ESP32-COCO Documentation

Community documentation for the ESP32-COCO, a bare-metal hardware emulator for the Tandy/Radio Shack TRS-80 Color Computer 1, 2, and 3, built on ESP32-S3 hardware by Cedric Beaudoin.

Official home: https://github.com/mast4rbug/ESP32-CoCo — also the future home for firmware update files and, potentially, source code.

This repository is a community-maintained knowledge base. The device is under active development and had no central docs before this repo. Everything here is sourced from the CoCo community (Facebook group, demo videos, and hands-on testing) and is a work in progress. See CONTRIBUTING.md if you want to help fill it in.

Status: scaffold. Most pages below are outlines with TODO markers, not finished docs. Sections are structured so content can be dropped in incrementally.

What is the ESP32-COCO?

The ESP32-COCO is a low-cost hardware emulator that reproduces a TRS-80 Color Computer 3 on ESP32-S3 hardware — backward compatible with CoCo 1 and CoCo 2 software, with no separate/explicit CoCo 1 or CoCo 2 mode — aiming to run original CoCo software and games without original Tandy hardware. It is an actively developed, community-driven project — details in this repo will be updated as the device and firmware evolve.
