Making historical sources searchable, computable, and askable.

I am a historian of Joseon Korea and a digital history researcher at Sogang University, South Korea. I received my Ph.D. in History from Sogang University, and my primary field is the military and socio-economic history of the Joseon dynasty.

My doctoral research examined how the military service system of early Joseon changed through daerip (代立), the practice of employing substitutes to perform military service. I trace how the spread of substitution and the standardization of military-service costs gradually transformed direct labor obligations into state-managed substitution and military taxation.

Alongside this traditional historical research, I combine historical criticism with computational methods to analyze large-scale historical records and scholarly metadata. I am also interested in designing digital research environments in which historians can search, analyze, and ask questions of historical sources.

• Military Service and Substitution in Early Joseon Korea
  Examining the transformation of Joseon’s household-based military mobilization system through daerip (代立), the practice of employing substitutes to perform military service. This research investigates the hidden costs and unequal distribution of military obligations, the emergence of a market for military labor, and the gradual standardization of substitution fees. It explains how direct mobilization based on personal labor developed into state-managed substitution and military taxation.

• Ask Sillok
  A retrieval-augmented generation system for asking historical questions about the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. The project explores how historical archives can move from being merely searchable to becoming reliable and askable research environments.

• AI for Historical Sources
  Developing history-adapted RAG pipelines, domain-specific embedding models, structured datasets, and historian-in-the-loop evaluation methods for Korean historical records. This research focuses on improving retrieval quality, historical grounding, and the scholarly reliability of AI-generated answers.

• Quantitative and Spatial History of Joseon Korea
  Analyzing population, military-service, and administrative data from sources such as the Sejong Sillok Jiriji through historical GIS, statistical analysis, and inequality measures. This research examines the regional distribution of military obligations and the socio-economic structure of early Joseon society.

• Distant Reading of Korean Historiography
  Building a longitudinal dataset of more than 245,000 bibliographic records from the Bulletin of Korean Historical Studies. The project combines distant reading, text mining, bibliometric analysis, and knowledge-landscape mapping to trace long-term changes in research topics, scholarly concepts, publication practices, and the spatial structure of Korean historical scholarship.

• Digital History as Historical Scholarship
  Examining how databases, digital tools, and computational analysis contribute to the production of historical knowledge. This research considers digital history not simply as the application of technology, but as a methodological approach that can generate new historical questions, evidence, and interpretations.

저는 서강대학교에서 연구하고 있는 조선시대사 및 디지털역사학 연구자입니다. 서강대학교에서 역사학 박사학위를 받았으며, 주된 전공은 조선시대 군사사와 사회경제사입니다.

박사학위논문에서는 조선 전기의 군역제도가 대립(代立), 곧 다른 사람을 고용하여 군역을 대신 수행하게 하는 관행을 통해 어떻게 변화했는지를 연구했습니다. 대립의 확산과 군역 비용의 표준화가 인신에 대한 직접적인 노동 동원을 국가가 관리하는 대립과 군역의 조세화로 전환시키는 과정을 추적하고 있습니다.

이러한 전통 역사학 연구와 함께 사료비판에 기초한 역사 연구와 디지털 분석 방법을 결합하여 대규모 역사자료와 학술 메타데이터를 분석합니다. 또한 역사학자가 사료를 검색하고 분석하며 질문할 수 있는 새로운 디지털 연구환경을 설계하는 데 관심을 두고 있습니다.

  조선의 호 단위 군역 동원체제가 대립, 곧 다른 사람을 고용하여 군역을 대신 수행하게 하는 관행을 통해 어떻게 변화했는지를 연구합니다. 군역 수행에 수반되는 숨겨진 비용과 부담의 불균등한 귀착, 군사노동 시장의 형성, 대립가의 표준화 과정을 분석합니다. 이를 통해 인신에 대한 직접적인 노동 동원이 국가 관리의 대립과 군역의 조세화로 전환되는 장기적 과정을 설명하고 있습니다.

  『조선왕조실록』에 역사적 질문을 제시하고 답변을 얻을 수 있도록 구축한 검색증강생성(RAG) 시스템입니다. 역사 아카이브를 단순히 ‘검색 가능한 자료’에서 학술적으로 신뢰할 수 있는 ‘질문 가능한 연구환경’으로 전환하는 방법을 탐구합니다.

• 역사자료를 위한 인공지능
  한국사 자료의 특성에 맞는 RAG 파이프라인, 도메인 특화 임베딩 모델, 구조화 데이터셋, 역사학자 참여형 평가 방법을 개발하고 있습니다. 검색 성능과 역사적 근거성, AI 생성 답변의 학술적 신뢰성을 향상시키는 데 중점을 둡니다.

• 조선시대의 계량사 및 공간사 연구
  『세종실록지리지』를 비롯한 역사자료의 인구·군역·행정 데이터를 역사 GIS, 통계 분석, 불평등 지표를 활용하여 분석합니다. 이를 통해 조선 초기 군역 부담의 지역적 분포와 사회경제적 구조를 규명하고 있습니다.

• 한국사 연구사의 멀리서 읽기
  약 24만 5천 건 이상의 『한국사연구휘보』 서지정보를 장기 시계열 데이터셋으로 구축하고 있습니다. 멀리서 읽기, 텍스트마이닝, 계량서지학, 지식 지형도 분석을 결합하여 한국사학계의 연구 주제와 학술 개념, 출판 관행, 지식 생산의 공간 구조가 어떻게 변화했는지를 추적합니다.

• 역사학 연구로서의 디지털역사학
