Review for PR #2082 — opt-in strict content masking
Verdict: NEEDS_WORK. One security finding remains before merge.
KEPT — over-broad _tokens exemption (MEASUREMENT_ENTRY_NAME @ src/lib/telemetry/attributes.ts:295-296):
The (?:^|_)tokens$ clause exempts credential-bearing entry names (access_tokens, refresh_tokens, session_tokens, auth_tokens, id_tokens). With the opt-in on, { name: "access_tokens", value: "abc.def.ghi" } leaves the value unmasked while the same value under a direct key is redacted — strict mode can be weaker than the default key rule. No author reply addressed this; the suggested narrowing and an access_tokens BT10 case are on the thread.
Resolved — numeric-value exemption (thread closed): fixed in HEAD — NUMERIC_TEXT removed, MEASUREMENT_ENTRY_NAME extended with version|length, numeric credential cases added to BT10.
Also note: this review supersedes my two earlier reviews (the 05:06 CHANGES_REQUESTED and the 06:14 COMMENTED); the current verdict stands at NEEDS_WORK.

Replace the unanchored measurement search with a linear prefix-safe check.
Do not anchor the measurement branch at ^. The exemption includes prefixed names such as cache_read_input_tokens, and the current suffix matching also supports names such as usage_input_tokens and gen_ai_usage_input_tokens. Anchoring would mask these entries in strict mode.
The current branch retries from each underscore and can re-run its repeated segment group for each position on a long failing name. This creates superlinear synchronous work before the span-content size cap runs. Use a segment scan to preserve prefixed names with linear work.

NEEDS_WORK — changes requested
This review reflects the current verdict on PR #2082 and updates the review state to changes requested to match the standing NEEDS_WORK in the summary comment. It supersedes my earlier COMMENTED review on this PR so the decision is not dropped; no new findings are added here.
One open finding blocks merge:
| Severity | File:line | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| MAJOR | src/lib/telemetry/attributes.ts:295-296 |
The broad `/(?:^ |
The earlier numeric-value exemption finding is resolved and its thread closed. The CodeRabbit ReDoS/linear-scan note at attributes.ts:301 is a separate bot finding, not part of this verdict.
Awaiting the author's fix of the _tokens exemption.
…keys in span content
The span content masker is back to the released rules, which read keys and
text only. Operators who would rather keep the stricter masking that was
briefly shipped can now ask for it: NEUROLINK_MASK_CREDENTIAL_ENTRIES=true.
With it set, prompts and tool inputs and outputs also have
- the value of a { name, value } or { key, value } entry whose name is a
credential masked (headers, environment lists, form fields). Only the name
decides, as it does for the same credential under a key, so a numeric PIN is
masked and so are access_tokens, refresh_tokens, id_tokens and the like. Not
masked are settings: names ending in policy, type, algorithm, count, limit,
version or length, a bare tokens, and the count-like token names of a model
(max_tokens, prompt_tokens, cache_read_input_tokens, ...);
- a credential inside an object key masked, the rest of the key kept.
Unset, or set to anything but "true" (any casing, padded), the output is
exactly the released output. The variable is read when content is masked, not
at import, and once per masking call rather than per node. An entry's name is
classified by a linear scan of its segments, not a pattern: a key can come from
content and a nested-repetition pattern took 4 s on an 80 KB key and 14 s on a
160 KB one.
Tests: adv-exporter A14 (11 checks: set to true masks an entry, a numeric
credential in an entry, an access_tokens entry and an object key; entries and
keys that name no credential are unchanged; unset, empty, false, 1, yes and on
leave the released rules) and adv-providers BT10 (18 non-credential and 19
credential entries with the opt-in on, the same 19 recorded as released with
it off, and a 160 KB entry name that must be classified in under two seconds).
Mutations on the masker, as failing checks in adv-exporter and adv-providers:
switch disabled, 4 and 18; a numeric-value exemption put back, 1 and 3; a
broad "ends in tokens" exemption put back, 1 and 5; the pattern put back, 0 and
1. The released-behaviour checks delete the
variable at start so a shell that sets it cannot change them, and the other
masking suites pass with it set.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.Fix the single-segment branch and the order of the measurement check.
isMeasurementEntryNamecallssnakeCased(name)and then branches onsegments.length === 1. A name such asmaxTokensbecomesmax_tokens, so the camel-case case works. A name such asTokensbecomestokens, so that case also works. The single-segment branch returnsfalseforlimit, count, versionand similar one-word names. This is correct, becausecredentialEntryNameonly calls this check afterisSensitiveKeyaccepts the name. One gap remains. A name such as
cache_read_input_tokenshassegments[0] === "cache", so the check passes. A name such asusage_input_tokensorgen_ai_usage_input_tokenshas a first segment outsideTOKEN_COUNT_PREFIXES. Strict mode then masks the value of a pure usage entry. The failure is safe and masks more than needed. It does not leak a credential. The same rule applies to names like
access_tokens. Their first segment isaccess, so they are correctly not exempt. No change is required for security. Add a prefix such as
usagetoTOKEN_COUNT_PREFIXESonly if these usage names appear in real{ name, value }entries.test/continuous-test-suite-observability-adv-providers.ts: 1

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.Remove the wall-clock threshold from the linear-time check.
The test asserts
elapsedMs < 2_000. The assertion can fail on a slow or loaded CI runner even when the code is linear. It also runs the 160 KB name throughspanContentAttribute, which includes redaction, stringify and size capping, not only the name check. The leak assertion on line 2271 is stable. Keep it. Raise the time limit, or compare against the time of a short name, to reduce flakiness.

APPROVE
This review brings PR #2082 to approved, matching the APPROVE verdict in the summary comment.
Both findings raised across the review are resolved in HEAD (94ee3b15):
| Severity | Finding | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| MAJOR | Over-broad _tokens exemption left access_tokens/refresh_tokens/session_tokens/auth_tokens/id_tokens unmasked as entries |
TOKEN_COUNT_PREFIXES gates the exemption; access, refresh, etc. are not in the prefix set, so those names are masked. access_tokens/refresh_tokens/session_tokens/auth_tokens/id_tokens cases added to CREDENTIAL_ENTRIES (BT10). |
| MAJOR | Numeric credential values bypassed the opt-in case guard | NUMERIC_TEXT removed; numeric password/key/pin cases covered in BT10; `version |
The separate CodeRabbit ReDoS/linear-scan note was also addressed via the isMeasurementEntryName segment scan. No open findings remain. Supersedes the earlier COMMENTED / CHANGES_REQUESTED reviews.

Description
What does this PR do?
Adds
NEUROLINK_MASK_CREDENTIAL_ENTRIES, an opt-in that brings back the stricter content masking that #2066 (#2066) briefly shipped and #2081 (#2081) took out. The default is unchanged: the masker reads keys and text only, as in the released build. The audit of #2081 suggested the toggle for operators who want the extra masking, and the maintainer asked for it.Related Issues
