Definition of a peer-reviewed formalization

This document outlines the definition of a peer-reviewed formalisation. We propose this definition for the Lean proof assistant, but we hold the same principles to be equally applicable to projects using other proof assistants.

Importantly, the peer-review of a paper describing a formalisation does not necessarily consitute the peer-review of the formalisation itself.

The definition

Within the context of Lean, a peer-reviewed formalisation is Lean code which has been deemed satisfactory by one or more independent named (directly or by association with an established body) Lean experts in the following areas: 

  1. Reusability: Whether the code is designed in a way that makes it easy for subsequent projects to build upon.
  2. Organisation: For example, if theorems and definitions appear in natural places within the file / directory structure. 
  3. Readability: How easy the code is to read by a Lean expert.
  4. Accuracy: For example, if the code represents the the results it is claimed to.
  5. Proof structure: Whether the proof structure is easy to follow, concise and where appropriate is split into lemmas of manageable size.
  6. Generality: For example, if the results are at an appropriate level of generality for the task at hand. 
  7. Motivation of formulations: The motivation for a particular formulation of a result is well thought-through and where appropriate other experts consulted. 
  8. Integration: An appropriate level of effort has been put in to integrate the results into existing libraries where appropriate and to avoid duplicating existing work.
  9. Citations: The appropriate citations are included within the formalisation to other works (formal and informal) that are used.
  10. Attribution: The appropriate contributors are attributed to the project.

Tips to getting to a peer-reviewed formalization

There are two parts of the peer-review process you should consider when preparing your formalisation.

First, the peer-review process requires an independent reviewer to put their name, or the name of their organisation behind your formalisation. Because of this, your formalisation should uphold strong principles of ethics, fairness, and academic integrity. You should avoid placing a reviewer in a position where endorsing your formalisation could be seen as professionally questionable. Examples of ethical risks include:

  • Building directly on recent work without consulting the authors thereof (scooping).
  • Failing to properly attribute foundational ideas or contributions.
  • Misrepresenting prior work.

Second, beyond avoiding ethical issues, there are a number of practical steps you can take to help make your formalisation easier to review and more likely to receive a favourable assessment. These steps concern the conduct of the formalisation process and your engagement with the community:

  • Submit your code in small reasonable pull-requests to existing libraries which uphold the peer-review standards above.
  • Communicate publicly with others in the Lean community during the process of your formalization, as they may have other ideas about the form of the results, structure etc.
  • Make sure you understand, can read, and can answer questions about your formalization. If you can't, it is unlikely that a reviewer can, and it is unlikely to have a favorable peer-review.
  • Be patient. As with the traditional peer-review system reviewing can take a long time, it's part of the process.
  • Try and identify others working on the same thing or in the same direction, and consider discussing and collaborating with them.
