fix(github): cancel device sign-in and report its denied, expired, failed and timed-out outcomes - #200
Split out of #159 and rebased on current main (c5731f4): fixes 8, 9 and 10 of #159, unchanged in substance. Small and independent; it does not depend on the other parts of #159.
All three fixes are about the GitHub device sign-in in Settings → Plugins: a started sign-in has to be cancellable, and every way it can end (approved, denied, expired, failed, cancelled) has to be reported instead of ending silently or staying "pending". Three commits, one per fix, plus three review-fix commits on top (sections 4 to 6). GithubAuthService is unchanged on main since #159 was opened, so the service changes apply as they were.
1. A started GitHub sign-in could not be cancelled; failures were silent or showed raw IPC errors
fix(github): cancel device sign-in and report denied, expired and failed outcomes
Problem
A started device sign-in could not be cancelled.
It retried every poll failure until the code expired.
It ended silently when GitHub answered "access denied" or "expired".
A sign-in that could not start showed Error invoking remote method 'github-auth:start': ... at the top of Settings → Plugins, in English also in the Russian UI.
Cause
There was no cancel path. Every poll error was treated as retryable, terminal OAuth answers (access_denied, expired_token) were ignored, and the renderer showed the raw IPC error.
Fix
GithubAuthService.cancelDeviceFlow() is public and exposed through the existing github-auth IPC (main renderer only) and preload; Settings shows a Cancel button next to the pending code.
status() reports deviceFlowState: idle, pending, denied, expired, failed or cancelled. Settings shows a localized status line (en, ru) with existing classes: denied, expired and failed use the Settings error style, cancelled is a plain status line.
access_denied, expired_token, unknown provider errors and non-transient HTTP errors stop polling with that outcome; OAuth error bodies on HTTP 400 are read as well.
Network errors, timeouts, HTTP 408/429/5xx and unreadable bodies back off and retry, but five failures in a row end the flow as failed. slow_down keeps adding five seconds to every later poll. The host clock ends the flow as expired even if GitHub keeps answering authorization_pending.
A start or cancel failure shows a localized line ("not configured" for a build without an OAuth client); the raw error goes to the log only.
The new lines live in PluginSettingsSection (the lazily loaded Settings chunk), not in the startup string table. tests/renderer-bundle-splitting.test.mjs gets a second test that checks this text is bundled with PluginSettingsSection and absent from every chunk App.js loads at startup; it reuses the existing in-memory production bundle (built once for both tests), so the maintainer's first test is unchanged apart from reading metafile from the shared result.
Test
tests/github-auth.test.mjs, tests/github-auth-integration.test.mjs, new tests/github-signin-errors-ui.test.mjs, tests/renderer-bundle-splitting.test.mjs. All GitHub answers come from a fake fetcher; nothing contacts GitHub. On main without the fix, 14 of these tests fail (cancel, outcomes, back-off, host-clock expiry, the localized UI lines, the bundle text check).
2. A timed-out profile request left the sign-in "pending" forever
fix(github): report a timed-out profile request as a failed sign-in
Problem
When GitHub issued the token but the /user request then hit the request timeout, the poll stopped silently, the flow was cleared, the status stayed "pending", and Cancel did nothing.
Cause
The timeout's AbortError was taken for a cancellation.
Fix
Only this flow's own abort counts as a cancellation. A timed-out profile request ends the sign-in as failed.
Test
tests/github-auth.test.mjs: "a profile request that times out after the token arrived reports a failed sign-in, not a stuck pending one". It fails without the fix and passes with it.
3. A 429/5xx with an OAuth error body ended the sign-in after one answer
fix(github): retry HTTP 429/5xx token answers that carry an OAuth error body
Problem
A transient 429 or 5xx from the token endpoint with a JSON body such as {"error":"temporarily_unavailable"} ended the sign-in as an unknown provider error after one answer.
Cause
The OAuth error body was read before the transient-status check, so these answers skipped the retry.
Fix
These statuses are retried with back-off whatever the body says. slow_down keeps its own handling.
Test
tests/github-auth.test.mjs: "HTTP 429 and 5xx answers with an OAuth error body are retried like other transient answers". It fails without the fix and passes with it.
4. A 429/5xx whose body never finished kept the sign-in pending past every deadline (review)
fix(github): bound OAuth response bodies by the request timeout, cancel and code lifetime
Problem
With fix 3 the token answer's body is read on every status. If a 429/5xx arrived with headers but a body that never finished, the poll waited on that read forever: the sign-in stayed "pending" past the request timeout and past the code's lifetime, and Cancel did not end the read.
Cause
request() cleared its timeout and dropped the flow's abort listener as soon as the Response arrived, so nothing bounded the body read that followed.
Fix
request() now takes a reader and reads the body inside the same window: the request timeout, the flow's abort (Cancel, sign-out, a new sign-in) and, while polling, the code's remaining lifetime all end the read, even for a fetcher that ignores its signal. A cut-off read counts as a transient failure, so the poll backs off and tries again, or ends as expired once the code's lifetime is over. The device-code, refresh and profile requests read their bodies the same way.
Test
tests/github-auth.test.mjs: "a 429/5xx answer whose body never finishes is cut off by the request timeout and polled again" and "a 503 answer whose body never finishes cannot outlive the device code or a cancel". Both fail on the branch before this commit (the flow stays pending) and pass with it.
5. Cancel disappeared after switching Settings sections (review)
fix(github): keep Cancel for a pending sign-in after Settings remounts
Problem
Switching to another Settings section and back remounts the plugin section. The displayed code was dropped, the host flow kept running, and Cancel only existed next to that code, so the pending sign-in could no longer be cancelled.
Fix
The section reads a pending flow from the host status (deviceFlowState: "pending"). Without the code it shows a localized line (en, ru) that the sign-in waits for approval in the browser, a Cancel button, and keeps reading the status until the flow ends. The sign-in buttons stay available to start again with a new code.
Test
tests/github-signin-errors-ui.test.mjs: "a sign-in still pending in the host after the section remounts keeps its Cancel action". It fails before this commit and passes with it.
6. An expired code stayed on screen while the status read failed (review)
fix(github): expire a displayed sign-in code even when the status read fails
Problem
The Settings poll checked the displayed code's deadline only after a successful status read. While reads failed, an expired code stayed on screen with no notice.
Fix
A failed read still applies the deadline: past it, the code is cleared and the expired notice is shown; before it, the read is retried as before.
Test
tests/github-signin-errors-ui.test.mjs: "a displayed code past its deadline shows the expired notice even when the status read fails". It fails before this commit and passes with it.
Verification
Each fix's tests were run against the source just before that fix: they fail there (14, 1, 1, 2, 1 and 1 failing tests) and pass with it.
npm run build (typecheck) and npm run audit:secrets pass.
The renderer changes stay in PluginSettingsSection (the lazily loaded Settings chunk); tests/renderer-bundle-splitting.test.mjs passes, so the new text is absent from the startup bundle.
Full test suite: 2717 tests, 2711 pass, 0 fail, 6 skipped (18 new tests). Main at c5731f4: 2699 tests, 2693 pass, 0 fail, 6 skipped.
Nothing contacts GitHub: every answer comes from a fake fetcher or a fake githubAuth bridge.
Because this changes the sign-in controls, the owner should try the flow before merge: start a sign-in, switch to another Settings section and back, and use Cancel.
…led outcomes
A started GitHub device sign-in could not be cancelled, retried poll
failures until the code expired, and ended silently when GitHub answered
access_denied or expired_token. A sign-in that could not start showed
the raw IPC error ("Error invoking remote method 'github-auth:start':
...") at the top of the Plugins page, in English in the Russian UI.
- GithubAuthService.cancelDeviceFlow() is public and exposed through the
existing github-auth IPC (main-renderer only) and preload.
- status() reports deviceFlowState: idle, pending, denied, expired,
failed or cancelled.
- access_denied, expired_token, unknown provider errors and non-transient
HTTP errors stop polling with that outcome; OAuth error bodies on HTTP
400 are read as well.

off and retry, but five failures in a row end the flow as failed.
- slow_down keeps adding five seconds to every later poll.

authorization_pending.
- Settings shows a Cancel button next to the pending code and a localized
status line (en, ru) for the outcome, using existing classes: denied,
expired and failed use the Settings error style, cancelled is a plain
status line. A start or cancel failure shows a localized line ("not
configured" for a build without an OAuth client); the details go to
the log.
The new sign-in lines live in PluginSettingsSection (the lazily loaded
Settings chunk), not in the startup string table; renderer-bundle-splitting
checks they stay out of the startup bundle.
When GitHub returned a token but the /user request hit the request timeout,
the timeout's AbortError was taken for a cancellation: the poll stopped
silently, the flow was cleared and the status stayed "pending", so Cancel
did nothing. Only this flow's own abort now counts as a cancellation; a
timed-out profile request ends the sign-in as failed.
…or body
A transient 429/5xx from the token endpoint with a JSON body such as
{"error":"temporarily_unavailable"} skipped the transient-status check and
ended the sign-in as an unknown provider error after one answer. These
statuses are now retried with backoff whatever the body says; slow_down
keeps its own handling.

Bound error-body reads before handling retryable responses
If GitHub or a proxy returns 429/5xx headers but leaves the body unfinished, this newly unconditional read blocks the transient-status handling. request() clears its timeout and removes the flow-abort listener when it returns the Response, so neither bounds the subsequent JSON read, and the host-clock expiry check cannot run while it is awaiting the body. Reproduced with a local HTTP 503 server: the parent retries and finishes, whereas this commit remains pending past both configured deadlines. Keep timeout coverage through body consumption or otherwise bound the error-body read before deciding whether to retry.

Fixed in fix(github): bound OAuth response bodies by the request timeout, cancel and code lifetime. request() now reads the body inside the same window as the request: the request timeout, the flow's abort and, while polling, the code's remaining lifetime all end the read, also for a fetcher that ignores its signal. A cut-off read is a transient failure, so the poll backs off and retries, or ends as expired once the code's lifetime is over. The device-code, refresh and profile requests read their bodies the same way. Tests in tests/github-auth.test.mjs: "a 429/5xx answer whose body never finishes is cut off by the request timeout and polled again" (429 and 503, next poll signs in) and "a 503 answer whose body never finishes cannot outlive the device code or a cancel" (ends as expired with an hour-long request timeout; Cancel aborts the request still reading its body). Both fail before the commit and pass with it.

Keep Cancel available after switching Settings sections
If a user starts sign-in, visits another Settings section, and returns, SettingsPanel.tsx:1533 unmounts and remounts this component. githubCode is consequently reset to null, even though the mount-time status read reports deviceFlowState: "pending". Because the new Cancel button is inside the githubCode branch, there is then no cancellation action for that still-running flow without starting another sign-in. Retain the active flow across remounts or render a cancellation action from the service's pending state.

Walkthrough
The GitHub device flow now reports explicit outcomes, retries transient polling failures, and supports cancellation from the settings UI. The pull request also adds authentication, UI, IPC, and renderer-bundle tests.
Changes: GitHub Device Flow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Device-flow status and polling src/shared/contracts.ts, src/main/services/GithubAuthService.ts, tests/github-auth.test.mjs
The auth status includes a device-flow state. Polling retries transient failures with backoff, and the service reports denied, failed, or expired outcomes. Tests cover retries, terminal responses, expiration, cancellation, and profile timeouts.
Cancellation and renderer outcomes src/main/ipc/registerIpc.ts, src/preload/index.ts, src/shared/contracts.ts, src/renderer/src/features/plugins/PluginSettingsSection.tsx, tests/github-auth-integration.test.mjs, tests/github-signin-errors-ui.test.mjs
The renderer can cancel a pending flow through preload and IPC. The settings UI refreshes status, clears the active flow, and displays localized outcome notices. Tests cover cancellation wiring and UI states.
The bundle test helper returns generated output files. A new assertion checks that Settings-only strings occur in chunks containing their source module and not in chunks statically reachable from App.js.
howdeploy/CanvasTTY#22: The issue describes the same Settings device-flow path and requests actionable cancellation, denial, network, and rate-limit outcomes. This pull request adds those flow outcomes and localized UI messages.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 0cc80
No outstanding code issue was established for this change. The owner should still try and approve the sign-in flow as requested before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 0cc80
The change is bounded to GitHub sign-in and retains trusted-window checks and credential protections. No introduced security defect was established in the inspected paths. Assurance remains limited by incomplete broader security and runtime coverage.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new cancellation authority is limited to the current pending GitHub flow in this service instance. It accepts no target identifier and does not clear an already completed session; signing out remains a separate operation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new cancellation handler uses the same authority check as existing authentication operations. The check requires the live main window's exact WebContents and main frame, rejecting other windows and subframes. This predicate is unchanged from the PR base.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Existing persistence protections are retained: writes are serialized, require available secure-storage encryption, use a restricted temporary file, recheck credential identity and generation before rename, and clean up the temporary file. Sign-out invalidates the generation and queues removal of the stored session.

@BIackFIame CI is green at ce7f4a4, but the existing inline findings remain merge blockers:
Keep timeout/cancellation coverage through response-body consumption; a 429/5xx response with an unfinished body can otherwise stay pending beyond the deadlines.
Keep Cancel available after the Settings section unmounts/remounts while the host flow is still pending.
Please also address CodeRabbit's expired-code handling finding when reading status fails.
Please add regressions for these paths and rebase onto current main. Because this changes sign-in controls and behavior, the owner must try and approve the resulting flow before merge.
…el and code lifetime
A token answer whose headers arrived but whose body never finished (for
example a 429/5xx from a proxy) was read after request() had already
cleared its timeout and dropped the flow's abort listener, so the poll
stayed pending past every deadline. request() now reads the body inside
the same window: the request timeout, the flow's cancel and, while
polling, the device code's remaining lifetime all end the read.
Switching Settings sections remounts the plugin section, which dropped
the displayed device code while the host flow kept running, and Cancel
lived only next to that code. The section now reads a pending flow from
the host status: without the code it shows that the sign-in waits for
approval, offers Cancel, and keeps reading the status until the flow
ends.
…d fails
The Settings poll checked the code's deadline only after a successful
host status read, so while reads failed an expired code stayed on screen
with no notice. A failed read now still applies the deadline: past it,
the code is cleared and the expired notice is shown; before it, the read
is retried as before.
Timeout and cancellation through body consumption: done, see 4437477858. A 429/5xx with an unfinished body is now bounded by the request timeout, Cancel and the code's lifetime, with two regression tests.
Cancel after Settings unmount/remount: done, see 4437477860. Cancel is derived from the host's pending state, with a regression test.
CodeRabbit's expired-code finding: done, see 4439554270, with a regression test.
Rebased onto current main (c5731f4); the original three commits are unchanged, the review fixes are three new commits on top.

Ready for the owner to try: start a sign-in, switch to another Settings section and back, then Cancel; and let a code expire.
I'm on vacation for about a month and will be mostly unavailable until then, so my replies will be slow. The branch is rebased on current main and the review fixes above are ready for review.
