HasithaErandika and others added 3 commits October 7, 2026 02:53
Teachers apply for casual, medical, short, duty, maternity or no-pay
leave from My Leave, including a half day or a short leave on a day
they are already at school, and name a relief teacher for each
timetabled period they will miss. The Principal or a Vice Principal
approves or rejects it from Teacher Leave, which also holds the
yearly balances and the daily relief sheet. Approval marks the days
on staff attendance and notifies the teacher and relief teachers.

Rules follow the Sri Lankan public service leave scheme; see
docs/adr/0010-teacher-leave-rules.md.
…kflow

feat: teacher leave applications, relief and approval
- Run overlap and balance checks inside the create transaction under a per-teacher row lock
- Bulk insert relief rows with copyfrom
- Use date ranges instead of EXTRACT for leave-year filters
- Require approver rank to exclude another teacher from relief candidates
- Add a batch relief-candidates endpoint and use it from the relief table
- Keep the end date in step with half-day and short leave in the form
- Block submit until the affected periods query has loaded

backend/db/migrations/000055_create_teacher_leave.up.sql (1)

59-60: Add an index on teacher_leave_relief.leave_request_id.

ListLeaveRelief filters on r.leave_request_id = $1. Every relief-sheet and relief-candidate query also joins on lr.id = r.leave_request_id. The UNIQUE constraint (leave_request_id, date, period_number, class_id) puts leave_request_id first, so its index already serves these lookups. The join side does not need another index. No change is required here.

backend/internal/modules/leave/service.go (1)

330-355: The approval authority check and the status update are separate steps, so they can race.

mayDecide reads the applicant's rank before store.decide runs. decide filters only on status = 'pending'. Concurrent decisions are safe because only one update can win. However, the rank check is a TOCTOU read. It is low risk because positions change rarely. The real gap is that relief teachers named in the application are never re-checked at approval. A relief teacher can take on a conflicting duty after the application is submitted. ADR 0010 accepts this, because the approver sees "Not arranged" or conflicts manually. No change is required.

45-45: Do not collapse endDate when the user changes a date while dayPart is "full".

Line 45 runs on every set call. If a user sets endDate to 20 Oct, line 45 keeps it. If the user then picks a start date after 20 Oct, line 45 sets endDate to the new start date. That reset is acceptable. When the user switches the type from short back to casual, line 44 does not reset the stored endDate, but line 45 already forced it to equal startDate. As a result, the end-date picker shows a one-day range. This is the expected reset, so it is not a defect.

A different problem is real. canHalfDay in ApplyLeaveModal.tsx uses values.endDate. In single-day mode, the effective end date is the derived endDate. The stored and derived values stay equal because line 45 keeps them in sync, so the current behavior is consistent. No change is needed.

81-87: Do not submit relief rows from a stale or failed periods query.

toRequest builds relief from periods.data?.items. If datesReady is false, isValid allows the submit (!datesReady || ...), and periods.data can still hold data from an earlier key. With React Query v5, data does not persist across a key change unless placeholderData is set. Here enabled is false, so data is undefined and the request sends relief: []. Validation blocks the cases where datesReady is false, so this path is not reachable for a short leave without times. No defect remains.

frontend/src/features/leave/queries/useLeave.ts (1)

23-31: Invalidate staff attendance when a teacher cancels leave.

useDecideLeave invalidates staffAttendanceKeys.all because an approval writes onto attendance. useCancelLeave invalidates only leaveKeys.all. The teacher can cancel only pending requests (MyLeave.tsx line 40), and pending requests do not write attendance. The current behavior is correct.

100-110: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The backend already rejects self-selection. backend/internal/modules/leave/service.go:492-498 returns ErrActingIsSelf when actingTeacherID == teacherID. The proposed server-side check is therefore already present, and the remaining UI behavior is not a functional correctness defect.

frontend/src/app/routes/teacher.routes.tsx (1)

33-33: 🔒 Security & Privacy

The backend already protects these endpoints. teacherOrAdmin admits teachers at the route layer, but Register, Balances, and DailyRelief call approverRank, which returns ErrForbidden for teachers without Principal or Vice Principal positions. The handlers return 403 for that error. A frontend route guard is not required to enforce this security boundary.

backend/internal/modules/leave/routes.go-147-160 (1)

147-160: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

time.Now() carries a clock component, so a relief duty earlier the same day can drop off the list.

from := time.Now() is passed into a DATE parameter. pgtype encodes only the date part, so in normal cases the comparison is correct. However, the server runs in UTC. Near midnight in Sri Lanka (UTC+5:30), the UTC date is the previous day, so the default from date is wrong. yearParam has the same UTC issue at year boundaries. Use the school's timezone when computing "today".

## Decision

- The Principal's leave is approved by the Zonal Director, outside the
school. An administrator records that decision in OpenSchool. No one

Exclude teachers away for part of the requested day.

ListReliefCandidates excludes only full-day leave. A teacher with pending or approved half-day or short leave can therefore appear as available during the time away. Compare the requested period with the leave interval before returning the candidate. Based on learnings: “Candidates are teachers who are free in that period and not themselves away.”

frontend/src/features/leave/pages/teacher/MyLeave.tsx:98
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Cancel mutation has no guard against a double submit, and a stale error can persist.

cancel.mutate runs on every confirm click. pending={cancel.isPending} may disable the confirm button, but this depends on ConfirmActionModal. Also, onClose={() => setToCancel(null)} does not call cancel.reset(). A cancel error shown in the page notification then stays after the user closes the modal and opens it for another application. The error clears only when the user closes the notification.

Reset the mutation state when the modal closes.

Proposed fix
-        onClose={() => setToCancel(null)}
+        onClose={() => { setToCancel(null); cancel.reset(); }}

Based on learnings: "Clear/reset the error state when the user edits the relevant field(s) or retries, so stale error messages aren't shown after correction."

The stale-selection concern is supported. useLeaveForm sends relief[periodKey(p)] for every affected period without checking whether the selected teacher remains in the current candidate list. Require a relief row for every affected period.

If app.Relief is empty, validateRelief accepts the application without expanding its timetable. A teacher can submit leave that misses published periods, but the approver and daily relief sheet receive no rows to show as “Not arranged.” Compare the supplied period keys with the affected-period keys. Permit a missing relief teacher on a row, but do not omit the row. Based on learnings: “A period without a relief teacher is shown to the approver as ‘Not arranged’.”

Match the subject as well as the class and period.

A submitted row passes this check when its date, period, and class match, even if row.SubjectID names another subject. InsertLeaveRelief stores that subject, and the relief sheet displays it. Include the timetable subject in the match so a crafted request cannot give the approver an incorrect relief duty.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the self-decision gate. It allows decisions while the profile or role is still loading, and for non-teacher approvers.

Line 24 evaluates teacher?.id !== leave?.teacher_id. While useMyTeacherProfile() is loading or has failed, teacher is undefined. The expression is then true for any request that has a teacher_id, so the controls render for the approver's own request. The role value from useRole is also null until the token resolves. The result is a gap in which the controls flash and can be clicked.

The backend returns 403 for a non-administrator self-decision. The click therefore fails with the error banner. This duplicates the earlier review comment on this area, and the current gate leaves that gap open.

Fail closed. Show the controls only after the profile and role have loaded. Then compare the IDs.

Note: an approver who has no teacher profile, for example an administrator-only account, has a teacher that stays undefined after loading. The condition then passes, which is correct because they are not the applicant. The name canDecideOwnRequest is misleading. Rename it to canDecide.

4-4: 🎯 Functional Correctness

No import update is required.

formatNumber has no references outside frontend/src/shared/lib/number.ts. The remaining local call from formatPercent is valid, so removing the export does not break a caller.

frontend/src/features/school/hooks/useSchoolSetupSubmit.test.ts: 1

Comment thread docs/CODE_HEALTH_PLAN.md

- Every function is readable in one sitting. Target: cognitive complexity under 25 for new code, under 50 for any existing function after this plan.
- A rule or form lives in one place, so a bug is fixed once.
- Behaviour does not change. This is a refactor only.

Clarify the behavior-preservation scope.

The plan says it is refactor-only, but completed Phase 0 includes removing exports and changing the JWKS timeout. Limit the behavior-preservation rule to the refactor phases, or list these Phase 0 exceptions.

Review comment at @docs/CODE_HEALTH_PLAN.md at line 11:
Update the behavior-preservation statement in CODE_HEALTH_PLAN to apply only to
the refactor phases, or explicitly identify Phase 0’s export removals and JWKS
timeout change as exceptions.
