fix(ui): say what HOME limits and plugin service errors mean - #199
Split out of #159 and rebased on current main (c5731f4): fixes 14 and 15 of #159, unchanged in substance; where main's newer code required it, the change is adapted to it, as noted below. Small and independent; it does not depend on the other parts of #159.
Two UI messages that misled: a HOME limit row that read as the opposite of what it meant, and a plugin page error that named neither the reason nor the setting. One commit per fix, then two review commits: a test fix for Windows (3), and a separate presentation change for the owner to look at (4).
1. HOME's model-limit rows showed a bare "9%", which read as 9% left
fix(ui): say what is used and what is left in HOME limit rows
Problem
HOME → Model limits showed the used share of a window as a large bare "9%" with a bar and the reset countdown. "Used" was only in the hover / screen-reader text. Codex's own status line shows "% left", so 9% used read as 9% left. Usage history's latest observation (the "Latest observation" value and the "No observations in this period" note) also showed a bare percent. To reproduce, spend a little of a Codex or Claude window and open HOME.
Cause
The row rendered only the number. The data is right: Codex app-server usedPercent and Claude utilization are the used share.
Fix
The row reads "9% used · 91% left" (ru «9% использовано · осталось 91%»), and so does the hover / screen-reader line. Usage history uses one helper, quotaShareText, for both of its texts. Two i18n keys (limitUsedPercent, limitLeftPercent, ru/en) and three CSS rules that keep the countdown on the right and let the share text shorten with an ellipsis in a narrow row. Nothing else on HOME changes; the Settings link that main added to rows without data is untouched.
Test
tests/quota-used-left-labels.test.mjs: Codex and Claude fixture payloads keep 9% spent as usedPercent 9; the real HOME LimitRow, rendered without Electron in ru and en, shows used and left in the row and in its hover line; usage history's templates have no bare percent left. On c5731f4 without the HOME change, the four row tests fail (the visible row has no "used"/"left"); with it, all 6 pass.
2. A plugin page whose native code or module was off only got "Plugin service is not running."
fix(plugins): say when a plugin's native code or module is off, with a way to the setting
Problem
When a plugin page asked its own service and the person had not trusted the plugin's native code, or had turned off the module that runs the service, the page and the host notice only said "Plugin service is not running." (in English, also in the Russian UI). Nothing said why or where to change it. A trusted service that had crashed gave the same text without its error. To reproduce, install a plugin with a service and a page (for example examples/plugins/service-echo), leave its native code off and open the page.
Cause
PluginManager.assertService checked only that the service is in the active manifest, so every such request reached the supervisor, which knows only "not running".
Fix
The host now refuses those requests with a fixed text: native code not trusted, or the service's module off (src/shared/pluginServiceNotice.ts). The trust check is the same one trustedServiceSpecs uses to decide which services run.
The plugin frame shows it localized (ru/en), and the host notice carries an Open settings button that opens Settings → Agents → Extension native code (or Settings → Plugins for a module). It uses the settings destination HOME's links already use (SettingsDestination with a label): the Extension native code group gets the same data-setting-label anchor as other setting groups, so it is scrolled to and highlighted the same way. A notice with a button stays 8 s instead of 2.6 s and takes clicks only while it has one; other notices are unchanged.
A trusted service that crashed, failed to start or waits to restart keeps the generic text, followed by its last error.
The request still fails as before; nothing is trusted or turned on by the notice.
Test
tests/plugin-service-notice.test.mjs: through the real PluginManager and PluginServiceSupervisor with the service-echo example, native code off and module off give their texts and settings sections, in ru and en; a crashed trusted service keeps the generic text with its last error and no settings notice; the toast shows the button only when it has one; the frame, App and the native-code settings group are wired to it. On c5731f4 without the fix (only the new notice texts in place), all 5 tests fail; with it, all 5 pass.
3. Review: the wiring test failed on a Windows checkout
test(plugins): check the service notice wiring the same way on a CRLF checkout
tests/plugin-service-notice.test.mjs matched registerIpc.ts with a literal \n between plugins.assertService(...) and pluginServices.request, so the Windows job (core.autocrlf=true, CRLF sources) failed there. It now matches any whitespace, and the same wiring checks also run on CRLF copies of the four source files, so the test fails on macOS/Linux too if an LF-only pattern comes back. The other source and CSS assertions in this PR's tests are single-line or normalize line endings. Test only; no product change.
4. Review: presentation change for the owner to inspect (can be dropped on its own)
fix(ui): keep limit labels readable in a compact widget and announce service notices politely
This commit changes only how things look and are announced, so it is kept apart from the fixes above as asked; the PR works without it, and it can be dropped without touching commits 1 to 3.
Narrow limits tile. With the row text from fix 1, a limits tile two to four grid columns wide cut off "used · 91% left" (and the longer Russian text) behind the countdown; measured in a headless browser at 2, 3 and 4 columns, en and ru, with 3 and 4 providers. In a tile up to four columns wide (a limits-list container query, ≤ 440 px), the countdown stays beside the percentage and the used/left text gets its own line below them, wrapping at its spaces; the icon (30 px) and side padding are smaller. A row too short for two text lines (a two-row-tall tile with three providers, in Russian) shortens the text as before, with the full text on hover. The rail can no longer be pushed out of the row, which also fixes four providers in a two-row-tall tile, where main already pushed it out. Tiles five columns and wider, including the default seven, look as before. A one-column tile has no room for the numbers on main either and is unchanged in that respect. The UI contract (en/ru/zh-CN) says how a narrow limits tile reads.
Toast announcement. The toast had role="alert" only while it had an "Open settings" button, which interrupts a screen reader for a routine notice. It is now a polite role="status" region that stays mounted (so the first notice is announced too); other toasts, which had no role, are now announced politely as well.
To look at it: HOME → Edit HOME, resize the limits tile to two or three columns, in English and Russian; and open a plugin page whose native code is off to see the notice with Open settings.
Tests: tests/quota-used-left-labels.test.mjs checks the narrow layout's rules (own wrapping line for the text, rail kept in the row); tests/plugin-service-notice.test.mjs checks the toast is a mounted role="status" region with and without its button and never role="alert". Both fail on the commit before and pass with it.
Verification
npm run build (includes typecheck) and npm run audit:secrets: pass.
tests/renderer-bundle-splitting.test.mjs passes. Its own measurement of code statically reachable from App.js: 1,052,765 bytes, against 1,050,530 on main c5731f4 (+2,235), under its 1,100,000 budget. The added lines are what HOME and the canvas notice show, so they belong in the startup bundle; no Settings-only text is added (the native-code anchor reuses the existing pluginNativeCode label), and PluginServicesSettings stays in the lazy Settings chunk.
Full suite (macOS arm64, throw-away HOME/XDG/CLI homes): 2,711 tests, 2,705 pass, 0 fail, 6 skipped; main c5731f4 is 2,699 / 2,693 / 0 / 6, and the 12 added tests are the new ones above.
The HOME limit row showed the used share as a bare "9%" with a bar and a
reset countdown; "used" was only in the hover/screen-reader text. Codex's own
status line shows "% left", so 9 % used read as 9 % left. The row now says
"9% used · 91% left" (ru «9% использовано · осталось 91%»), and the
hover/screen-reader line "9% used · 91% left" («использовано 9% · осталось
91%»). Usage history's latest observation says the same instead of a bare
percent.
The normalizers were right: Codex app-server usedPercent and Claude
utilization are the used share; a test pins both with fixture payloads.
…a way to the setting
A plugin page whose service could not run because the person had not trusted
its native code (or had its module turned off) only got "Plugin service is not
running.". The host now refuses those requests with a fixed text; frames show
it localized (ru/en), and the host notice carries an Open settings button that
opens Settings -> Agents -> Extension native code (or Settings -> Plugins for a
module). A trusted service that crashed or failed keeps the generic text, now
followed by its last error.
The change adds plugin-service error classification, localized notices, and settings actions. It also updates HOME and usage-history displays to show used and remaining quota percentages.

Summary
Service checks and notice definitions src/shared/pluginServiceNotice.ts, src/main/services/PluginManager.ts, src/main/services/PluginServiceSupervisor.ts, tests/plugin-service-notice.test.mjs
Service checks distinguish disabled modules and untrusted native code. Shared helpers classify and localize these notices. Supervisor rejections include a recorded last error when present. Tests cover service checks and crash errors.
HOME limit rows and usage-history text display used and remaining percentages. Localized formatting clamps usage-history values to the 0–100 range. Tests cover both locales and rendered labels. The UI contracts describe quota text layout.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3f91f
Native-code access is checked earlier, and the new button only opens settings; it does not grant trust. Added diagnostic information is limited to failures of the requesting extension’s own service. No material new security weakness was established in the reviewed paths.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed diagnostic path is scoped to the requesting plugin’s eligible service. The inspected identity binding and service lookup do not introduce cross-plugin access, new credentials or additional execution authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — Newly returned lastError text can reveal startup filesystem paths or process failure details to the plugin’s UI. The inspected producers use fixed messages and bounded operating-system errors, not captured stderr. Given the own-plugin eligibility controls and unchanged native-code trust requirement, this does not establish a material new attack path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The notice action only clears the toast and opens a fixed settings destination. Enabling native code still requires selecting the plugin’s switch and completing its separate confirmation; the notice itself neither selects a plugin for trust nor invokes the trust setter.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Revocation clears in-memory trust before durable persistence and supervisor synchronization. A failed write can therefore delay stopping an existing process, a pre-existing lifecycle limitation. The new request gate rejects UI calls during that interval, and the synchronous assertion-to-request sequence introduces no intervening asynchronous authorization gap.

@BIackFIame The current head 8ecec9c is blocked by Windows CI: plugin-service-notice.test.mjs:189 expects LF in its source regex, but the Windows checkout contains CRLF. Please make the assertion line-ending independent.
CodeRabbit also flagged clipped quota labels in a compact widget and the toast's announcement semantics. These affect presentation, so the owner must inspect and approve the proposed UI before this PR is merged. Please keep functional/test corrections separate from any further layout changes.
Rebase onto current main so subsequent reviews use the repository's CodeRabbit configuration.
… checkout
The wiring test matched registerIpc's source with a literal LF between the
manager's check and the supervisor request, so it failed on a Windows checkout
(core.autocrlf=true). It now matches any whitespace there, and the same checks
also run on CRLF copies of the four files.

- A limits tile up to four grid columns wide put the percentage, the
used/left text and the countdown on one line, so "used · 91% left" (and
the longer Russian text) was cut off at two to four columns. In such a
tile the countdown stays beside the percentage and the used/left text
gets its own line below them, wrapping at its spaces; the icon and
padding are smaller. Only a row too short for two lines (a two-row tile
with three providers) shortens the text as before, with the full text on
hover. The rail can no longer be pushed out of the row.
- The toast is a polite status region that stays mounted, instead of an
alert added only when it has an "Open settings" button.
UI contract (en/ru/zh-CN) says how a narrow limits tile reads.
Windows CI (plugin-service-notice.test.mjs:189): fixed in its own commit, test(plugins): check the service notice wiring the same way on a CRLF checkout (ccb4504). The regex had a literal \n between plugins.assertService(...) and pluginServices.request; it now matches any whitespace, and the same wiring checks also run on CRLF copies of the four source files, so an LF-only pattern fails on macOS and Linux too. It was the only failure in that Windows run. I checked the other source and CSS assertions in this PR's tests: they are single-line or normalize line endings.
CodeRabbit's two presentation findings: kept apart from the functional and test fixes, as asked, in one last commit, fix(ui): keep limit labels readable in a compact widget and announce service notices politely (3f91f7f). It is for the owner to look at before merge and can be dropped on its own; commits 1 to 3 do not depend on it. To look at it: Edit HOME, resize the limits tile to two or three columns in English and Russian, and open a plugin page whose native code is off. The UI contract (en/ru/zh-CN) describes the narrow limits tile.
Rebased onto current main (c5731f4) with no conflicts; the two original commits are unchanged.
Verification: build, typecheck and secret audit pass; renderer bundle test passes, code reachable from App.js 1,052,765 bytes against 1,050,530 on main (+2,235, budget 1,100,000); full suite 2,711 tests, 2,705 pass, 0 fail, 6 skipped (main c5731f4: 2,699 / 2,693 / 0 / 6; the 12 added tests are this PR's).

Add component-level assertions for both usage-history branches.
The focused test checks only the formatter and templates. Add rendered cases for an account with latest and for a WindowReport with accounts: [] and a non-null latest. Assert that both outputs contain the used and remaining shares. Otherwise, either changed caller can revert to a bare percentage without failing the relevant tests.
