fix(builder): measure the shell's container rather than the viewport - #884
Conversation
…tive state The picker's content is portalled to document.body, so the shell's `hidden` and `inert` never reach it — both apply to the subtree, and a portal leaves it. Below the supported width the inspector is inert but stays mounted, so an open picker went on floating over the "needs a wider screen" notice, fully interactive, on top of the message telling the author the editor is unavailable. Derived from the shell's own active state rather than closed by an effect. Writing `open` false would discard the author's intent, and widening the window should bring the picker back exactly as it brings back everything else the shell deliberately keeps mounted. Deriving also leaves one source of truth rather than a copy that can fall out of step.
The shell sizes to its container — h-full w-full, no viewport units — while asking matchMedia about the window. Those agree only when the shell fills the screen, so an editor embedded in a narrow admin column on a wide display was told it fitted and compressed the rail, panel and canvas past their minimums; a wide column on a narrow display got the opposite. Neither direction is reachable by choosing a different breakpoint, because it is the wrong quantity. A ResizeObserver replaces the media query. The observer follows whichever root is currently VISIBLE, and that is the part worth stating: the editor stays mounted behind the narrow notice so unsaved slot state survives, and its wrapper is display:contents when visible and hidden when narrow, so observing it reports width 0 for the whole narrow state and the shell could never measure its way back above the threshold. The notice holds the observer while narrow, the shell root while wide, and exactly one of them is on screen at a time. A callback ref rather than an effect, since the observed element is replaced when the answer flips. contentRect rather than getBoundingClientRect, because canvas zoom scales the latter against a CSS-pixel minimum. A missing ResizeObserver falls back to rendering fully, matching the initial state's reasoning that a shell which cannot measure should not show a notice it has no evidence for. The harness takes an optional container width so a test can give the shell a narrow box inside a wide window, which is the arrangement that tells the two measurements apart.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughBuilder shells now measure their containing space instead of the viewport. Narrow shells remain mounted but become hidden and inactive. When a container grows back into the 1280–1327px range, the editor incorrectly remains unavailable. The full shell is measured without padding, but this fallback adds p-6; because .nx-builder-chrome enforces box-sizing: border-box and the observer compares contentRect.width, the fallback reports 48px less than the actual container width. After entering the narrow state, the shell therefore requires roughly 1328px to reopen even though 1280px is documented as sufficient. Observe an unpadded wrapper or consistently use the same box measurement in both states.

The measuring hook repeated `width >= MIN_SHELL_WIDTH` inline while shell-state already exports and tests `fitsFullShell` as that answer. Two implementations of one question agree the day they are written, and these would have first disagreed at exactly the boundary the helper's own tests pin, with each side looking correct on its own. The local boolean was also called `fitsFullShell`, which shadowed the helper and is why the duplication was easy to write. It is `shellFits` now, so the name belongs to the predicate. The helper's parameter is renamed from `viewportWidth` to `width`: the quantity is the width of the box the shell was given, which is no longer the window's.

…hold The observer follows whichever root is visible, and those roots do not carry the same padding: the narrow notice is p-6, the shell root has none. contentRect excludes padding, so the same container measured 48px narrower while the notice was up. That reopened the deadlock inside a 48px band. A container growing back to anywhere between the threshold and the threshold plus that padding stayed below it and the notice never left, while a fresh render at the same width showed the editor — behaviour depending on how a width was arrived at rather than on the width. The border box is a property of the container rather than of whichever root happens to be observing it, so padding can change on either without moving the threshold. Like contentRect and unlike getBoundingClientRect it is a layout size, so canvas zoom does not scale it against a CSS-pixel minimum. The fallback is offsetWidth, which is the same box; falling back to contentRect would reinstate the sensitivity. Both recovery tests now grow into that band. Growing comfortably past the threshold clears it whether or not the padding is subtracted, so neither test could previously tell the two implementations apart. The unit observer models the padding difference for the same reason.

The list was copied from an existing changeset rather than derived, so it named 23 of the 24 packages that version together and omitted @nextlyhq/module-specifiers, which was added to the workspace after the file it was copied from. A package left out of the group is bumped with no changelog entry. Regenerated from the workspace, which is what the release checker compares against.

…pace Two readings of the container were wrong for the same underlying reason: the observed element kept being something other than the box the regions get. Following whichever root was visible made the answer depend on that root's padding — the notice is p-6 and the shell root is not — so a container growing back into a 48px band never recovered. Reading the border box fixed that asymmetry and introduced its mirror, because a border box includes padding or a border the caller put on className, decoration the regions never receive: a 1280px root with p-6 reported that it fitted while leaving 1232px to lay out in. One always-rendered wrapper now carries the caller's className and nothing else, and its content box is measured. That box is the space inside the host's decoration, which is what its children are given, and it is the same element in both states so no branch's padding can move the threshold. The notice's own padding sits inside it and is invisible to the measurement. The conditional measuring ref and the ref merge it required are gone with it. The F6 ambiguity count now counts ACTIVE shells rather than mounted ones. Per-container measurement lets siblings disagree about whether they fit, so a form can hold one usable editor beside several behind their notices; counting every mount left the only editor that could answer declining because it saw more than one, while the others declined as disabled, and the key reached nothing.

Deactivate the inspector's portalled selects
When an inspector Select is open and the shell's container alone shrinks below the threshold, this wrapper hides and inerts only the in-place subtree, while SelectContent still portals into the admin portal root (packages/ui/src/components/select.tsx:122-146). Existing controls such as Inspector.tsx:195-209 and controls/primitives.tsx:125-135 therefore leave a visible, interactive dropdown over the new narrow-container notice; unlike the media picker and command palette, they never consume useShellIsActive. Make these overlays derive their open state from the shell's existing active answer, or otherwise place them under the inert boundary.

The defect is real and I am not disputing it. I am disputing that it belongs in this PR, and proposing a different fix from the one suggested — with the measurements for both.
It is not new here. Measured against origin/main:
inert={!— 1 occurrence inbuilder-shell.tsxonmainneeds a wider screen— 2 occurrences onmain- files this PR changes that contain a
<Select: 0 (Inspector.tsx,controls/primitives.tsxandQueryLoopSettings.tsxare all untouched)
So on main right now, narrowing the browser WINDOW below MIN_SHELL_WIDTH inerts the inspector while an open SelectContent portals to the admin's portal root and floats over the notice, exactly as described. This PR changes how the narrow state is REACHED — the container rather than the viewport — not whether portalled overlays escape the inert boundary. The data-testid and line number in the finding point at code that is unchanged from main.
On the suggested fix, I would rather not. "Make these overlays derive their open state from the shell's active answer" means editing 7 <Select sites across 3 files, and the eighth — whatever control is added next — will not know to do it. That is the shape AGENTS.md calls out: a documented rule with nothing enforcing it is not a control. I did exactly that for MediaControl in this PR because it was one site already in scope; repeating it seven more times would be building the checklist rather than the boundary.
There is a real boundary available, and it is why I want it in its own change. packages/ui already has PortalProvider, and SelectContent — like DropdownMenu, ContextMenu and every other portalled component — resolves its container from it (select.tsx:119). The shell can provide a container that lives INSIDE its hidden/inert wrapper, and then every present and future overlay rendered within the shell inherits the boundary with no per-control knowledge at all. React context reaches through portals, so this works for content that is already portalled.
What makes that a separate PR rather than one more commit here:
RootLayout.tsx:125sets the admin's single portal root deliberately, because an overlay defaulting todocument.bodylands outside.nextly-adminwhere the scoped rules and tokens do not reach (portal-docs.test.tsstates this). Nesting a second container changes where editor overlays sit relative to admin-level ones, so stacking and z-index need checking in a browser, not reasoned about.- It changes behaviour for every overlay in the editor, including the
MediaPickerDialogfix in this PR, so it wants its own e2e rather than riding on a PR about measurement. - This PR is on its fourth review round and its subject is which box the shell measures. Adding a portal-layering change to it makes both harder to review and to revert.
Leaving this thread OPEN deliberately, since the defect exists and I am not fixing it here — resolving it would be the failure mode this repo keeps finding, where a green thread stands in for work that never happened. Happy to take it as the next PR against main, where it also fixes the viewport case that is live today.
If you would rather see the seven call sites patched in this PR anyway, say so and I will do it — but I would want the boundary afterwards regardless, or the eighth control reintroduces it.

Keep chrome customization classes on the chrome element
When a host uses the public className prop to re-theme or extend the chrome, moving that class to this new wrapper silently breaks selectors and custom-property overrides that previously applied to the .nx-builder-chrome element. For example, a class defining --nx-builder-surface on the wrapper is overridden by the inner chrome's own declaration, so the documented class-based customization no longer takes effect; preserve a way for caller styling classes to reach the chrome while measuring the undecorated content box separately.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
Closes the last two review findings from #865, one of which was stranded by that PR's merge.
Why this is a follow-up rather than part of #865
6d9a44794— the media picker fix — was pushed while GitHub was computing #865's merge, so it never landed. Verified by content rather than by ancestry: the markeropen={open && shellIsActive}is present at the branch tip and absent from merge commit83f05bf24, with a positive control confirming the search resolves the path. Zero force-push events, so the tail check is sound. It is restored here by cherry-pick.1. The shell measured the wrong box
useFitsFullShellaskedmatchMedia("(min-width: 1280px)")— the WINDOW — while the shell sizes to its CONTAINER (h-full w-full, no viewport units anywhere). Those are the same number only when the shell happens to fill the screen.Neither direction is reachable by picking a different breakpoint. It is the wrong quantity.
The part that is not obvious
There is no element that always has a measurable box, which is why this is not a one-line swap:
display: contentswhen visible (no box at all) andhiddenwhen narrow (box 0).So observing the wrapper reports width 0 for the whole narrow state,
0 >= MIN_SHELL_WIDTHnever becomes true, and the shell can never measure its way back to wide. That deadlock looks like a working fix until someone narrows a window and widens it again.The observer therefore follows whichever root is VISIBLE — the notice while narrow, the shell root while wide, exactly one at a time. Also: a callback ref rather than an effect, because the observed element is REPLACED when the answer flips;
contentRectrather thangetBoundingClientRect, since canvas zoom scales the latter against a CSS-pixel minimum; and a missingResizeObserverfalls back to rendering fully, matching the initial state's existing reasoning.Design credit: worked out in
tasks/left-tasks/2026-08-16-1900-shell-measures-viewport-not-container.md, including the three candidate approaches. This takes option 1.2. The media picker floated over the "needs a wider screen" notice
MediaPickerDialogportals todocument.body, so the shell'shiddenandinert— which govern its subtree — never reach it. An open picker stayed visible and interactive on top of the message saying the editor was unavailable.Fixed by DERIVING from the shell's own state,
open={open && shellIsActive}, rather than closing it with an effect: writingopenfalse discards the author's intent, and widening should restore the picker exactly as it restores everything else the shell keeps mounted.Testing, and one honest limitation
The deadlock cannot be unit-tested, and I confirmed that rather than assuming it. jsdom has no
ResizeObserver; the suite's fake reports whatever width the test sets regardless of which element is observed, so it answers identically for the hidden wrapper and the visible root. I wrote the deadlock deliberately and the unit file stayed GREEN. The unit test now claims only that a later measurement reaches the render, and says so in the file. The real coverage is Playwright, where elements have boxes. The harness takes an optional
?container=width so a test can give the shell a narrow box inside a wide window — the arrangement that tells the two measurements apart, and one no viewport-sized harness can express. Three tests at a fixed 1600px window:Stub-verified: with the deadlock reimplemented, the third test FAILS and the other two pass. That is the assertion the unit suite could not make.
The unit suite's
ResizeObserverstub changed from inert to driven, and the reason is recorded in the file: inert no longer abstains from the fits-or-not question, it answers it permanently "fits" and makes the narrow branch unreachable.Verification
