Dominique Devereaux Portfolio Banner

Independent game development as creative and organizational practice.

This repository is the public portfolio and development workspace for Dominique Devereaux and Loptr Lab.

The work brings together game development, systems design, narrative world-building, accessibility, technology, and independent studio production.

It also serves as a public practice archive: not only showing what gets built, but documenting the decisions, structures, experiments, and ideas that shape the work.

Research & Practice

Leading the Build

Organizational Leadership and Narrative World-Building in Independent Game Studio Production

Primary research question:

How do leadership and production structures in small, founder-led independent game studios shape β€” and get shaped by β€” the narrative worlds they build?

The proposed practice-research programme uses Loptr Lab as its primary longitudinal practice site.

The research investigates the relationship between:

  • founder-led leadership;
  • production structures;
  • narrative and world-building;
  • game systems and mechanics;
  • accessibility;
  • knowledge transfer; and
  • the changing conditions of independent production.

One proposition under investigation is:

The game world can function as organizational infrastructure.

Lore can become shared vocabulary. Factions can become conceptual models. Mission structures can encode priorities. Narrative principles can become creative constraints. The identity of a fictional world can become connected to the identity of the studio that builds it.

This repository provides part of the evidence base for investigating those relationships.

Practice Infrastructure

The projects below are treated as connected parts of an evolving studio practice rather than isolated portfolio pieces.

Veiled Dominion

Primary creative case

Veiled Dominion Engine

An open prototype for a four-player chess variant organized around restraint rather than conquest.

The project brings together game mechanics, narrative principles, systems architecture, accessibility, and production decisions.

Duet

Accessibility artifact

Duet: Solo

A screen-reader-first accessibility-built chess variant developed for the Build with Gemini XPRIZE.

The project explores accessibility as a systems and architectural constraint rather than something added after the core interaction has been designed.

Returning to the Void

Longitudinal creative practice

Project journey

A long-running creative thread extending back to 2016.

Its value to the wider practice is longitudinal: it provides evidence of how creative work, technologies, production methods, and priorities evolve across time.

Training

Knowledge-transfer experiment

Training repository

A structured pathway for introducing contributors to production roles including:

  • Prototype Engineering
  • Systems Design
  • Technical Art

The project explores how a small studio can make its production architecture, expectations, and shared vocabulary more legible to new contributors.

Evidence

The practice is documented across several connected public surfaces.

Surface Role
Loptr Lab Studio repositories and production evidence
PIXIE Reflective writing, field notes, systems thinking, and development research
Personal GitHub Prototypes, experiments, and technical practice
Portfolio Public-facing synthesis
Research Formal statement of the proposed research programme

Together, these form a distributed practice archive.

The purpose is to preserve not only finished artifacts, but also the reasoning and development context around them.

Research Method

The proposed research follows a longitudinal practice-research approach.

Practice

Ongoing Loptr Lab production provides the primary site of inquiry.

Archive

Repositories, design documents, production records, version histories, prototypes, pitch materials, and public development writing provide evidence.

Reflection

Significant creative, technical, leadership, and production decisions are documented and examined reflexively.

Comparison

Approximately two to three independent or founder-led studios may provide comparative cases, selected using explicit criteria and appropriate public or interview evidence.

Analysis

Practice and comparative evidence will be considered alongside literature on organizational leadership, creative industries, independent game production, narrative/world-building, accessibility, and practice research.

The working analytical loop is:

Contribution Under Investigation

The research is intended to explore possible contributions across four connected areas:

Organizational leadership
Founder-led leadership under the particular constraints and opportunities of independent game production.

Creative practice
How organizational decisions become embedded in narrative, mechanics, world-building, and systems β€” and how those creative structures can subsequently influence organizational decisions.

Practice research
How longitudinal independent studio practice can function as a sustained site of doctoral inquiry when creative artifacts are combined with reflexive, comparative, and documentary evidence.

Industry practice
Potential frameworks for independent founders around organizational structure, creative identity, production sustainability, knowledge transfer, and intellectual property.

These are research directions, not predetermined findings.

Authorship & AI-Assisted Production

The fiction, characters, and core worldview behind Veiled Dominion and related projects are my own.

AI tools may be used as production and editorial assistance for activities such as documentation, debugging, structuring, exploration, and technical iteration.

Where relevant, project documentation identifies the role of AI assistance and distinguishes tool use from authorship of the underlying creative concepts.

The portfolio is intentionally split between:

  • index.html β€” public-facing practice portfolio
  • research/index.html β€” detailed research programme
  • README.md β€” concise repository and practice-research context

The three layers are designed to reinforce one another without simply repeating the same document.

Status

Proposed practice-research programme

The portfolio and studio archive are active and evolving.

The research framing will continue to develop through practice, documentation, comparative investigation, and formal academic discussion.
