Motivation

Fixes #12644.

In parseMarkdownContentTitle, trailing hash characters were stripped using the regular expression /\s*(?:\{#*[\w-]+\}|#+)$/. Because \s* matches zero whitespace, headings ending with a # such as # Learn C# or # F# in Action had their trailing hash removed, causing the document's page title, sidebar label, and pagination to become Learn C instead of Learn C#.

Per the CommonMark specification (Section 4.2 ATX headings), an optional closing sequence of # characters must be preceded by at least one space or tab. A heading like # foo# retains the # as part of the heading text.

Implementation

  • In packages/docusaurus-utils/src/markdownUtils.ts, separated custom heading ID removal (\s*\{#*[\w-]+\}$) from closing ATX # sequence removal (\s+#+$), ensuring only closing hashes preceded by whitespace are stripped.
  • Added comprehensive unit tests in packages/docusaurus-utils/src/__tests__/markdownUtils.test.ts covering:
    • # Learn C# -> Learn C#
    • # Learn C# # -> Learn C#
    • # Learn C# {#learn-c-sharp} -> Learn C#
    • # foo# -> foo#

Test Plan

  • Ran pnpm vitest run packages/docusaurus-utils (all 412 tests passed).
  • Ran pnpm format:diff and pnpm tsc -p packages/docusaurus-utils/tsconfig.json --noEmit (clean).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Markdown heading titles now preserve trailing hash characters that are part of the title, such as in “C#” or “foo#,” rather than treating them as closing markers.
    • Closing hash markers and custom anchor IDs are excluded from parsed titles, including when both appear on the same heading. Literal hashes within the title remain visible.

Walkthrough

The title parser now separates custom heading ID removal from closing-hash removal. Added tests cover literal hashes in titles, closing markers, custom anchors, and an empty title.

Changes: ATX heading title parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Title cleanup and regression tests
packages/docusaurus-utils/src/markdownUtils.ts, packages/docusaurus-utils/src/__tests__/markdownUtils.test.ts
The parser removes a trailing custom heading ID separately from closing hashes, and strips closing hashes only when they follow whitespace or start the title. Tests cover literal hashes, closing markers, custom anchors, and an empty title.

The change preserves literal trailing hashes while removing closing heading markers. Empty-heading fallback behavior remains unchanged and can be addressed separately; no merge-blocking regression is established.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title states that trailing hashes in a heading title are kept unless they are preceded by a space. This matches the main change in parseMarkdownContentTitle, which separates custom ID removal from closing ATX hash removal and keeps hashes such as in Learn C#. The title is specific and concise, and it fits the linked issue about heading titles like Learn C# being shortened to Learn C.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #12644 requires that a heading such as # Learn C# keep its trailing # as title text. A closing ATX # sequence must be preceded by whitespace to be removed. At the reviewed head, parseMarkdownContentTitle in packages/docusaurus-utils/src/markdownUtils.ts first removes a custom heading ID with /\s*\{#*[\w-]+\}$/. It then removes closing hashes with /(?:^|\s+)#+$/. For Learn C#, no whitespace precedes the final #, so the hash is kept. For Learn C# #, the closing sequence # is removed, giving Learn C#. For Learn C# {#learn-c-sharp}, the ID is removed and the hash is kept. For foo#, the hash is kept. The unit tests in markdownUtils.test.ts cover these four cases. The change fixes the page title, sidebar label, and pagination label source described in #12644. The incremental change since the previous review only refines this regex and does not alter the earlier conclusion.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed diff for packages/docusaurus-utils/src/markdownUtils.ts changes only the two replace calls in parseMarkdownContentTitle. This change directly implements the trailing-hash rule required by #12644. The test file changes add unit tests for the same parser behavior. No unrelated source change is present in the inspected evidence. The test file was not re-read in this pass, but its summary describes only title-parsing cases.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.

Treat an all-hash heading title as empty.

For # # or # ###, the title capture is only # characters. The new \s+#+$ step requires whitespace before the hashes inside that capture, so it never matches. The title becomes # where the previous code produced an empty title. CommonMark treats these as empty headings. The # then becomes the page title, sidebar label, and pagination label, because frontMatter.title ?? contentTitle ?? baseID only falls back on null or undefined.

packages/docusaurus-utils/src/__tests__/markdownUtils.test.ts:505-508
Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff

Fall back to the document name when an empty heading gives an empty title.

With # # and no front-matter title, the parser returns contentTitle: ''. The docs, blog, and pages title selectors use ??, which keeps the empty string. The doc sidebar label then becomes empty. The new test at markdownUtils.test.ts:505-508 asserts this empty value. Treat an empty parsed title as absent so the selectors fall back to the file-derived title.
