Acceptance tests for SEL-597 (duplicate events) and SEL-599 (VERIFIED only on a full chain), per the R&D spec regengine-sel597-sel599-acceptance.md. Test-only PR: no production, EPCIS or export code touched.

Data rule: data-free structural tests only. Inputs are built at runtime from TraceabilityEvent required fields, schema bounds and CTEType enum, with uuid4/now() opaque values. No fixture files, no hand-made records, no invented GTINs, lots, GLNs or numbers. Only the SQL/storage boundary is mocked; production code makes the dedup and verification decisions. No network, no partner raw path, no LLM path. Each file runs in about 1 second locally.

SEL-597 (test_sel597_dedup.py): 4 passing

  • 1 identical replay: reported as idempotent, no second insert
  • 4 second batch: duplicate reported, event count unchanged (upload duplicate counter left out; see below)
  • 5 raw lot preserved exactly, no normalization into a duplicate (GTIN-pairing part left out)
  • 6 tenant isolation: replay lookup is tenant-scoped

SEL-599 (test_sel599_verified.py): 4 passing, 2 strict xfail

  • ledger integrity walk: complete passes, removed middle row gives a sequence gap, dangling previous hash fails, no chain evidence fails closed
  • xfail(strict) "SEL-599 fix not merged": case 4 (single event is VERIFIED today) and case 7 (unchained events still VERIFIED). Both fail on current main as the spec expects. Remove the markers when the fix lands.

Cases left out (reasons are also in each module docstring)

  • 597-2: compute_idempotency_key excludes event_id, so identical content with different IDs is silently merged. There is no possible-duplicate flag to assert.
  • 597-3: there is no event-ID conflict check and no conflict-to-gap-report path.
  • 597-4 (counter only): IngestionRun has no duplicate-count field.
  • 597-5 (GTIN part): the idempotency key omits product_reference, and no GTIN-paired lenient-lot policy exists.
  • 597-7: this would need a fabricated file, and the compliance_score endpoint needs configured services.
  • 599-1/2: there is no per-lot harvest-to-receive completeness status and no CTE missing-link gap report. The verifier is a tenant-wide hash ledger.
  • 599-3: the model has supersedes_event_id, not previous_event_id. The ledger-link variant is covered.
  • 599-5: verification is tenant-wide, not per lot.
  • 599-6: there is no isolated EPCIS round-trip harness, and export code is deliberately untouched.

Review by DeepSeek. Do not merge without a PASS from another engine plus green CI.

Note

Low Risk
Test-only additions with mocked storage; no runtime ingestion, verification, or export behavior is modified.

Overview
Adds two new ingestion test modules that lock in R&D acceptance behavior for canonical persistence deduplication (SEL-597) and hash-ledger verification (SEL-599), with no production or export changes.

SEL-597 (test_sel597_dedup.py) exercises real CanonicalEventStore replay logic while mocking only SQL/storage: identical single-event and batch replays return idempotent results without extra inserts; traceability lot whitespace is not collapsed into the same idempotency key; and tenant-scoped idempotency lookup prevents cross-tenant dedup. Module docstrings document spec cases intentionally not covered (e.g. possible-duplicate flags, upload counters, GTIN pairing, compliance score).

SEL-599 (test_sel599_verified.py) drives verify_chain_canonical with mocked ledger rows built from CTEType and production hash helpers: a complete chain passes; a missing middle row, broken previous-chain link, and no chain evidence fail as expected. Two tests are xfail(strict) until a fix lands: a singleton ledger must not count as verified, and canonical events without matching chain rows must block full verification.

Walkthrough

Adds tests for canonical-event replay and tenant-scoped persistence, using synthesized events and mocked storage. It also adds tests for canonical ledger verification across complete, incomplete, broken-link, and empty-ledger cases. Two strict expected-failure tests cover singleton and partial ledgers.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 79a99

The added acceptance tests leave a few bounded coverage gaps, so replay regressions could be missed even though this PR does not change production behavior.

P2 Badge Use distinct event IDs for non-duplicate test records

The whitespace variant retains the original event_id, so these two records cannot both be persisted: fsma.traceability_events declares event_id as its primary key in alembic/sql/V043__canonical_traceability_events.sql, and the writer's ON CONFLICT (tenant_id, idempotency_key) does not handle that primary-key collision. The tenant-isolation test repeats the same problem when copying the event into another tenant. Both tests pass only because the mocked insert indexes rows by tenant and idempotency key and ignores event-ID uniqueness, making their successful-persistence assertions impossible against the real schema. Assign a fresh event_id to each distinct record; event IDs are excluded from the idempotency key, so this preserves the intended deduplication checks.

Fixed in 79a9940: distinct records now get a fresh event_id (sha256 recomputed by production), and the mock insert enforces event_id primary-key uniqueness across tenants.

Xfail hides failing acceptance tests

Medium Severity

The new SEL-599 cases wrap failing checks in pytest.mark.xfail(strict=True), so CI stays green while a singleton ledger and a partial chain still return valid. That conceals the acceptance gap these tests exist to lock in.

Capture the TLC at the mocked insert boundary.

The fixture stores only event IDs and hashes. The raw-lot test checks distinct keys and row counts, but it does not detect TLC trimming before insertion.

This is a test-coverage improvement, not evidence of a production data-integrity defect.

Suggested test fix
     rows = {}
+ inserted_lots = []

     def insert(event):
+ inserted_lots.append(event.traceability_lot_code)

+ return writer, rows, inserted_lots
...
- writer, rows = store
+ writer, rows, _ = store

Add cardinality assertions to prevent vacuous acceptance.

Assert that batch replay adds no hash-chain entries.

test_second_batch_reports_duplicate_and_preserves_event_count checks result flags, event IDs, and rows == before. It does not check the batch chain insert. The fixture replaces _batch_insert_chain_entries with a MagicMock, and the batch insert stub writes only to rows. A replay that calls _batch_insert_chain_entries would therefore leave every current assertion unchanged. The single-event test already checks _insert_chain_entry.call_count, but the batch test has no equivalent check.

Record the _batch_insert_chain_entries.call_count after the first batch. Assert that it does not change after the replay. If the replay path calls the batch insert with an empty entry list, assert on the entries argument instead.

Construct the fixture quantity as a float.

_ledger uses the integer schema bound directly, so zero is serialized as "0" in both the digest and mocked row. The canonical model and insertion path use a float, while verification hashes the projected quantity with str(quantity). Use 0.0 to exercise the production representation.

Make the tenant assertion test SQL scoping.

_verify returns the same rows for every statement through an unrestricted MagicMock. Equal tid bindings do not detect removal of the tenant predicates from either query. Assert both SQL predicates or make the mock reject unscoped statements and return distinct cross-tenant rows.

This is a test-coverage gap, not a current production tenant-isolation vulnerability. The production queries remain tenant-scoped.

Update the tenant-scoping assertion in `_verify` to check that both executed SQL
statements include their tenant predicates, or configure the mock to reject
unscoped statements and return distinct cross-tenant rows. Do not rely only on
equal `tid` bindings, since they do not verify SQL scoping.

Test singleton chain integrity as a passing case.

A single correctly linked chain row has valid integrity under verify_chain_canonical. The assertion that it must be invalid tests a separate, unimplemented supply-chain completeness rule. Remove the xfail and assert the verifier's integrity result. Keep a future per-lot completeness test separate. (raw.githubusercontent.com) As per path instructions, “Flag tests that were weakened, skipped, or loosened (broader asserts, removed tenant checks, xfail) to make a change pass.”

Do not classify every unchained event as an integrity failure.

The verifier deliberately permits some skip_chain_write events without chain rows. With one valid chain row, this test's unconditional assert not result.valid conflicts with that contract. Test the reported events_without_chain_row count here. If SEL-599 requires a different verdict for events that must be chained, add a fixture that distinguishes those events before asserting that verdict. (raw.githubusercontent.com) As per path instructions, “Flag tests that were weakened, skipped, or loosened (broader asserts, removed tenant checks, xfail) to make a change pass.”

REVIEW: PASS deepseek 79a9940

Second-engine review of Codex SEL-597/599 acceptance tests. Worktree /private/tmp/dsrev-3734 @ this SHA. Diff vs PR base b99fff34: only services/ingestion/tests/test_sel597_dedup.py (+145) and services/ingestion/tests/test_sel599_verified.py (+150). Local pytest those two files → 8 passed, 2 xfailed in 0.67s. dsh headless VERDICT: PASS.

Checklist

  1. Test-only — two new test files; no product/production, EPCIS, or export code.
  2. No invented IDs — GTINs/GLNs/lots/tenants/units from uuid4() / schema bounds / CTEType enum; no hardcoded business literals, fixtures, CSV, or JSON ingest.
  3. xfails justified — both use pytest.mark.xfail(strict=True, reason="SEL-599 fix not merged") and assert post-fix behavior (not result.valid). Probed live on this checkout: singleton and partial-chain currently return valid=True, so the markers encode the real SEL-599 contract.
  4. Left-out cases — each module docstring lists omitted acceptance cases with concrete reasons (no possible-duplicate flag, no IngestionRun duplicate counter, no per-lot completeness status, etc.).
  5. SEL-549/590 synthetic-only — this PR does not touch those paths; no production JSON/CSV ingest and no real customer data.
  6. Meaningful — real CanonicalEventStore.persist_event / persist_events_batch and verify_chain_canonical decisions; only the session/storage boundary and side effects are mocked. Replay, tenant scoping, lot-whitespace key preservation, sequence gap, chain break, and fail-closed empty chain are all exercised.

No concrete blockers.

Merged main into this branch. There were no conflicts.

Local checks (Python 3.11): test_sel597_dedup.py and test_sel599_verified.py both pass.

The Security Audit ingestion failure doesn't come from this PR. pip-audit is flagging new CVEs in pinned pypdf 6.21.2 and pyasn1 0.6.4, which #3773 fixes. Engine Review Pass was fixed on main in #3756.

New head SHA: 591a8995bd6dab484602f8072270b1624349e2d9 (ready for a non-Claude reviewer).
