Complexity Representation Pilot

This repository contains the data pipeline, analysis code, slides, and paper sources for the pilot study on complexity, representation, and riskless mirrors. The project studies whether light cue manipulations shift valuation behavior in lottery and mirror tasks in the spirit of Bordalo et al., using Oprea's mirror framework as the main benchmark.

The repository follows a modular research workflow:

  • 0_raw/: raw survey exports and other source files.
  • 1_data/: cleaning and harmonization code that turns raw survey files into analysis-ready datasets.
  • 2_analysis/: tables, figures, scalars, and benchmark comparisons used in the paper and slides.
  • 3_slides/: presentation sources and compiled slide outputs.
  • 4_paper/: manuscript sources and compiled paper output.
  • externals/, lib/, utils/: shared scripts, helpers, and external inputs used by the template.

Project workflow

The standard order is:

  1. Build cleaned data in 1_data/.
  2. Build analysis outputs in 2_analysis/.
  3. Rebuild slides in 3_slides/ if needed.
  4. Rebuild the paper in 4_paper/.

From the repository root, run:

bash run_all.sh

If you only want to rebuild one stage, run its module script directly:

bash 1_data/make.sh
bash 2_analysis/make.sh
bash 3_slides/make.sh
bash 4_paper/make.sh

Setup

This project inherits its environment and build structure from the Gentzkow Lab research template, with additional modifications for this project. The main dependencies are:

  • micromamba for environment management
  • tectonic or pdflatex/bibtex for LaTeX compilation

To set up the repository on a new machine:

bash setup.sh

Then restart the shell and rebuild the modules you need.

Key outputs

Important generated outputs include:

  • cleaned survey and timing files in 1_data/output/
  • analysis tables, figures, and scalars in 2_analysis/output/
  • manuscript PDF in 4_paper/output/paper.pdf

The paper module pulls figures, tables, and scalar definitions from 2_analysis/output/, so 2_analysis/ should generally be rebuilt before 4_paper/.
