Author: Jonathan Fremerman (@jfremerman). This PR was opened through a shared Claude account signed in as @kazad, which is why GitHub shows that name as the opener. The commits are authored by @jfremerman, who directed, tested and signed off every change; Claude did the typing with him in the loop at each step.

Split out of #113 at the reviewer's request (2 of 4). Commits cafb558 and f84f2a6 there, combined into one and rebased onto current main.

What

The Summary page's links point at the combined dashboard and at our own Discord, and its simulator is stacked, zoomed out and named the Doppler Mapping Tool.

Why

The Retina network map and the Retina dashboard are now one site, so the page offered two links where there is one place to go, and the banner button still named the map alone. The only chat link under Help was the blah2 project's Discord, which is not where to ask about a Retina node. The simulator drew its two panels side by side, each too small to read; at its widest the beam ran off the sky panel; nothing said the beam could be steered; and a mouse grab left a black focus box on the handle.

Links

  • Resources: Offworld Labs, Retina Wiki, Network Map and Dashboard (app.retina.fm), Passive Radar News, blah2 Discord.
  • Help: the Retina Discord, then the support email. The blah2 Discord moved to Resources because it is that project's channel, not ours.
  • The banner button is "Network Map and Dashboard" and goes to the same address as the card. The separate Retina Dashboard button is gone.

Doppler Mapping Tool

  • The sky and the delay-Doppler plot are stacked at full width, sky first, and the sky is drawn 1.3 times further out so the beam at its widest fits.
  • The beam reaches a fixed range instead of the edge of the drawing, and the aircraft's heading is smoothed along the drawn path.
  • The handle is labelled "Grab to Aim", revealed by the script. A mouse or touch grab leaves no focus box; keyboard focus thickens the ring instead.
  • Known limit: steered far to one side at its widest, the beam still runs off the bottom of the panel.

The Retina Discord invite

The Retina Discord link is discord.gg/Fy7CN4DuhC, a permanent invite for the Retina.fm server, as fleet-and-naming.md requires. Discord's invite lookup reports no expiry for it (the earlier link on #113 expired on 6 November). The blah2 invite, discord.gg/ewNQbeK5Zn, is also permanent.

Testing

  • Full suite on this branch: 1047 passed, 1 failed (test_an_unwritable_location_reports_rather_than_raises, the root-only sandbox failure that also fails on untouched main). ruff check . and the vulture hook pass.
  • tests/test_fleet.py gains the links tests (banner link, Resources order, Help holding our own channels only, the blah2 Discord being a resource) and the simulator tests (section title, stacked layout, view box, label hidden until the script runs, no focus box).
  • The drawing and the grab were checked in a browser, not by the tests. On a test node (combined 20261007 - Add a guided tutorial and regroup the Configuration page #113 build) the Summary page rendered with the new links and the labelled handle.
  • Not verified: this branch rebased onto current main has not been on hardware.

Docs

docs/features/fleet-and-naming.md (Resources and Help links) and docs/architecture.md (the simulator's geometry and the handle).

Updated with the permanent Retina.fm invite (discord.gg/Fy7CN4DuhC, no expiry per Discord's invite lookup). The commit message and description say so; #118 is rebuilt on top of this.

Tested on a node and it works well: drawing, playback, aiming and the links all behave. The Doppler and range bounds, the PLOT/markup pairing and the label reveal all check out.

Two small things, not blocking:

  • Labels jump in size at 760 px. The max-width: 760px query in common.css keys off the window, not the panel. On a test node the panel was 642 px wide at both 760 and 761 px, yet the labels went from 22 px to 14 px. Anything from about 600 to 760 px wide gets oversized labels. Sizing them from the panel would fix it, for example with a container query.
  • Playback pauses when the sky scrolls away. The IntersectionObserver in flight-sim.js only watches #fs-map. With the panels stacked, scrolling down to watch the plot on a short screen pauses it. Observing the whole .sim block would fix it.

One thing to sort out before this merges: the commit's authorship is odd. It is authored as Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>, where every commit on main is authored by a person with Claude as Co-Authored-By. It also carries a Claude-Session: trailer that no commit on main has. Please re-author it as yourself and drop the session trailer.

…ler Mapping Tool

The Retina network map and the Retina dashboard are now one site, so the
Summary page offered two links where there is one place to go, and the
banner button still named the map alone. The only chat link under Help
was the blah2 project's Discord, which is not where to ask about a
Retina node. Resources is now Offworld Labs, Retina Wiki, Network Map
and Dashboard (app.retina.fm), Passive Radar News and the blah2 Discord,
running from ours out to the wider field. Help is our own channels only:
the Retina Discord first, then the support email. The banner button is
Network Map and Dashboard and goes to the same address as the card.

The simulator on the same page drew the sky and the delay-Doppler plot
side by side, each too small to read, and at its widest the antenna's
beam ran off the edge of the sky panel. Nothing said the beam could be
steered, and after a mouse grab the handle kept a black focus box. The
two panels are now stacked at full width, sky first. The sky is drawn
1.3 times further out, so the node, the tower and the beam at its widest
fit in the panel with room around them, and the beam reaches a fixed
range instead of the edge of the drawing. The aircraft's heading is
smoothed along the drawn path, which at the larger size had shown as a
sawtooth in the Doppler trace. The handle is labelled "Grab to Aim" and
the label moves with it; it is revealed by the script, so the page
without JavaScript does not promise something that cannot be done. A
mouse or touch grab no longer leaves a focus box; keyboard focus
thickens the ring instead, so the handle is still findable by Tab. The
section is titled Doppler Mapping Tool. One limit remains: steered far
to one side at its widest, the beam still runs off the bottom of the
panel.

The Retina Discord link is a permanent invite, as fleet-and-naming.md
requires; Discord's invite lookup reports no expiry for it.

tests/test_fleet.py covers the banner link, the Resources order, Help
holding our own channels only, the blah2 Discord being a resource, the
section title, the stacked layout, the view box, the label being hidden
until the script runs and the missing focus box. The drawing itself was
checked in a browser, not by the tests. Docs: fleet-and-naming.md
(Resources and Help links) and architecture.md (the simulator's geometry
and the handle).
