, with the bytes in fsma.manifest_blobs.
Rejections are written to the new fsma.edi_rejections table (v143) before a rejection_id is returned. If that write fails, the response is 503 with no id.
A line the event model refuses on /, such as a lot under three characters, is now a logged 422 edi_invalid_event instead of a 500. The ISA13 is freed for the corrected resend.
quantity_override, unit_of_measure_override and product_description now count as the line's values during FSMA validation on /document.
Migration
This PR adds migration v143. The table is additive, forces RLS and is append-only for the runtime role. It's also in v111's inventory so the deploy cutover keeps its grants. The explicit deploy ships every migration since the last deploy.
Behaviour change: action needed
Existing 856 senders must now send tlc_source_reference or they get a 422. Until now they got 201 with nothing stored. On /document this 422 also applies with ?strict=false; that mode does not downgrade it to status: "rejected".
On /document, 856 quantity and unit errors now use edi_856_missing_required_kdes instead of edi_non_positive_quantity and edi_unmapped_unit_of_measure, matching /.
One value covers every line. An ASN with lots from different sources has to be split.
Verification
services/ingestion/tests/test_edi_856_real_kde_gate.py runs the real ingest_events and gate, with only storage faked.
Ingestion suite: 6354 passed, 58 skipped, 6 xfailed, 0 failed, on Python 3.11 with the locked dependencies.
Production image with Postgres, Redis and migrations, using asn_856.edi on both routes:
No field: 422 with a rejection_id, nothing stored.
Same ISA13 with the field: 201, accepted: 1, one row in fsma.cte_events.
Stored KDEs include reference_document=BOL-9001, tlc_source_reference and ship_date=2026-03-10.
Replay: 409.
Read back from Postgres on the production image: ingestion_runs rows labelled edi, their manifest_blobs bytes, and edi_rejections rows with errors and extracted fields, with RLS forced and runtime grants of SELECT and INSERT only.
The production-image run was repeated at the final code and also covered no product, no unit and no ship-from name: 422, nothing stored.
Test edits: existing 856 tests now send the field. test_856_blank_sn1_quantity_is_rejected gained a reference number so it still reaches the quantity check. test_edi_856_fixture_end_to_end now expects ship_date to be present.
Product decision
EDI stays in production. This PR updates PRD R7 and Q6, replacing the SEL-592 removal.
Merge note
#3782 also changes routes.py, including the same _record_edi_rejection import. The text matches, but expect a small conflict resolution in that hunk if nearby lines differ. The _enforce_envelope_integrity call sites are close to its changes, so check them when the second PR lands.
A valid ASN returned 201 with accepted: 0 on both EDI routes. The routes
built KDEs under names the gate does not check: reference_document_number
but not reference_document, event_date but not ship_date on /document, and
no tlc_source_reference on either route.
Map reference_document and ship_date from the document. Take
tlc_source_reference from a form field on both routes: X12 856 does not say
who assigned the lot, and the ship-from party is wrong for a pass-through
distributor. A missing value is a logged 422 before the ISA13 is reserved,
so the corrected resend is not a 409 replay.
Resolve the rejection log relative to the package, since that path now runs
for every such 856 and top-level app is another service in the prod image.

Walkthrough
The 856 ingestion routes now check for a nonblank tlc_source_reference and a reference document number before ISA13 reservation. They reject submissions that lack either value with HTTP 422. The unified endpoint applies the check to each 856 transaction set, including when strict=false. The routes pass the normalized source reference into event KDEs and line headers. Tests and intake documentation cover these requirements.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in services/ingestion/app/edi_ingestion/routes.py: _record_edi_rejection now imports rejection_log relative to the current package instead of using the absolute app.edi_ingestion path.
observed — Modified behavior in services/ingestion/app/edi_ingestion/routes.py: Adds _preflight_856_required_kdes, which rejects an 856 lacking either a caller-provided TLC source reference or an extracted reference document number. It records and raises the existing 422 missing-KDE rejection before ISA13 reservation.
observed — Modified behavior in services/ingestion/app/edi_ingestion/routes.py: ingest_edi_856 adds the optional tlc_source_reference form field, documented as required for successful 856 ingestion.
observed — Modified behavior in services/ingestion/app/edi_ingestion/routes.py: The 856 handler trims the TLC source reference and combines event-date validation with required-KDE preflight in the callback passed to envelope validation. Missing required content is therefore rejected before ISA13 is reserved, alongside date rejections.

Cover strict=false in the missing-TLC rejection test.
The missing and blank tlc_source_reference tests run only in the default strict mode. A regression that gated the 856 preflight on strict would still pass them. The current code does not gate it, so the 422 applies in both modes. The test should check that behavior.

Reject an 856 with no N1SF or N1ST name on /document.
On /api/v1/ingest/edi/document, an 856 with no N1*SF or N1*ST name passes the new preflight. The event then fails the required-KDE gate, which records it as rejected. The endpoint returns a normal response with accepted: 0. The sender receives no 422 and no rejection_id. /api/v1/ingest/edi already rejects this case in _legacy_856_placeholder_errors. Add the same check to _preflight_856_required_kdes.

The check reads the extracted names, as the event KDEs do. A location_override does not satisfy the gate, because the 856 ship_from_location KDE does not read it. Like the TLC and reference checks, the check rejects the whole interchange when one 856 set lacks a name.

Mapping the gate's KDE names let /document events through the gate, but that
route never ran the placeholder checks the / route has. An 856 with no product
or unit could then store "EDI 856 Item" or "units", which the gate cannot catch.
Run the same checks on /document before the ISA13 is reserved. These 856 errors
now use edi_856_missing_required_kdes, matching the / route.

…e-gate
Takes #3818's placeholder checks for 856 on /document, so 856 no longer goes
through the document preflight table.
The other line sets had the same hole. 861, 944 and 945 could still store a
blank unit as "units", and an 861 with no quantity element as 1.0. The document
preflight now needs a positive quantity and a recognized unit on every line, so
these return edi_<set>_missing_required_kdes before the ISA13 is reserved.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The / route ran these checks after the reservation, so a corrected resend
of a rejected 856 got a 409 replay with nothing stored. Run them in the
same preflight as /document.

…13 (#3820)
* fix(edi): reject /document files the KDE gate would refuse before ISA13
/document answered 201 with accepted: 0 for every 861, 850 and 810, and
for 856, 944 and 945 documents missing a required KDE. It also stored a
synthesized "EDI <set> Item" for a line with no product id.
- Check each set's required KDEs before the ISA13 is reserved. A miss is
a logged 422, so the corrected resend is not a 409 replay.
- 861 now emits receive_date, immediate_previous_source,
reference_document and tlc_source_reference. The TLC source comes from
the caller's form field, as on 856.
- 850 and 810 always return 422. The PO date, invoice date and buyer and
seller parties are not a ship date or shipping locations.

The required-KDE gate strips strings, but the preflights did not, so a
padded blank passed them and the gate then dropped the event after the
ISA13 was reserved: 201 with accepted: 0, and a 409 on the resend.
Use the gate's presence rule in both preflights, and stop a blank override
replacing a real document value.

Reviewed the current diff against main, including the #3820 changes now included in this branch. No blocking findings.
Checked required-KDE names against emitted events; caller-supplied TLC source handling; missing, invalid and whitespace-only product/location fields; per-line quantity and unit checks; envelope/allowlist ordering before the pre-reservation callback; relative rejection-log imports; and rejection behavior in strict/advisory modes. The preflight preserves the documented fail-closed behavior for 850/810 rather than substituting commercial dates or parties for shipping KDEs.
Validation on this exact commit in an isolated checkout: 116 tests passed across test_edi_856_real_kde_gate.py, test_edi_wire_format_2974_2976_2978.py, test_edi_date_reject_resend.py, test_prod_import_path_tenant_validation.py, and test_r3_restored_fixtures_e2e.py. An additional receiving-advice probe with a whitespace ship-from name and valid GLN passed through the real gate. Existing CI backend, frontend, secrets, tenant isolation and migration checks are green.
Review limit: storage is faked in the gate tests; this review did not repeat the previously reported production-image/Postgres rehearsal. Existing ISA13 release behavior on later schema failures remains the separately tracked #3782 work.
Neither EDI route retained the uploaded file, so stored events could not be
checked against it. Both now pass the receipt CSV uploads use, labelled as
source system edi.
Rejection evidence lived in one worker's memory, so a restart or another
worker lost what a rejection_id pointed at. Rejections now go to the new
fsma.edi_rejections table (v143) before an id is issued, and a failed write
returns 503 instead of an id with nothing behind it. The table is append-only
for the runtime role, forces RLS, and is in v111's inventory so the per-deploy
cutover keeps its grants.

A blank unit override was treated as a supplied unit and rejected a valid
document. A whitespace ship-from name beat the GLN when mapping
immediate_previous_source, so the gate dropped the event after preflight had
passed it. The rejection writer now sets tenant context through the canonical
set_tenant_guc helper.

Regenerated with schema_parity_audit.py snapshot against a freshly migrated

A too-short line lot on / raised an uncaught ValidationError, so a sender got a
500 with no rejection record. It's now a logged 422 edi_invalid_event, and
raising frees the ISA13 for the corrected resend.
FSMA validation on /document ignored the overrides, so quantity_override passed
the preflight and then failed on the raw blank quantity. Overrides now count as
the line's values during that validation.
