📌 Project Overview

This project implements an automatic motion sensor light that detects movement using an IR (Infrared) proximity sensor and controls a lighting system through digital logic circuits. The design utilizes the CD4017 decade counter IC as the main control unit, eliminating the need for microcontrollers or programming.

Key Highlights

  • 🔍 Contactless Detection: Uses IR technology to detect motion/obstacles
  • 🎛️ Pure Hardware Solution: No programming or microcontroller required
  • ⚡ Relay-Based Control: Can switch AC/DC loads safely
  • 💡 Energy Efficient: Automatic on/off based on motion detection
  • 📚 Educational Value: Demonstrates fundamental digital electronics concepts

✨ Features

Feature Description
Motion Detection IR sensor detects objects within 2-30 cm range
Automatic Control Light turns ON when motion detected, OFF when clear
Visual Indicators Red LED (standby) and Green LED (active) status
Load Control 9V relay controls 6V lamp or other compatible loads
Low Power Operates on 9V battery for portability
No Coding Pure hardware implementation using logic ICs

Circuit Sections

  1. Sensor Module: IR transmitter/receiver pair
  2. Control Logic: CD4017 decade counter with clock input
  3. Driver Stage: BC557/BC547 transistor configuration
  4. Output Stage: Relay with flyback diode protection
  5. Power Supply: 9V regulated supply with decoupling capacitors

🔬 Simulation

The circuit was simulated in Proteus before being built on a breadboard. The simulation sources are in proteus/.

File What it is
proteus/Proteus Project File.pdsprj The Proteus design — open this
proteus/Proteus Project File.pdsprj.workspace Proteus layout/workspace state for the design
proteus/infrared-sensor-library/ IR sensor model used by the design (.LIB, .HEX, .IDX + a .DSN demo)

The IR sensor is not a stock Proteus part, so a third-party library is bundled in proteus/infrared-sensor-library/. Keep those four files together and with their original names — Proteus resolves .LIB/.HEX/.IDX by name. To use it, load the library in Proteus' Library Manager first, then open the .pdsprj.

📝 Notes

  • Sensor naming. The component list previously read "HC-SR501 or similar". The HC-SR501 is a PIR module — a different sensing principle from the IR obstacle/proximity module this project is built around, so the entry now reads generically. If you know the exact module used, put the part number back here.
  • No source code. This is a pure digital-logic design; the only files that can be "run" are the Proteus simulation, and Proteus itself is required.
  • Repository size. media/simulation.mp4 is ~12 MB and dominates the repo. It is a genuine deliverable, but if the repo is ever cloned widely, hosting it as a GitHub Release asset would be the better home.
