Category: Build time performance improvement
I'm a software engineer on Microsoft's Visual C++ team and we'd like to
contribute a significant build-performance improvement for the libmodem project.
We are contributing these changes in the public domain.
And we identified an opportunity by building and analyzing libmodem projects.
We found that these changes improve the iterative build time by roughly
62.55%, saving over 7 seconds of build time (on my local machine).
The following measurements were taking on a Windows machine.
The build of the entire solution was executed 5 times with and without
the changes resulted in the following numbers:
Without the changes:
1: 11.383
2: 10.778
3: 11.446
4: 10.778
5: 11.356
Avg: 11.1482
With the changes:
1: 4.08
2: 4.065
3: 4.036
4: 4.018
5: 4.174
Avg: 4.174
To make the measurements, we've used the Build Insights tool in
Visual Studio.
