Summary

  • Make tqdm>=4.64 a required runtime dependency, so normal datacache installs include progress support without extras.
  • Preserve datacache[progress] as a no-op compatibility alias and keep displays opt-in with show_progress=True.
  • Keep tqdm lazily imported, update docs and broken-installation errors, and add packaging/import regression tests.
  • Prepare the 1.16.1 patch release with matching version, API reference, and changelog.

Review and verification

  • Reviewed the local diff: no blocking correctness or compatibility findings.
  • Full local suite: 809 tests pass, 93% coverage.
  • Focused packaging, progress, import-cost, and API-reference checks pass after the version bump.
  • Fresh wheel installation without extras installs tqdm automatically and displays a progress bar.
  • Ruff and git diff --check pass.

This does not enable progress displays by default or change cache-hit behavior.
