Bumps satellite.js from 6.0.2 to 7.1.0.

Highlight: Community decay check

For some satellites - typically objects that decayed a long time ago - SGP4 does not report a "Decayed" state and instead returns a position and velocity which are actually meaningless. In other words, propagation "succeeds", but the values don't make any sense and the satellite has, in reality, re-entered.

The community decay check lets you correctly identify this situation as decay, rather than using garbage coordinates.

This includes:

  • a checkForDecay function that allows filtering satellites decayed long ago but for which SGP4 reports "successful" propagation with garbage positions (see section in the docs).
  • for propagate function, a new argument options: { communityDecayCheckEnabled: boolean } that internally invokes checkForDecay, and where a garbage position would be returned, it instead returns null and sets SatRec.error = SatRecError.Decayed as usual for decayed satellites. There is no similar argument for sgp4() because it's kept compliant to the original, so if you use sgp4() you can call checkForDecay separately.

Other changes

  • Feature: Exposed mean motion with kozai in SatRec as nokozai.
  • Fix: sunPos mean anomaly was not fully converted to radians, making results up to 1.1° off instead of the documented 0.01°. The WASM SunPositionCalculator carried the same error and is fixed too. While shadowFraction itself is unchanged, its output shifts when it's given sunPos results.
  • Test: Unit tests sunPos, shadowFraction.
  • Chore: bumps to dev dependencies, including to TypeScript 7.

7.0.1

  • fix: propagate function return type did not have null in some of its overloads.

7.0.0

Highlights

🎉 Official docs site

🚀 Bulk Propagation API

Designed to bulk process many satellites and dates, this API is backed by C++ compiled to WASM, showing 3x to 12x improvement compared to propagate loop. See blog article: WASM: Making the Fastest SGP4 for the web for implementation details and benchmarks.

Note: since JavaScript engines are very good at optimization, speed up is not guaranteed in all cases.

☀️ Shadow calculation

Know if a satellite is lit or in the shadow; if in penumbra, know the fraction of Sun obscured by Earth, thus exactly how much light is coming to the satellite.

Breaking changes

  • BREAKING: Dropped support for Node.js of versions NOT listed here:
    • 20.19 and above
    • 22.13 and above
    • Major version 24 and newer
  • BREAKING: Dropped support for non-evergreen browsers.
  • BREAKING: Dropped AMD, CJS and minified builds. The library is now ESM only. If you're on Node.js that is listed above and use CJS, this doesn't affect you, because all current LTS Node.js support require(ESM) and this library works with that.
  • BREAKING: sunPos() now returns EciVec3<AU> as its rsun output, instead of number[]:
    // before
    const {
      rsun: [x, y, z], rtasc, decl
    } = sunPos(jday);
    // after
    const {

Changelog

Sourced from satellite.js's changelog.

7.1.0 (2026-07-23)

  • Feature: add checkForDecay function that allows filtering satellites decayed long ago but for which SGP4 reports "successful" propagation with garbage positions (see section in the docs).
  • Feature: add options: { communityDecayCheckEnabled: boolean } argument to propagate function that internally invokes checkForDecay, catches garbage positions and, as usual, returns null and sets SatRec.error = SatRecError.Decayed. In case you're using sgp4, you can invoke checkForDecay manually after calling sgp4().
  • Feature: Exposed mean motion with kozai in SatRec as nokozai.
  • Fix: sunPos mean anomaly was not fully converted to radians, making results up to 1.1° off instead of the documented 0.01°. The WASM SunPositionCalculator carried the same error and is fixed too. shadowFraction itself is unchanged, but its output shifts when it's given sunPos results.
  • Test: Unit tests sunPos, shadowFraction.
  • Chore: bumps to dev dependencies, including to TypeScript 7.

7.0.1 (2026-05-15)

  • Fix: propagate function did not have a null return type in its overloads.

7.0.0 (2026-03-24)

  • Feature: Official docs site. Because of that, Readme is now more concise.

  • Feature: Bulk Propagation API.

  • Feature: Shadow calculation. New shadowFraction function to know if a satellite is lit or in the shadow; if in penumbra, know the fraction of Sun obscured by Earth, thus exactly how much light is coming to the satellite.

  • BREAKING: Dropped support for Node.js of versions NOT listed here:

    • 20.19 and above
    • 22.13 and above
    • Major version 24 and newer
  • BREAKING: Dropped support for non-evergreen browsers.

  • BREAKING: sunPos() now returns EciVec3<AU> as its rsun output, instead of number[]:

    // before
    const {
      rsun: [x, y, z], rtasc, decl
    } = sunPos(jday);
    // after
    const {
      rsun: { x, y, z }, rtasc, decl
    } = sunPos(jday);
  • BREAKING: The units of ndot and nddot fields on the SatRec object have changed:

    Field v6 v7
    ndot rev/day² rad/min²
    nddot rev/day³ rad/min³

    If you read these fields directly, you will need to adjust for the new units.

      import { constants } from 'satellite.js';
