Summary

  • Speech engine: record which (engine, model, device) request a loaded engine was built for (_stt_serves). A load that finishes after the user picked something else is dropped instead of installed, and a leftover engine for an old pick is replaced rather than reused.
  • Cleanup model: Cleaner records the (model_path, wanted_runtime) it loaded for. ready now means resident and still the configured model. The new resident property means holding any model.
  • CleanerLifecycle now unloads a superseded model under its own lock and loads the right one. apply_settings no longer calls cleaner.unload() from the UI thread, because that could race a load already in flight.
  • Adds changelog fragment changelog.d/model-swap-race.bugfix.md.

Needs attention before merge: the branch diff also contains generated bakeoff and evalset artifacts that look unrelated to this fix. They are .cache/bakeoff/* (including rnnoise.dll and a gtcrn-src submodule pointer), evalset/bakeoff/*, evalset/clean/* and evalset/mixed-*/*.wav. They should probably be dropped from this PR or ignored in .gitignore. The only intended changes are cadent/app.py, cadent/cleanup.py and the changelog fragment.

Testing

  • Not run: no tests were run for this change.
  • To check: pick a different speech model while the previous one is loading. The new model should end up resident and the old one should be logged as superseded.
  • To check: change the cleanup model while one is loading. Only the newly picked model should remain resident.
  • To check: turn cleanup off mid-load. The model should end up unloaded.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Speech recognition and transcript-cleanup models now switch reliably when settings change during loading, preventing an outdated model from being used.
    • Disabling transcript cleanup now unloads its model, and changing unrelated cleanup settings avoids unnecessary reloads.
  • Documentation
    • Added benchmark results comparing speech recognition accuracy and audio-processing performance across models, noise conditions, and audio-processing options.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Speech and cleanup model loading now tracks the configuration associated with each engine or resident model. The pull request also adds evaluation corpus manifests, recognition benchmark results, noise measurements, and timing records for noise-reduction candidates.

Changes

Model Loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configuration-bound speech model loading
cadent/app.py, tests/test_app_downloads.py
Speech engine loading now captures the configured engine, model, and device. It adopts a completed engine only when the request remains current. Tests cover model changes during loading and reuse when the configuration is unchanged.
Cleanup model readiness and lifecycle
cadent/cleanup.py, cadent/app.py, tests/test_cleanup.py, changelog.d/model-swap-race.bugfix.md
Cleaner readiness now checks the resident model against the configured path and runtime. Lifecycle reconciliation unloads stale models and continues until the requested state is settled. Tests cover model changes during loading, stale models, disabled cleanup, and max_tokens changes.

Noise Reduction Evaluation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Evaluation corpus and references
evalset/clean/*, evalset/mixed*/manifest.json
Added clean transcript references and audio manifests with clip references, noise labels, and SNR values.
Recognition, noise, and timing results
evalset/bakeoff/*, evalset/map.md
Added faster-whisper and Parakeet recognition results, WER summaries, SNR measurements, CPU timing records, and evaluation scope notes.

Changing the speech model while a load is in progress mostly works now, but two problems remain. A failed startup probe for the old model can download that model while the new one waits, and Cancel then stops the old download instead of the new one. A failure from the old model can also stay on screen after the new model is ready. Fix the download handoff before merging.

whether request is still current; if it has been superseded, return CANCELLED

- Record which request each speech engine was built for, and discard a finished load if config.json has since changed
- Track which model path and runtime the cleanup model was loaded for, so `ready` is false for a superseded one
- Let the cleanup lifecycle unload a superseded model under its own lock instead of from the UI thread
- Add a changelog fragment
A load with no download handle of its own (startup preload, wizard finish,
GPU-pack reload) now claims the key with setdefault and yields when a
newer request already holds it, instead of evicting that request's handle.
A superseded load that fails is no longer reported, and every fresh engine
-- not only a downloaded one -- clears the model-failed fault.

Addresses CodeRabbit review on #75:
- app.py:230: fixed by claiming the handle rather than the suggested
re-check of config, which still left a window open while the tray
  message was shown
- app.py:297: fixed as suggested; also moved stt_loaded so a model loaded
from disk clears an earlier failure's fault

Fixed (adjusted):

  • cadent/app.py:230 — A load that has no download handle of its own (startup preload, wizard finish, GPU-pack reload) now claims the key with setdefault. If a newer request already holds the key, the load gives way and returns CANCELLED instead of overwriting that request's handle. The waiting worker that owns the handle loads what config.json now asks for. Re-checking the config, as suggested, would still leave a window open while the tray message was shown; claiming the key closes it, and it also stops the stale "Downloading" message.
  • cadent/app.py:297 — Fixed as suggested: a failed load whose request has been superseded returns CANCELLED and is not reported. stt_loaded now fires for every fresh engine, not only a downloaded one, so a model loaded from disk also clears an earlier failure's fault. That bug predates this PR.

Skipped:

  • Docstring coverage check (61% against an 80% target). Most of the functions counted are tests and small helpers, and the repo doesn't enforce a coverage target.

Also in this push:

  • Rewrote the original commit to remove evalset/ (2,367 files) and .cache/bakeoff/ (8 files, including a 14 MB rnnoise.dll). They had been staged by accident and are unrelated to this fix, so the walkthrough's "Noise Reduction Evaluation" section no longer applies.
  • Three new regression tests in tests/test_app_downloads.py. Each fails without this commit. Full suite: 1059 passed, 3 skipped.
