feat(history-logger): read keepRotatedFiles from user config - #109
Conversation
The daemon carried its own copy of a sweep. A scheduled directory was organized by different code from the cron path, and the daemon wrote no history row and no rollback handle, so a scheduled pass moved files that nothing could put back. There is one pass now. A daemon tick and `once --apply` produce the same history row, carry the same manifest id, and honour the same conflict strategy. Two things change for watches that never set them: - files under an hour old are left alone, defaulting to min_file_age_minutes 60, because a file still being written to is half a file - a sweep moves at most 300 files, leaving the rest for the next tick, so a folder that accumulated files overnight no longer moves all of them at once The overlap guard moved from an in-memory Set to `noOverlap` on the cron task itself. The Set refused the second of two passes over one directory, which meant an overlap was silently skipped rather than prevented. Now the scheduler drops the second tick. Different directories still sweep in parallel, and triggerNow no longer refuses to run. The daemon also picks up configured customRules now. It built its organizer without them, so a scheduled directory was categorized by the built-in extension map alone while a manual organize of the same directory used the user's rules. The pass tests now unlink the manifests they create. Under jest every test worker shares one rollback directory, so a leftover manifest changes which one is globally newest, which is what a no-id undo_last_operation picks up. Commit made by Space Bunny Free in opencode on behalf of Kriday.
`full_organization_flow` organized with `dry_run: false` and then called `undo_last_operation` with no `manifest_id`, which takes whichever manifest is globally newest. Under jest every worker writes manifests into one shared directory, so the undo restored whichever batch another test file had finished most recently, and the assertions against this directory then saw an empty tree. Three green full-suite runs followed by a red branch is a race, not a logic error, and it needed the ordering pinned rather than lucked into. Reproduced before fixing: a signed manifest stamped an hour ahead, written into the shared directory, failed the old test with `Expected value: "image.jpg" / Received array: []`, which is the signature the issue reported. The test now owns its storage. `paths.js` is redirected to a per-file temp root with `jest.unstable_mockModule`, the pattern `output-schema` and `verify-integrity` already use, so it neither reads nor writes the developer's real config dir. The undo also names the `manifest_id` the organize returned, read from `structuredContent` rather than parsed out of the markdown. A second test pins the ordering. It writes a foreign manifest after its own organize, so that one is always the newer manifest, and asserts the undo still restores its own files. Dropping the explicit `manifest_id` makes it fail with the same signature the race produced, so a simplification back to a blind undo cannot pass quietly. Review
Checked out f09c5f7 (matches headRefOid). Gate on the head: npm run build, lint, typecheck:tests, docs:check all clean; full suite 105 suites / 1472 passed / 0 failed; the three touched history suites 60/60. Everything below is verified on that checkout, not read off the PR body.
Blockers
1. keepRotatedFiles is now read off the developer's real config, and one suite goes red because of it.
src/services/history-logger.service.ts:117 resolves the count by calling loadUserConfig(), which reads getUserConfigPath() — the live ~/.config/file-organizer-mcp/config.json (or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME). tests/unit/services/v5-regressions.test.ts:431 builds new HistoryLoggerService({ dataDir: tempDir }) with no maxBackupFiles, so its rotation count comes from whatever the machine running the suite has configured. Reproduced: pointing XDG_CONFIG_HOME at a config containing {"historyLogging":{"keepRotatedFiles":0}} and running the suite gives
FAIL tests/unit/services/v5-regressions.test.ts
● 14. Rotated History Reading › reads entries from both operations.jsonl and rotated operations.1.jsonl
Expected: 2
Received: 1
on an otherwise green tree (1471 passed, that 1 failed). The same run on base 5117b1c is clean, so the PR introduced the dependency.
history-search.test.ts was pinned to maxBackupFiles: 0 for exactly this reason ("so the search never reads the rotation count off whatever config the machine running this suite happens to have"), which makes the unpinned siblings inconsistent rather than safe. The unpinned constructions I found: tests/unit/services/v5-regressions.test.ts:431, tests/integration/once-single-pass.test.ts:63 and :457, tests/unit/core/organize/selective-undo.test.ts:106,155,188,227,254, tests/integration/new-features-edge-cases.test.ts:32,130,133,136, tests/integration/tools/search-history.test.ts:66. Only the first currently asserts anything rotation-dependent, but each one reads the live config file on every log() and searchHistory().
Fix: pin maxBackupFiles in each of those constructions (0 is fine where the test doesn't care), same as history-search.test.ts already does. This is AGENTS.md rule 1 and rule 3 — a test whose result depends on the developer's home directory.
2. The rotation half of the feature has no test that can fail.
The new suite drives searchHistory() only. Mutating the rotation cut at src/services/history-logger.service.ts:275 from this.maxBackupFiles to a hardcoded 5 leaves the entire suite green (105 suites, 1471 passed, 1 unrelated timing flake in manifest-verification-and-lock.test.ts that passes standalone and in the clean baseline run). So "how many operations.N.jsonl survive a rotation" — the half of the feature that actually decides what is kept — is unpinned, and a regression there ships silently.
tests/unit/services/history-logger.test.ts:346 and :370 do exercise rotation, but both pass maxBackupFiles: 2 explicitly, so they take the constructor branch and never touch the getter.
Fix: add one test to history-keep-rotated.test.ts that logs past a small maxFileSizeBytes with keepRotatedFiles set (say 3) and asserts operations.3.jsonl exists while operations.4.jsonl does not. Then mutation-check it the way you did the read path.
Suggestions
3. keepRotatedFiles: 0 still rotates, and hides the result. checkRotation() renames operations.jsonl to operations.1.jsonl unconditionally; the loop above it is what the 0 suppresses. Measured with keepRotatedFiles: 0: after rotation the directory holds operations.1.jsonl + operations.jsonl with 2 entries on disk, and searchHistory() returns 1. So history the user still has becomes invisible to every read path while still occupying the directory. Nothing is deleted, so it isn't data loss, but config.schema.json:148 advertises "minimum": 0 as a supported setting.
Either make 0 mean "do not rotate" (skip the rename when the count is 0) or raise the schema minimum to 1. The first is closer to what a user typing 0 means.
4. The getter runs once per loop iteration. src/services/history-logger.service.ts:332 is for (let i = 1; i <= this.maxBackupFiles; i++), and the condition re-evaluates the getter — so a searchHistory() with keepRotatedFiles: 5 calls loadUserConfig() 6 times, i.e. 6 synchronous readFileSync + JSONC parses per history read (measured with a counting mock). checkRotation() at :275 also reads it while operations.lock is held, since appendEntry calls it inside the lock.
Worse with a typo'd value: keepRotatedFiles: 100000 makes one searchHistory({}) take 5.9s (measured). Hoisting const max = this.maxBackupFiles; before the loop at :332 fixes both the count and the bound-stability question, and makes the hot path one read instead of N+1.
5. Overlap window (agreeing with the earlier comment, adding the reachable path). Confirmed by reading src/extensions/scheduler/auto-organize.service.ts: runMissedSchedules() and triggerNow() no longer consult inFlight (the runningDirectories.has guards were deleted at the catchup and trigger sites), and start() at :100 arms the cron tasks via reloadTasks() and then awaits runMissedSchedules() at :112. noOverlap only serializes the cron task against itself, so a tick that fires while startup catchup is still scanning runs both passes over the same directory concurrently. The tests pin the unguarded behavior deliberately (tests/unit/services/auto-organize.test.ts:275, :500), so this reads as a design call — but it deserves the explicit decision the earlier comment asks for: either a gate in runOrganization before the pass, or a line in the CHANGELOG next to the "two ticks" entry saying cron-vs-catchup overlap is now accepted. Two concurrent passes also means two manifests, and a no-id undo_last_operation picks the newer one — nondeterministic on the path this PR otherwise closes.
What's good
The getter itself is the right shape: optional field, explicit constructor value wins, Number.isFinite guard with the "five"/null reasoning spelled out, Math.max(0, Math.floor()) for negatives and fractions. The read-path suite is mutation-sensitive by construction — reverting the search loop to a hardcoded 5 fails 4 of its tests, which I checked. filterByAge's "keep the undated file" reasoning is correct, and scanned being pinned as pre-filter with a test that fails on the filtered count closes a real reporting ambiguity.
Residual risk after this PR: items 1, 2 and 5. Item 2 is the one I'd fix first — it's the difference between a feature that's tested and a feature that's asserted.

Addressed the two merge-blocking findings:
The remaining findings (full_organization_flow test temp root and the 100ms cleanup delay) are test cleanups from the #108 commit already on this branch, not from the current diff. I can fix those too if you want, but they're orthogonal to this PR. |
Fifteen test constructions left `maxBackupFiles` unset, so the rotation count was read off whatever config the machine running the suite happens to have. Green here because there is no config file, red on any machine with `historyLogging.keepRotatedFiles: 0` set, and `v5-regressions` is the one that asserts a rotation-dependent count. The rotation half of the feature had nothing that could fail. The new suite seeded `operations.N.jsonl` by hand and only checked the read path, so hardcoding the cut left the whole suite green. Two tests now drive the real write: one at 3 asserts `operations.3.jsonl` exists and `operations.4.jsonl` does not, one at 0 asserts the live file is truncated rather than renamed into a backup no read opens. Both were mutation-checked against a hardcoded cut and a skipped zero branch. `checkRotation` and `searchHistory` each read the getter inside a loop, so one search parsed the user config once per candidate file, inside the history lock for the rotation. Both read it once into a local now. `full_organization_flow` derived its temp root from `tests/temp` instead of `os.tmpdir()`, and the foreign manifest it writes was stamped by `Date.now()` with no override while `listManifests` orders by that field, so two manifests landing in the same millisecond had no defined order. The manifest is now written by hand with a stamp past the organize's. Nothing user-facing changed: the hoist is the same number, and the pins fix tests, not code. Report a skipped manual trigger as skipped.
If triggerNow() runs while a pass is in flight, this return skips its pass. triggerNow() then returns true at Line 423, so its caller cannot tell that no new pass ran. Return a completion result from runOrganization() and propagate the skipped result through triggerNow().

historyLogging.keepRotatedFiles was parsed by the config schema but never read: rotation and search both used the hardcoded 5. Now maxBackupFiles is optional on HistoryLoggerConfig, and an unset value reads loadUserConfig().historyLogging.keepRotatedFiles on every use (falling back to 5 when missing/non-finite). An explicit constructor value still pins the count for callers that own their own storage.
Tests: new history-keep-rotated suite drives the read path; history-search pinned to 0 rotations.
