Follow-up to #3563 for SEL-453, fixing the five non-blocking findings in Hermes's review:

  1. The h1 check now has a bounded timeout ({ timeout: 5_000 }).
  2. A failed page load records no links, so links from the previous page are no longer credited to the failed path.
  3. Child sitemaps from a sitemap index are rewritten to the VISUAL_BASE_URL / preview origin.
  4. The fallback origin can no longer be the string "null": it falls back to VISUAL_BASE_URL, or fails with a clear error.
  5. The crawl-desktop and crawl-mobile projects are opt-in behind VISUAL_CRAWL=1, the same way the other conditional projects work. The README documents the flag.

VISUAL_AUTH is unchanged. No package.json or lockfile edits.

Base: cut from muse/sel-453-crawler-v2 because #3563 hadn't merged yet. I'll merge main in after #3563 lands (no rebase).

Local checks:

  • tsc --noEmit is clean.
  • Without VISUAL_CRAWL, --list shows 368 tests and none of them are crawl tests.
  • Crawl of https://regengine.co with VISUAL_CRAWL=1, both widths, about 2.1 min, same results at each width:

Note

Low Risk
Changes only affect optional manual visual/crawl tests and reporting; default CI runs omit crawl projects and production app code is untouched.

Overview
Makes the visual sitemap crawl projects (crawl-desktop / crawl-mobile) opt-in via VISUAL_CRAWL=1, matching preview-forms and signed-in, and updates the visual test README with the flag and run examples.

Crawler hardening in crawl.spec.ts: resolves base origin from baseURL / VISUAL_BASE_URL with a clear error instead of a bogus "null" origin; rewrites child sitemap URLs to the crawl base (preview-friendly); decodes XML entities in <loc> and fails fast on bad child sitemaps or empty URL lists. On each page visit, failed navigations no longer harvest links or dead-end signals from stale DOM; h1 checks use a 5s timeout; scoped link counts ignore self-referential links.

Walkthrough

The Playwright configuration includes the desktop and mobile crawler projects only when VISUAL_CRAWL=1. The README documents this flag and updates the sitemap-crawl command. The crawler resolves a usable base origin, decodes sitemap locations, rewrites child sitemap URLs, and throws when child sitemap requests fail or no usable page URLs exist. After navigation failure, it skips DOM reads, link collection, and dead-end classification. The h1 lookup uses a five-second timeout.

Priority: Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 3d026

A sitemap containing only excluded routes can make the visual crawl pass without checking pages, so post-filter coverage should be validated before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3d026

The change is confined to visual crawling and reduces default exposure by requiring explicit opt-in. Child-sitemap requests now target the configured origin, and navigation failures no longer reuse stale page content. No introduced or materially worsened security concern was established, but existing off-origin navigation paths and credential-forwarding behavior remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant security scope is the opted-in crawl process, its configured deployment target, and destinations reachable through navigation or redirects. Any credential consequence depends on whether the optional bypass header is supplied and forwarded; repository inspection did not establish that forwarding behavior.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Discarding a sitemap URL's host does not guarantee origin confinement: an absolute URL with pathname //outside.example/ produces a protocol-relative page.goto target. The same literal input path was accepted in the base. XML decoding adds encoded representations, but an attacker controlling the same sitemap already had the literal capability; no materially expanded authority or exposure was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — For successfully parsed child-sitemap URLs, the new helper replaces protocol and host with the configured origin before requesting them, reducing direct sitemap-selected destination reachability. This is not a complete egress boundary: parse failures return the original value, and requests still permit up to five redirects.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — As separate hardening of the pre-existing navigation boundary, construct an absolute crawl target and verify its origin immediately before navigation. Also establish redirect and header-forwarding policy before using a bypass secret with untrusted crawl content.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: the sitemap crawler is hardened and the crawl projects are made opt-in behind VISUAL_CRAWL=1. The title is specific and matches the changeset objectives. It also includes a ticket reference, which is harmless.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has a Summary with five numbered points that match the changes. It explains the opt-in flag and that the README documents it. It reports local test results, including tsc, the test list count, and crawl results. It links the related issue (SEL-453) and the prior PR (#3563). The Type of Change and Test Plan checkboxes are not ticked, and the Checklist is not marked. The Related Issues section is present but uses a Linear link, not the template's issue format.

REVIEW: PASS hermes af33fc1
Full SHA: af33fc1 (PR head; judged this single commit on top of #3563's 2957c30). Engine: Hermes CLI (headless) + manual diff read.

  1. h1 timeout — FIXED. crawl.spec.ts:287-293: .textContent({ timeout: 5_000 }).catch(() => ''), so a page with no h1 costs at most 5s.
  2. Failed goto — FIXED. :237 navigationFailed, set in catch at :248 alongside pageErrors.push('navigation failed: …') (still reported). Link collection is inside if (!navigationFailed) at :259-275, so no stale links are credited to the failed path.
  3. Child sitemaps — FIXED. rewriteToBaseOrigin (:73-83) forces protocol+host (port kept) to the base origin; used at :112 for sitemap-index children.
  4. No 'null' origin — FIXED. baseOriginOf (:43-70): baseURL → VISUAL_BASE_URL → page.url(); an invalid URL throws, and an opaque 'null' origin falls back to VISUAL_BASE_URL/https://regengine.co or throws a clear error. It never returns 'null'.
  5. Opt-in crawl — FIXED. playwright.visual.config.ts:27 allowCrawl = VISUAL_CRAWL === '1'; crawl-desktop/mobile are spread in only when it's set (:97-116). README documents it, and no workflow sets it.

Re-confirmed: GET only (page.goto + page.request.get; no click/fill/post). No made-up data (live sitemap). VISUAL_AUTH is untouched and stays opt-in. No package.json or lockfile changes.

Non-blocking:

  • After a failed goto, status stays 0, so the dead-end block (:278-298) still reads page.url() and the h1 from the previous page's DOM. The finding's finalUrl is the stale URL, and it could be mislabeled "ends on 404 page" if the previous page was a 404. Suggest gating the dead-end block on !navigationFailed (e.g. reason "navigation failed") and reporting finalUrl as ''.
  • The config header comment now has two overlapping sentences about conditional projects; tidy it up.

- Around line 116-117: Update the child sitemap response handling in the crawl
flow so a non-2xx response reports the failed child URL and fails the crawl
instead of continuing and omitting its pages. Preserve parsing for successful
responses.
- Around line 88-90: Update parseLocs to decode XML entities in each extracted
loc value before returning it, so URLs with escaped query separators retain
their original query string when used to construct URLs.
- Around line 268-270: Update the scopedSameOrigin counting loop to exclude
links whose normalized URL is the current page URL; only increment the count for
valid same-origin links that lead to another page.
- Around line 108-109: Validate the `parseLocs` result before continuing the
crawl: require at least one URL and require every URL to pass `isSitemapUrl`.
Reject the sitemap when either condition fails so the tests cannot pass without
crawling pages.

Hermes delta review of d830db2 (previous head af33fc1). Delta: merge of main (which now includes #3563) plus two Muse commits.

VERDICT: PASS

  1. crawl.spec.ts:278-282: dead-end classification is skipped when navigationFailed; successful navigations behave exactly as before. The failure is still recorded in pageErrors.
  2. playwright.visual.config.ts:4-15: header comment deduped to one accurate description of the three conditional projects.
  3. playwright.visual.config.ts:96-115: crawl-desktop / crawl-mobile exist only under VISUAL_CRAWL=1. The unconditional copies that the main merge brought back were removed in d830db2. playwright test --list shows no crawl projects without the flag, and 2 tests each with it.
  4. tests/visual/README.md: main's /sandbox (Remove /sandbox route; drill simulator CSV template (headers only) #3557) note kept; opt-in docs intact.
  5. Still read-only (GET only), no sample or made-up data added, secrets referenced by env-var name only.
  6. eslint and tsc --noEmit are clean on both files.

REVIEW: PASS hermes 3d0262a

Delta d830db2...3d0262a (crawl.spec.ts only), verified head = 3d0262a.

  • Empty sitemap / no usable URLs now throws (paths.size === 0). OK.
  • Child sitemap non-OK throws with URL + status (intended, per the bot threads). OK.
  • entity decoding with & last. OK.
  • Same-page links in main/nav/footer excluded from scoped outbound count; both sides go through normalizeLink, so the comparison is consistent. OK.
  • Real data only: no fixtures or sample sitemap bodies added; everything comes from the live site.
Non-blocking: numeric refs are decoded before named ones, so a numeric-encoded ampersand such as < would be decoded twice into <. Unlikely in real sitemaps; a single-pass regex would remove it.
