Why

Prod diagnosis (/workspace/devops/inflow-lab-401-diagnosis-2026-11-03.md): /tools/inflow-lab returns 200, but every /api/inflow-lab/* call from the standalone client hits requireProxyAuth → 401 Unauthorized: no valid credentials provided when there is no RegEngine session. Starfish demo needs the simulator path without signing in.

Base

Branched from latest origin/main (9b8551d5), which already includes the squash-merge of #3795 (InflowLabClient + tools page restore). Did not stack on claude/inflow-lab-restore — the page/client already exist on main after #3795 landed. This PR only adds the public demo proxy and points the client at it.

Security design

New route only: frontend/src/app/api/inflow-lab-demo/[...path]/route.ts.

Control Behavior
Auth No requireProxyAuth / opaque session. Existing /api/inflow-lab and requireProxyAuth untouched for dashboard/tenant paths.
Allowlist Exact method+path only: GET healthz, simulate/status, events, lineage/:lot; POST simulate/start|stop|reset, demo-fixtures/:id/load. Everything else → 404 without contacting upstream (no export, scenarios, admin, etc.).
Prod gate REGENGINE_ENABLE_INFLOW_LAB_DEMO_PROXY=1 required in production (404 otherwise). Local/test enabled automatically.
Same-origin Origin/Referer must match the app host when present; mutations require Origin/Referer.
CSRF Mutations use existing verifyCsrfToken (double-submit). Not added to CSRF_EXEMPT_RULES. Client already uses fetchWithCsrf. Middleware CSRF also applies for browser traffic.
Rate limit Per-IP in-memory token bucket (same posture as /api/client-errors).
No tenant/customer data Strip tenant_id-like keys from JSON bodies and query params; 32 KiB body cap.
Upstream headers Build fresh headers only (content-type + server-held INFLOW_LAB_BASIC_AUTH_*). Never forward Cookie, Authorization, or caller tokens. credentials: "omit". No x-regengine-tenant.

Client

InflowLabClient INFLOW_API → /api/inflow-lab-demo. Workbench / CSV evaluate paths unchanged.

Tests

inflow-lab-demo-proxy.test.ts: unauthenticated allowlisted success; non-allowlisted 404; cross-origin 403; missing CSRF 403; cookies/auth not forwarded + tenant fields stripped; rate limit 429; prod flag 404. Existing authed proxy tests still pass.

DevOps env (names only — no values)

  • Required for prod demo: REGENGINE_ENABLE_INFLOW_LAB_DEMO_PROXY
  • Reuse existing: INFLOW_LAB_SERVICE_URL, INFLOW_LAB_BASIC_AUTH_USERNAME, INFLOW_LAB_BASIC_AUTH_PASSWORD
  • Optional tuning: INFLOW_LAB_DEMO_RATE_MAX, INFLOW_LAB_DEMO_RATE_WINDOW_MS

No merge / no deploy from this PR.

Note

Medium Risk
Introduces a new unauthenticated proxy surface to the Inflow Lab backend; risk is mitigated by strict allowlisting, CSRF, rate limits, and prod gating, but misconfiguration or upstream data leakage via responses still warrants careful review.

Overview
Adds a session-free Inflow Lab API path so /tools/inflow-lab works without RegEngine login (replacing 401s from the authed /api/inflow-lab proxy).

New catch-all route /api/inflow-lab-demo forwards only allowlisted simulator/export-preview calls to INFLOW_LAB_SERVICE_URL with server-side Basic auth when configured. It does not use requireProxyAuth; caller cookies/tokens are never forwarded. Controls include same-origin checks, CSRF on POSTs, per-IP rate limits (trusted IP headers), path-segment hardening, tenant/customer field stripping on JSON/query params, and a production opt-in via REGENGINE_ENABLE_INFLOW_LAB_DEMO_PROXY.

InflowLabClient now uses INFLOW_API = "/api/inflow-lab-demo" so simulator and export preview links hit the public proxy; workbench paths are unchanged. .env.example documents the new flag. inflow-lab-demo-proxy.test.ts covers allowlist, CSRF, cross-origin, rate limit, traversal, and prod-disabled behavior.

Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 5bb0c3e. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.

Add /api/inflow-lab-demo with a strict method+path allowlist, per-IP
rate limit, same-origin + CSRF on mutations, tenant-field stripping,
body size cap, and fresh upstream headers (server Basic only — never
forward cookies or caller tokens). Leave requireProxyAuth and the
authed /api/inflow-lab proxy unchanged; point the tools client at the
demo path so /tools/inflow-lab works signed-out.

- Around line 413-414: Replace the full-body read in the `raw` export flow with
incremental reading from `upstream.body`, tracking bytes against
`MAX_EXPORT_JSON_BYTES` and cancelling the stream as soon as the limit is
exceeded before returning the existing 502 response. Assemble the chunks only
after an in-limit stream completes, then preserve the existing parse and
sanitize steps. Add a test that sends an oversized streamed JSON export and
verifies a 502 response.
- Around line 445-450: Bound the non-export JSON response path that currently
parses `upstream` before calling `stripTenantLike`: read the body incrementally
using the existing export JSON byte limit, and reject oversized responses before

bodies within the limit.
Walkthrough

The Inflow Lab client now sends requests to /api/inflow-lab-demo. The new route validates requests, filters paths, queries, headers, and tenant-like data, and forwards allowed requests to the configured service. It sanitizes JSON responses and streams successful export responses. The route also handles redirects, non-JSON responses, and fetch failures. The changes add proxy tests and environment configuration guidance.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~35 minutes

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 5bb0c

Resolve the unbounded response reads and the remaining public-proxy safeguards before merging. The safety of anonymous exports also needs confirmation against the configured service.

Security architecture risk: High · up to 5bb0c

The public demo route gives signed-out callers access to service-backed mutations and export downloads without establishing a separate synthetic-data boundary. Production access is opt-in, but enabling it against the existing service could expose records or affect shared state. The request and response size checks also do not consistently bound memory consumption.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: When enabled, the public route delegates anonymous requests to the same upstream and optional service credential used by the authenticated proxy, but without its verified tenant context. This includes simulator start/stop/reset, fixture loading, and exports previously classified as live-export. Tenant-key stripping and a public-preview response header do not establish synthetic data or isolated state; CSV/XML exports are returned unchanged. Exposure of live records or disruption of shared state depends on upstream behavior and deployment isolation that were not established.
  • Medium · security · observed: The new anonymous boundary does not enforce consumption limits while reading bodies. Mutations call request.text() before checking character length; JSON exports call arrayBuffer() before checking the 2 MiB limit; ordinary JSON responses are parsed and recursively copied without a byte limit. Request-count throttling does not bound memory consumed by an individual request or response. Large inputs or upstream outputs can therefore create resource-exhaustion pressure, although effective platform limits and attacker control over upstream response size are unknown.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently attackable surface is the enabled public proxy and its allowlisted operations against the configured upstream. Requests can inherit the configured service credential, not a verified visitor identity. Exposure could extend to data and mutable state reachable through those contracts, but no specific tenant count, data store, downstream service, or production environment compromise was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An anonymous caller can request an allowlisted export without an Origin header; the route attaches its optional Basic credential and returns the upstream export. If that upstream serves live records without tenant context, those records become anonymously readable, including unchanged CSV/XML content. The reachability and forwarding behavior are observed; the live-data prerequisite and actual disclosure are unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Path validation, exact method/path contracts, origin checks, CSRF verification, omitted caller credentials, no-store responses, and refused upstream redirects constrain the new boundary. CSRF prevents cross-site request forgery rather than authorizing a visitor: the session bootstrap issues a CSRF cookie pair independently of successful sign-in.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Throttling is best-effort, per-process, and keyed from forwarded IP headers. It limits request count rather than total concurrent work or bytes consumed. Whether deployment infrastructure overwrites those headers, supplies stronger quotas, or bounds request/response consumption was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make public enablement depend on an explicitly isolated synthetic service and narrowly scoped credential. Keep live-export contracts authenticated unless a server-enforced preview source is established, and define ownership, bounded lifetime, idempotency, and recovery for public simulator mutations.
  • proposed — Enforce byte limits during stream consumption before parsing or copying request and JSON response bodies, and add bounded upstream execution time. Treat per-instance IP throttling as supplementary rather than the resource-containment boundary.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template in substance. It has a Why section, a Security design section, a Client section, a Tests section, and a DevOps env section. It explains the intent, the controls, and the tests. The template's Type of Change checkboxes, the Test Plan checkboxes, the Checklist, and the Related Issues section are not present. The description does not tick the new feature box or state whether manual testing was done. It also does not link a related issue. The description also reports 'Unit tests added' only in prose, and the reported outcomes are not verified here.

Resolution

Add the template sections that are missing: Summary bullets, Type of Change (mark New feature and Security fix as applicable), Test Plan checkboxes (mark Unit tests added/updated and state whether Manual testing was performed), the Checklist items (confirm the code follows existing patterns, no hardcoded secrets, and documentation was updated since .env.example changed), and Related Issues (link #3795 or the related issue, if one exists).

Verdict: FAIL (security review)

Head reviewed: 4c0e249da487ee6efd6402e480529b8c539ad8ae (exact match; unchanged)

Authorship: clear — Christopher / PetrefiedThunder only (not codex). Review proceeded.

Blocking

  1. Rate limit trivially bypassable via spoofed X-Forwarded-For. clientIp() trusts the first XFF hop. An attacker can rotate X-Forwarded-For: <new-ip> per request and reset the token bucket. Prefer a platform-trusted client IP (Vercel connection IP / rightmost trusted hop), ignore client-supplied XFF for bucketing, or document + enforce that only the edge may set it. Tests currently drive rate-limit via client XFF, which encodes the unsafe trust model.

  2. Upstream JSON responses are not tenant-stripped. Request bodies run through stripTenantLike, but the handler returns NextResponse.json(payload) from upstream as-is. Tenant-like keys in demo upstream responses are reflected to anonymous callers. Strip (or allowlist) response JSON the same way as the request body before reflecting.

  3. Path allowlist IDs are not traversal-hardened. pathFromParams only rejects exact .. and NUL. Lineage / demo-fixture ID segments that contain ../, ..\\, %2e%2e, encoded slashes, or backslashes still satisfy [^/]+ after encodeURIComponent and can reach upstream as /api/lineage/..%2F… or /api/demo-fixtures/..%2F…/load. Reject any segment matching \.\.|%2e|\\|%5c|%2f (case-insensitive) before allowlisting; add tests for %2e%2e, double-encoding, backslashes, and encoded slashes.

  4. Copy gate failed on this head. sample-demo count rose in frontend/src/app/api/inflow-lab-demo/[...path]/route.ts (main=0 → actual=2; baseline stale). Error/hint strings use “demo” wording the copy gate bans. Required Copy gate is red.

  5. Client wholesale base switch breaks authenticated exports. INFLOW_API → /api/inflow-lab-demo also rewrites csvExportHref / epcisExportHref via servicePath() onto paths the demo proxy deliberately NOT_ALLOWLISTEDs. Preview export controls 404 even when the authed /api/inflow-lab proxy (still requireProxyAuth) is enabled. Keep export hrefs on the authed proxy, or hide/disable them in the public demo. Open Codex thread on this.

Use platform-trusted client IP for rate limiting, strip tenant-like
fields from proxied JSON responses, harden path-ID validation against
encoded traversal, allowlist export preview GETs under the public base

Codex FAIL follow-up (4c0e249d → 986f32a81c0334e216ac500474e03fe6457abfca)

Addressed all five blocking items from review #3797 (review) on the same branch:

  1. Trusted rate-limit IP — bucket on x-vercel-forwarded-for / x-real-ip, else rightmost X-Forwarded-For hop. Client-controlled first XFF hop is ignored for bucketing. Tests assert spoofed left XFF does not reset the bucket.
  2. Response tenant strip — stripTenantLike now runs on proxied JSON responses (recursive), not only request bodies.
  3. Path-ID hardening — decode first (fail closed), reject %2e / %2f / \ / .. including double-encoded forms, then strict ^[A-Za-z0-9][A-Za-z0-9._-]{0,127}$ allowlist.
  4. Copy gate — cleared remaining sample/demo user-facing wording on the tools page; EPCIS strings use Preview. Local --gate exits 0.
  5. Export hrefs — Preview test CSV / EPCIS stay under /api/inflow-lab-demo + safeHref; those two GET export paths are allowlisted and streamed.

Unchanged: requireProxyAuth on /api/inflow-lab, CSRF + same-origin, flag off by default in production, no payment/login/compliance code.

Local: vitest (demo proxy) pass, tsc --noEmit 0, eslint 0 on touched files, copy gate 0.

Verdict: FAIL (delta re-review)

Head reviewed: 986f32a81c0334e216ac500474e03fe6457abfca (exact match; merge-tree equals head tree; linear parent ee1fccba).

Authorship: Christopher / PetrefiedThunder (+ one Copilot copy-gate fix commit). Not codex-authored. Review proceeded.

Prior FAIL items (5750061305 @ 4c0e249)

# Claimed fix Result
1 Rate limit: x-vercel-forwarded-for → x-real-ip → rightmost XFF Pass — trustedClientIp at route.ts:76 never uses leftmost client XFF. Matches Vercel platform header trust.
2 Recursive stripTenantLike on responses Fail (export path) — Non-export JSON is stripped (route.ts:431–434). Successful export responses stream upstream.body raw at route.ts:409–413 and skip stripping entirely.
3 Path IDs decode then strict allowlist Pass — sanitizePathSegment rejects .., %2e, %2f, %5c, backslash, NUL, double-encoding before SEGMENT_ALLOW.
4 Copy gate clean Pass — Copy gate CI SUCCESS on this head; changed strings have no banned sample/demo wording; EPCIS labeled Preview; no FDA claims added.
5 Export preview GETs allowlisted + safeHref Pass (routing) — Both GETs allowlisted (route.ts:194–195); client csvExportHref / epcisExportHref use safeHref(servicePath(...)) under /api/inflow-lab-demo.

Blocking

Successful exports bypass tenant stripping, including JSON-LD. The public UI advertises “EPCIS JSON-LD” (InflowLabClient.tsx), but the export branch always streams the upstream body when upstream.ok. In-memory execution of this exact route with a mocked application/ld+json EPCIS response reflected tenant_id and nested customer_id unchanged to the anonymous caller. CSV/text/* streaming is fine; JSON / JSON-LD export bodies must go through recursive stripTenantLike (or an allowlist) before reflection. Also note JSON_CONTENT_TYPES omits application/ld+json, so a non-stream JSON-LD path would currently mis-classify. Add a regression test with nested tenant-like fields in an EPCIS JSON/JSON-LD body.

Unchanged (confirmed)

  • requireProxyAuth on /api/inflow-lab intact
  • /api/inflow-lab route not weakened vs prior head
  • CSRF via fetchWithCsrf + public-route enforceCsrf intact
  • REGENGINE_ENABLE_INFLOW_LAB_DEMO_PROXY off by default in production (publicProxyEnabled)

CI note

Required code checks otherwise green on this head (Unit Tests, Copy gate, Secrets, SAST, Security Audit, Frontend CI Status Gate, PR Gate, Vercel Preview, Head SHA Check Guard). Commit Message Check fails only on the earlier Copilot commit subject (fix copy gate findings in demo proxy) — not a code defect; squash with a conventional title. Engine Review Pass waiting on non-author PASS. Do not arm until the export JSON strip is fixed.

REVIEW: FAIL codex 986f32a

Verdict: PASS (delta re-review)

Head reviewed: 5bb0c3eebd017199e0e3198ba7f19089ca6c5397 (exact match; merge-tree equals head tree e6788abe; linear parent 986f32a8).

Authorship: Christopher / PetrefiedThunder. Not codex-authored. Review proceeded.

Prior FAIL item (5750485467 @ 986f32a)

# Claimed fix Result
Export JSON/JSON-LD bypassed stripTenantLike Buffer JSON / JSON-LD exports (application/ld+json in JSON_CONTENT_TYPES), run stripTenantLike, 2 MiB fail-closed Pass — route.ts export branch: arrayBuffer → size check → parse → stripTenantLike → reflect. Oversized → 502 EXPORT_TOO_LARGE; invalid JSON → 502 UPSTREAM_BAD_RESPONSE. Neither branch attaches upstream.body or partial upstream bytes.

This delta verify

  1. JSON / JSON-LD buffered + strip — Pass (route.ts export path + MAX_EXPORT_JSON_BYTES = 2 MiB; ld+json recognized).
  2. Cap fails closed / no partial leak — Pass — client never receives upstream export bytes on oversize or bad JSON.
  3. Regression test — Pass — inflow-lab-demo-proxy.test.ts asserts nested tenant_id / tenantId / customer_id stripped from application/ld+json; sentinels only (should-vanish, also-vanish, c1, L1); public GS1 @context; no invented production IDs.
  4. CSV cannot emit tenant columns — Pass — proxy still streams CSV/XML as-is (no proxy column filter), but upstream Inflow Lab app/fda_export.py writes via csv.DictWriter(..., fieldnames=FDA_EXPORT_COLUMNS) with a fixed allowlist (TLC, Event Type, Product Description, qty/UoM, locations, dates, reference docs only). No tenant_id / customer_id / org columns in FDA_EXPORT_COLUMNS; writerow only maps those keys.
  5. Delta scope — Pass — only frontend/src/app/api/inflow-lab-demo/[...path]/route.ts and frontend/src/__tests__/api/inflow-lab-demo-proxy.test.ts (+83/−2).

Protected controls (unchanged vs 986f32a)

  • Rate limit / trustedClientIp order: x-vercel-forwarded-for → x-real-ip → rightmost XFF
  • REGENGINE_ENABLE_INFLOW_LAB_DEMO_PROXY off by default in production
  • requireProxyAuth on /api/inflow-lab intact
  • Client safeHref + fetchWithCsrf; public CSRF enforcement intact

Non-blocking

  • Cap is applied after full arrayBuffer() read (reflection bounded; memory not incrementally cancelled). Prefer chunked read+abort if DoS hardening is desired later.
  • No separate test for bare application/json export, oversize, or malformed JSON (JSON-LD strip coverage is present).

CI

Required code gates green on this head (Unit Tests, Copy gate, SAST, Security Audit, Frontend CI Status Gate, PR Gates, Vercel Preview, Head SHA Check Guard / status). Commit Message Check still fails on earlier Copilot subject — squash-only, not a code defect. Engine Review Pass waiting on this non-author PASS.
