Every Prisma 8 package now declares engines.node "^22.18.0 || ^24.11.0 || >=26.0.0", the range create-prisma and its generated projects already use. The published @prisma/orm-* packages declared no engines field; the unpublished packages and examples declared ">=24". scripts/validate-node-engines.mjs holds the range and runs in pnpm lint:manifests. It fails when a publishable package has no engines.node, or when any package under packages/ declares a different range. ADR 269 records the decision and amends ADR 222. The README, Supported Versions page and the scaffold READMEs that prisma orm init writes state the range in prose. React Router 8.3 needs Node.js 22.22 or newer, so examples/react-router-demo declares "^22.22.0 || ^24.11.0 || >=26.0.0". ADR 269 now says examples may need a narrower range than the packages, that the check covers only packages/, and that tsdown lowers syntax but does not check built-in APIs. The ADR index no longer states that the prisma CLI and Composer already use the range. scripts/validate-node-engines.mjs now uses the package walk that scripts/list-publishable-packages.mjs exports, so the two scripts agree on which packages exist. n/a. There is no Linear ticket; this follows a product decision (2026-10-09) to give every Prisma 8 tool the same Node.js range.
Summary
Today a published Prisma 8 package states no Node.js requirement at all:
$ npm view @prisma/orm-postgres@8.0.0-rc.17 engines $A project generated by
create-prismaalready declares this range:This PR gives every Prisma 8 package in this repository that same
engines.node. In prose, Prisma 8 supports Node.js 22.18 or newer on the 22 line, 24.11 or newer on the 24 line, or 26 or newer, each with the npm that ships with that Node.js release (npm 10 on Node.js 22).Why one range
A user meets the Prisma 8 tools one after another:
create-prismascaffolds a project, the project installs@prisma/orm-postgres, and the user runs theprismaCLI and Composer. When the tools state different requirements, the user finds the strictest one only when an install warns or a command fails. With one range, meeting one tool's requirement means meeting all of them.create-prismaalready uses this range. prisma/prisma-cli#343 and prisma/composer#351 change theprismaCLI and Composer to it.Why these versions
.tsfiles without a flag. Users runnode migration.tsto emit a migration, so an older Node.js 22 cannot use Prisma 8 migrations. What changes for users
@prisma/orm-*package on a Node.js version outside the range now prints npm'sEBADENGINEwarning. Withengine-strict=truethe install fails instead.node22.18.0instead ofnode24, becausetsdowntakes its build target from the lowest version inengines.node. Today this changes no emitted JavaScript (see Testing performed).Changes
engines.nodeset to the range on the 16 published@prisma/orm-*packages (packages/9-public/@prisma/*), on the 68 unpublished packages underpackages/that the published ones bundle (from>=24), and on 12 of the 13 examples (from>=24).examples/react-router-demodeclares^22.22.0 || ^24.11.0 || >=26.0.0, because React Router 8.3 needs Node.js 22.22 or newer.scripts/validate-node-engines.mjs, run bypnpm lint:manifests. Its constantNODE_ENGINES_RANGEis the source of truth. It fails when a published package has noengines.node, or when any package underpackages/declares a different range. It covers onlypackages/, and it uses the package walk thatscripts/list-publishable-packages.mjsnow exports. The unpublished packages are included because their range sets the build target of code the published packages ship.docs/Supported Versions.md, the rootREADME.md, the scaffold READMEs thatprisma orm initwrites (with their snapshot), and the@repo/tsdownREADME state the range.changes: []) inupgrade-instructions/pending/node-engines-range/app/andupgrade-instructions/pending/node-engines-range/extension/: users and extension authors need to do nothing.Left unchanged on purpose
package.json(>=24),.tool-versions(24.16.0),CONTRIBUTING.mdand the onboarding docs. They set the toolchain for people who work on this repository and for CI, not the range users need.apps/lsp-playgroundandapps/telemetry-backend(>=24). They are internal apps and are not published..tool-versionsonly. We decided not to add jobs for Node.js 22.18 or 26. Support for them rests on the one-off Docker run below; a later change could use a newer Node.js API without CI noticing.skills/prisma-8/upgrading/andupgrade-instructions/releases/that say "Node 24 or later runs the TypeScript script directly". They belong to past releases.Temporal".Testing performed
