L80: # Transitions
L81:
L82: Control timing with duration, easing, springs, delay, and stagger.
L83:
L84: Copy page Copy page
L85:
L86: A `transition` defines the type of animation used when animating between two values.
L87:
L88:     `const transition = {
L89:       duration: 0.8,
L90:       delay: 0.5,
L91:       ease: [0, 0.71, 0.2, 1.01],
L92:     }`
L93:
L94: Copy code Copy code
L95:
L96:     `// Motion component
L97:     <motion.div
L98:       animate={{ x: 100 }}
L99:       transition={transition}
L100:     />
L101:
L102:     // animate() function
L103:     animate(".box", { x: 100 }, transition)`
L104: Copy code Copy code
L105:
L106: 【61†Video guide†www.youtube.com】Video guide【61†Open video†www.youtube.com】 【62†Transition options†examples.motion.dev】Transition options【63†Open example†examples.motion.dev】
L107: ## 【64†Setting a transition】
L108:
L109: `transition` can be set on any animation prop, and that transition will be used when the animation fires.
L110:
L111:     `<motion.div
L112:       whileHover={{
L113:         scale: 1.1,
L114:         transition: { duration: 0.2 }
L115:       }}
L116:     />`
L117:
L118: Copy code Copy code
L119: ### 【65†Value-specific transitions】
L120: When animating multiple values, each value can be animated with a different transition, with `default` handling all other values:
L121:
L122:     `// Motion component
L123:     <motion.li
L124:       animate={{
L125:         x: 0,
L126:         opacity: 1,
L127:         transition: {
L128:           default: { type: "spring" },
L129:           opacity: { ease: "linear" }
L130:         }
L131:       }}
L132:     />
L133:
L134:     // animate() function
L135:     animate("li", { x: 0, opacity: 1 }, {
L136:       default: { type: "spring" },
L137:       opacity: { ease: "linear" }
L138:     })`
L139: Copy code Copy code
L140: ### 【66†Default transitions】
L141:
L142: It's possible to set default transitions via the `transition` prop. Either for specific `motion` components:
L143:
L144:     `<motion.div
L145:       animate={{ x: 100 }}
L146:       transition={{ type: "spring", stiffness: 100 }}
L147:     />`
L148:
L149: Copy code Copy code
L150:
L151: Or for a group of `motion` components 【67†via】 `MotionConfig`:
L152:
L153:     `<MotionConfig transition={{ duration: 0.4, ease: "easeInOut" }}>
L154:       <App />
L155:     </MotionConfig>`
L156:
L157: Copy code Copy code
L158: ### 【68†Inheritance】
L159:
L160: By default, transitions of higher specificity will replace default transitions. For example:
L161:
L162:     `<MotionConfig transition={{ duration: 1, ease: "linear" }}>
L163:       <motion.div
L164:         animate={{ x: 100 }}
L165:         transition={{ ease: "easeInOut" }}
L166:       />
L167:     </MotionConfig>`
L168:
L169: Copy code Copy code
L170:
L171: In this above example, `x` will animate with the default `duration` of `0.3`.
L172: By setting `inherit: true`, a transition will inherit values from transitions with lower specificity.
L173:
L174:     `<MotionConfig transition={{ duration: 1, ease: "linear" }}>
L175:       <motion.div
L176:         animate={{ x: 100 }}
L177:         transition={{
L178: inherit: true, // duration 1 now inherited
L179:           ease: "easeInOut"
L180:         }}
L181:       />
L182:     </MotionConfig>`
L183:
L184: Copy code Copy code
L185: This is also true of value-specific transitions:
L186:
L187:     `<motion.div
L188:       animate={{ x: 100, opacity: 1 }}
L189:       transition={{
L190:         duration: 1,
L191:         ease: "easeInOut",
L192:         opacity: {
L193:           inherit: true, // inherit 1 second
L194:           ease: "linear"
L195:         }
L196:       }}
L197:     />`
L198:
L199: Copy code Copy code
L200: ## 【69†Transition settings】
L201: #### 【70†`type`】
L202:
L203: Default: Dynamic
L204:
L205: `type` decides the type of animation to use. It can be `"tween"`, `"spring"` or `"inertia"`.
L206:
L207: 【71†Tween】 animations are set with a duration and an easing curve.
L208:
L209: Spring animations are either physics-based or duration-based.
L210:
L211: Physics-based spring animations are set via `stiffness`, `damping` and `mass`, and these incorporate the velocity of any existing gestures or animations for natural feedback.
L212: 【72†iOS App Store†examples.motion.dev】iOS App Store【73†Open example†examples.motion.dev】
L213:
L214: Duration-based spring animations are set via a `duration` and `bounce`. These don't incorporate velocity but are easier to understand, and can also be 【74†generated as pure CSS】 for when you'd rather not ship Motion to the browser.
L215: Inertia animations decelerate a value based on its initial velocity, usually used to implement inertial scrolling.
L216:
L217:     `<motion.path
L218:       animate={{ pathLength: 1 }}
L219:       transition={{ duration: 2, type: "tween" }}
L220:     />`
L221:
L222: Copy code Copy code
L223: #### 【75†Spring visualiser】
L224:
L225: ### 【76†Tween】
L226:
L227: #### 【77†`duration`】
L228:
L229: Default: `0.3` (or `0.8` if multiple keyframes are defined)
L230:
L231: The duration of the animation. Can also be used for `"spring"` animations when `bounce` is also set.
L232:
L233:     `animate("ul > li", { opacity: 1 }, { duration: 1 })`
L234:
L235: Copy code Copy code
L236: #### 【78†`ease`】
L237:
L238: The easing function to use with tween animations. Accepts:
L239:
L240:   * Easing function name. E.g `"linear"`
L241:
L242: * An array of four numbers to define a cubic bezier curve. E.g `[.17,.67,.83,.67]`
L243:
L244:   * A 【79†JavaScript easing function】, that accepts and returns a value `0`-`1`.
L245:
L246: These are the available easing function names:
L247:
L248:   * `"linear"`
L249:
L250:   * `"easeIn"`, `"easeOut"`, `"easeInOut"`
L251:
L252:   * `"circIn"`, `"circOut"`, `"circInOut"`
L253:
L254:   * `"backIn"`, `"backOut"`, `"backInOut"`
L255:
L256:   * `"anticipate"`
L257: When animating keyframes, `ease` can optionally be set as an array of easing functions to set different easings between each value:
L258:
L259:     `<motion.div
L260:       animate={{
L261:         x: [0, 100, 0],
L262:         transition: { ease: ["easeIn", "easeOut"] }
L263:       }}
L264:     />`
L265:
L266: Copy code Copy code
L267:
L268: For immediate visual feedback, you can edit CSS or Motion easing curves directly in your code editor with the 【80†Motion AI Kit Extension】.
L269: #### 【81†`times`】
L270:
L271: When animating multiple keyframes, `times` can be used to adjust the position of each keyframe throughout the animation.
L272:
L273: Each value in `times` is a value between `0` and `1`, representing the start and end of the animation.
L274:
L275:     `<motion.div
L276:       animate={{
L277:         x: [0, 100, 0],
L278:         transition: { times: [0, 0.3, 1] }
L279:       }}
L280:     />`
L281:
L282: Copy code Copy code
L283:
L284: There must be the same number of `times` as there are keyframes. Defaults to an array of evenly-spread durations.
L285: ### 【82†Spring】
L286: #### 【83†`bounce`】
L287:
L288: Default: `0.25`
L289:
L290: `bounce` determines the "bounciness" of a spring animation. It accepts values from `-1` to `1`.
L291:
L292: `0` is no bounce (critically damped), and `1` is extremely bouncy.
L293: Negative values, down to `-1`, make the spring overdamped: it starts quicker, then settles more slowly into its target, with no overshoot. The lower the value, the slower the settle. It still arrives at the same time as a `bounce` of `0`, so a negative `bounce` changes the shape of the motion, not its timing.
L294:
L295:     `<motion.div
L296:       animate={{ rotateX: 90 }}
L297:       transition={{ type: "spring", bounce: 0.25 }}
L298:     />`
L299:
L300: Copy code Copy code
L301:
L302: NOTE
L303: `bounce` and `duration` will be overridden if `stiffness`, `damping` or `mass` are set.
L304: #### 【84†`visualDuration`】
L305:
L306: If `visualDuration` is set, this will override `duration`.
L307:
L308: The visual duration is a time, set in seconds, that the animation will take to visually appear to reach its target.
L309:
L310: In other words, the bulk of the transition will occur before this time, and the "bouncy bit" will mostly happen after.
L311: This makes it easier to edit a spring, as well as visually coordinate it with other time-based animations.
L312:
L313:     `<motion.div
L314:       animate={{ rotateX: 90 }}
L315:       transition={{
L316:         type: "spring",
L317:         visualDuration: 0.5,
L318:         bounce: 0.25
L319:       }}
L320:     />`
L321:
L322: Copy code Copy code
L323: #### 【85†`damping`】
L324:
L325: Default: `10`
L326:
L327: Strength of opposing force. If set to 0, spring will oscillate indefinitely.
L328:

L397: ### 【91†Inertia】
L398:
L399: An animation that decelerates a value based on its initial velocity. Optionally, `min` and `max` boundaries can be defined, and inertia will snap to these with a spring animation.
L400:
L401: This animation will automatically precalculate a target value, which can be modified with the `modifyTarget` property.
L402:
L403: This allows you to add snap-to-grid or similar functionality.
L404:
L405: Inertia is also the animation used for `dragTransition`, and can be configured via that prop.
L406: #### 【92†`power`】
L407:
L408: Default: `0.8`
L409:
L410: A higher power value equals a further calculated target.
L411:
L412:     `<motion.div
L413:       drag

L418:
L419: #### 【93†`timeConstant`】
L420:
L421: Default: `700`
L422:
L423: Adjusting the time constant will change the duration of the deceleration, thereby affecting its feel.
L424:
L425:     `<motion.div
L426:       drag
L427:       dragTransition={{ timeConstant: 200 }}

L431: #### 【94†`modifyTarget`】
L432:
L433: A function that receives the automatically-calculated target and returns a new one. Useful for snapping the target to a grid.
L434:
L435:     `<motion.div
L436:       drag
L437: // dragTransition always type: inertia

L444:
L445: Copy code Copy code
L446: #### 【95†`min`】
L447:
L448: Minimum constraint. If set, the value will "bump" against this value (or immediately spring to it if the animation starts as less than this value).
L449:
L450:     `<motion.div
L451:       drag

L456: #### 【96†`max`】
L457:
L458: Maximum constraint. If set, the value will "bump" against this value (or immediately snap to it, if the initial animation value exceeds this value).
L459:
L460:     `<motion.div
L461:       drag

L466: #### 【97†`bounceStiffness`】
L467:
L468: Default: `500`
L469:
L470: If `min` or `max` is set, this affects the stiffness of the bounce spring. Higher values will create more sudden movement.
L471:
L472:     `<motion.div
L473:       drag
L474:       dragTransition={{
L475:         min: 0,

L480:
L481: Copy code Copy code
L482: #### 【98†`bounceDamping`】
L483:
L484: Default: `10`
L485:
L486: If `min` or `max` is set, this affects the damping of the bounce spring. If set to `0`, spring will oscillate indefinitely.
L487:
L488:     `<motion.div
L489:       drag
L490:       dragTransition={{

L499: ### 【99†Orchestration】
L500: #### 【100†`delay`】
L501:
L502: Default: `0`
L503:
L504: Delay the animation by this duration (in seconds).
L505:
L506:     `animate(element, { filter: "blur(10px)" }, { delay: 0.3 })`
L507:
L508: Copy code Copy code
L509:
L510: By setting `delay` to a negative value, the animation will start that long into the animation. For instance to start 1 second in, `delay` can be set to -`1`.
L511: #### 【101†`repeat`】
L512:
L513: Default: `0`
L514:
L515: The number of times to repeat the transition. Set to `Infinity` for perpetual animation.
L516:
L517:     `<motion.div
L518:       animate={{ rotate: 180 }}
L519:       transition={{ repeat: Infinity, duration: 2 }}

L521:
L522: Copy code Copy code
L523: #### 【102†`repeatType`】
L524:
L525: Default: `"loop"`
L526:
L527: How to repeat the animation. This can be either:
L528:
L529: * `loop`: Repeats the animation from the start.
L530:
L531: * `reverse`: Alternates between forward and backwards playback.
L532:
L533: * `mirror`: Switches animation origin and target on each iteration.
L534:
L535:     `<motion.div
L536:       animate={{ rotate: 180 }}
L537:       transition={{
L538:         repeat: 1,
L539:         repeatType: "reverse",

L541:       }}
L542:     />`
L543:
L544: Copy code Copy code
L545: #### 【103†`repeatDelay`】
L546:
L547: Default: `0`
L548:
L549: When repeating an animation, `repeatDelay` will set the duration of the time to wait, in seconds, between each repetition.
L550:
L551:     `<motion.div
L552:       animate={{ rotate: 180 }}
L553:       transition={{ repeat: Infinity, repeatDelay: 1 }}
L554:     />`
L555:
L556: Copy code Copy code
L557: #### 【104†`when`】
L558:
L559: Default: `false`
L560:
L561: With variants, describes when an animation should trigger, relative to that of its children.
L562:
L563: * `"beforeChildren"`: Children animations will play after the parent animation finishes.
L564: * `"afterChildren"`: Parent animations will play after the children animations finish.
L565:
L566:     `const list = {
L567:       hidden: {
L568:         opacity: 0,

L585:     )`
L586: Copy code Copy code
L587: #### 【105†`delayChildren`】
L588:
L589: Default: `0`
L590: With variants, setting `delayChildren` on a parent will delay child animations by this duration (in seconds).
L591:
L592:     `const container = {
L593:       hidden: { opacity: 0 },
L594:       show: {
L595:         opacity: 1,

L623:     }`
L624:
L625: Copy code Copy code
L626:
L627: By default, delay will stagger across children from first to last. By using `stagger`'s `from` option, we can stagger from the last child, the center, the edges, a specific index, or in a random order.
L628:
L629:     `const transition = {

Clear loading after the results placeholder mounts.

AnimatePresence uses mode="wait", so the results-loading child waits for the exemptions child to finish exiting. The effect clears isResultsLoading on the next animation frame, which can remove the placeholder before it mounts. No local or repository-owned MotionConfig overrides the default, and the opacity exit uses Motion's default 0.3-second tween.

Move the loading-state reset into a component that mounts inside the placeholder, or trigger it after that placeholder mounts. Keep coverage with the real AnimatePresence implementation.

Update the isResultsLoading reset in FTLCheckerClient so it occurs only after
the results-loading placeholder mounts, rather than on the next animation frame;
preserve the AnimatePresence transition behavior and add coverage using the real
AnimatePresence implementation.

Guard the exemption answer handler during the exit animation.

The exemptions view stays mounted during its exit animation, and its buttons keep the props from the last render before isResultsLoading became true. Their disabled value is therefore still false. handleExemptionAnswer has no loading check and calls setExemptionAnswers directly. A click on Yes or No during the fade can change the exemption status after the user has already chosen Skip or See Results. The results view mounts only after the exit completes, so the late answer can appear in the final status.

The exit has a default nonzero duration, so the window lasts roughly a few hundred milliseconds. Gate the handler with a value that the stale closure cannot hold, such as a ref set in handleSkipExemptions and handleFinishExemptions and cleared in handleStartOver. A check on isResultsLoading inside the handler will not work, because the handler captured the old value.

Update handleExemptionAnswer to reject answers while the exemptions view is
exiting, using a ref or other current value that cannot be stale in the handler
closure. Set the guard in handleSkipExemptions and handleFinishExemptions, and
clear it in handleStartOver so answers are accepted again for a new attempt.

Results skeleton skipped during transition

Medium Severity

AnimatePresence mode="wait" keeps the exemptions panel mounted until its exit finishes, while requestAnimationFrame clears isResultsLoading after one frame. The results skeleton never mounts, and Yes/No/Skip/Finish keep their pre-click enabled props on the still-visible panel, so answers can change after Skip or See Results.
