REVIEW: PASS muse d1a5b36
Head checked: d1a5b36. Ran locally in a throwaway worktree: pytest tests/test_gs1_128_labels.py gave 44 passed.
GS1-128 encoding (services/ingestion/app/labels/gs1_128.py)
- :384 Start C followed by FNC1 is correct. :361/:397/:414 put FNC1 only between variable fields and none after the last one. Fixed AIs come first (:340), so 00/01/02/11/13/15/17/410/414 never need a separator.
- :353 adds the AI parentheses only to the human-readable lines. The element string and the codewords hold the AI digits with no parentheses.
- Formats (:180-191, :278-316): AI 01/02 is 14 digits, 00 is 18 and 410/414 are 13, all checked by the SEL-429 validator. AI 11/13/15/17 take YYMMDD with real calendar checks, and DD=00 is allowed. AI 10/21 take 1-20 characters from charset 82 (:148, exactly 82 characters, no space). AI 37 takes 1-8 digits. The mod-103 check and the stop symbol plus final bar (:419-436) are correct.
- Minor/non-blocking: there's no Code A support (shift/latch). That's fine because charset 82 has no control characters.
ZPL (:438-475, :574-595)
^BCN,...,N,N,N,N^FD>;>8...: >; starts subset C and >8 is FNC1. Between variable fields it uses >8, and >6/>5 for subset switches. The C-mode pair "99" vs the latch (:446) is handled and tested (test_code_c_pair_matching_the_latch_value_stays_digits). A literal '>' becomes >0 in subset B.- Injection: every free-text value has to be in charset 82, which has no ^ and no ~ (:316). ^FH is never used, so the '_' character is harmless. The human-readable ^FD lines (:592) only carry validated values. Error messages don't echo input values.
PDF (:484-553): a valid PDF 1.4 with a correct xref table and byte offsets. The text is hex-encoded ASCII (<..> Tj), so parentheses and backslashes in a lot can't break the content stream. Bars are drawn from the same codewords as the ZPL.
Lead's checks
- (a) No invented identifiers in the tests. tests/test_gs1_128_labels.py:649-772 builds every GTIN/SSCC/GLN/lot/date at runtime from a seeded RNG, and check digits come from compute_gs1_check_digit. No literal GTINs, lots, companies or dates are committed as samples or fixtures. The frontend test uses only empty or absent elements.
- (b) No new dependencies: no package.json, lockfile, requirements or pyproject changes (the PR changes 5 files, all new source/tests). It uses stdlib only (calendar, dataclasses).
- (c) The SEL-429 validator is reused unchanged: there's no diff to services/ingestion/app/gs1_identifiers.py, and :131/:193-197 call validate_gtin/validate_gln/validate_sscc rather than reimplementing them.
- (d) frontend/src/components/labels/Gs1128LabelPanel.tsx isn't wired into any page yet. It's presentational only, with an empty state and no invented text. Noted, and that's fine.
CI at review time: still mostly pending. Failing: Engine Review Pass, Head SHA Check Guard, Frontend Unused File Guard (probably the unwired panel; a follow-up may need to wire it or allowlist it), PR Gate: Workflow Contract. PR Blocker Checklist was cancelled. A Test ingestion failure from main's _FakePersistence import is expected until #3528. Merge freeze is on, so no merge.

Reject symbols over the GS1 48-character limit
Enforce the GS1-128 aggregate limit after assembling the element string. The per-AI limits still allow a valid GTIN, 20-character lot, and 20-character serial to produce 61 data characters, while GS1 permits at most 48 data characters including AIs and separator FNC1s. Every entry point currently emits that non-conformant value as one symbol rather than rejecting or splitting it, and the default ZPL can consequently extend beyond the configured label width. See the GS1 General Specifications, §5.4.4.3.

Use compliant dimensions for the default ZPL barcode
Raise the default 203-dpi dimensions to the GS1 logistic-label minimums. This clamp always limits the X-dimension to three dots (about 0.375 mm), and the default height calculation produces 243 dots (about 30.4 mm); both are below the normative 0.495 mm X-dimension and 31.75 mm bar-height minimums, so even a short default label cannot pass GS1 verification. See the GS1 Logistic Label Guideline.

Enforce mandatory associations between application identifiers
Validate the element set before returning it, rather than validating each AI independently. For example, the current code accepts a label containing only AI 02 even though it requires AI 00 and AI 37, and accepts AI 10 or the supported date AIs without an associated AI 01/02. Because to_pdf and to_zpl each render a complete single-barcode label, these inputs produce structurally encoded but semantically invalid GS1 labels. The mandatory associations are defined in the GS1 General Specifications.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Restrict numeric fields to ASCII digits
Reject non-ASCII digits here and in the analogous AI 37 check instead of using str.isdigit(). Values such as ٢٦١٠٢٣ pass date validation, but _encode_atoms then emits Code 128 values around 1600; encode_gs1_128 returns invalid codewords and both renderers fail with an uncaught IndexError while indexing _PATTERNS. An ASCII digit check, matching the existing GS1 identifier validators, keeps accepted inputs encodable and turns this into a controlled Gs1LabelError.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

REVIEW: FAIL muse d1a5b36. This replaces my PASS in 5630835447.
tests/test_gs1_128_labels.py generates GTINs, SSCCs, GLNs, lots and dates from a seeded random generator. Nothing made-up is committed, but these are still invented identifiers, and C.Lee's rule is that tests use real recorded data or none.
To fix it, keep the data-free tests: structure, FNC1 placement, mod-103, ZPL escaping and PDF xref, using all-zero identifiers with a valid check digit where a value is needed. Remove the random-ID generation.
Everything else from my earlier review stands: the encoding, ZPL, PDF and injection handling are correct, there are no new dependencies, and the SEL-429 validator is reused unchanged.

Hide or disable downloads that have no callback.
If elements is present but a callback is absent, the corresponding button stays enabled and clicking it does nothing. Render each button only when its callback exists, or disable it when no download is available.

REVIEW: PASS muse 9cd04ca
Delta re-review of d1a5b36..9cd04ca (my prior FAIL: 5630842736).

- Dates are six fixed YYMMDD strings with year 00/01 (lines 40-46: 000100, 000229, 010229, 000431, 000001, 000101), each tied to a validation case (day-zero, leap/non-leap, Apr 31, month zero). Placeholder-grade, acceptable.
- Gs1128LabelPanel.tsx and its test are deleted; no remaining references in the tree.
- No changes under services/ingestion/app in the delta, so encoder/validator are unchanged since my prior review (SEL-429 validator reused unchanged, no new deps).

REVIEW: PASS muse 28a4abc (delta 9cd04ca..28a4abc). Only services/ingestion/tests/test_gs1_128_labels.py changed.
The fixed placeholder dates are gone. Dates are now derived from date.today() using rule-based offsets: day 00, Feb 29 in leap and non-leap years, the day after month end, and month 00. Lot, serial and count values come from the AI length limits as runs of '0'. There's no randomness and no invented lot strings or records. The identifiers are still all-zero plus check digit.

Use fixed dates for the date fixtures.
date.today() changes the inputs to these tests over time. In 2100, _NON_LEAP_DAY becomes 000229, but the validator interprets 00 as 2000 and accepts that leap day. Use fixed leap-year and non-leap-year fixtures so the test remains repeatable.
Based on retrieved learnings: “In test code, avoid using current system time ... Use fixed, hardcoded constants instead.”

REVIEW: PASS codex 2e55617 Checked out read-only. tests/test_gs1_128_labels.py: 37 passed. Values are restricted to GS1 character set 82 (no ^ or ~, so ZPL ^FD fields can't be injected), GTIN/GLN go through the existing check-digit validators, Start C + FNC1 + mod-103 + stop is asserted, and errors don't echo submitted values. Only failing check is visual-report (non-required). |

Non-ASCII digits break date encoding
Medium Severity
Date and count checks use str.isdigit, which accepts non-ASCII digits. Those values later become illegal Code 128 codewords, so to_pdf raises IndexError and some dates raise ValueError instead of Gs1LabelError. Identifier checks in gs1_identifiers already limit digits to ASCII [0-9].

Wide symbols overflow ZPL labels
Medium Severity
to_zpl clamps module width to at least 1 and never checks that the symbol fits width_dots. A full set of supported AIs on the default 4 inch 203 dpi label is wider than ^PW, so the printer clips the barcode and it will not scan.

Adds GS1-128 label generation (SEL-444).
What
services/ingestion/app/labels/gs1_128.py: AI element validation for AIs 00, 01, 02, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 21, 37, 410 and 414. Fixed-length AIs come before variable-length ones, with an FNC1 separator after each variable element except the last. The Code 128 encoder (Start C + FNC1, C/B switching, mod-103 check) produces ZPL (^XA…^XZ,^BCwith>;>8) and a hand-built 4×6 PDF 1.4.services/ingestion/app/gs1_identifiers.py, feat(ingestion): offline GS1 GTIN, GLN and SSCC check digit validator (SEL-429) #3506), imported unmodified.Dependency: none added. The PDF bytes are written by hand, and no paid GS1 access or API calls are used.
Real data only: the PR has no GTIN, lot, GLN or SSCC literals. Tests use no random or seeded identifiers. Every GTIN, SSCC and GLN is all zeros plus a check digit computed by the SEL-429 validator. Dates are built at runtime from today's date (day zero, leap day, Feb 29 in a non-leap year, the day past month end, month zero), lot, serial and count values come from the AI length limits, and there are no fixed date or lot literals. The tests check structure (AI ordering, FNC1 placement, check-digit and mod-103 math, ZPL framing, PDF header/EOF/xref offsets, and errors on empty or invalid input).
Tests: 37 label tests plus 145 existing identifier tests, 182 passed locally at 28a4abc. ruff check and ruff format --check pass.

FROZEN: merge freeze is on. Do not merge.
Note
Medium Risk
Barcode and identifier validation logic is correctness-critical for shipping labels, but the change is additive library code with broad tests and no production entrypoint wired yet.
Overview
Adds GS1-128 shipping label generation under
services/ingestion/app/labels/(SEL-444), with no new dependencies—Code 128, ZPL, and PDF 1.4 are implemented in-house.Callers pass AI/value pairs; the encoder validates a fixed set of application identifiers (SSCC, GTIN, dates, GLN, lot/serial/count), reorders fixed-length fields before variable-length ones, and inserts FNC1/GS separators only between variable fields. Fixed identifiers delegate check-digit validation to existing
app.gs1_identifiers;Gs1LabelErrormessages avoid echoing submitted values.Public outputs include Code 128 codewords, human-readable and element strings, Zebra ZPL (
^BCwith>;>8and subset switching), and a 4×6 inch PDF with drawn bars and HRI text. A large pytest suite covers ordering, charset limits, mod-103 checksum round-trips, ZPL edge cases (e.g.>escaping), and PDF structure—still no API route or UI in this PR.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 8ac7ed5.
