SSOConsoleModeMediaManager

SSOConsoleModeMediaManager is a native macOS application designed for better management of the box art and backgrounds for your library when using console mode on the RetroRemake SuperStation One. It seamlessly scans your ROM folders, identifies missing artwork, and provides tools to automatically or manually scrape high-quality box art and backgrounds from sources like IGDB and SteamGridDB.

Features

  • Library & Platform Modes: Easily manage a single folder of ROMs or a root directory containing multiple platform subfolders.
  • Automated Scraping: Automatically fetch missing box art and backgrounds in bulk using customizable priority sources.
  • Manual Scraping: Search and select specific artwork for individual games when automated scraping needs a fine-tuned touch.
  • Smart Organization: All downloaded media is saved neatly in a media/ folder alongside your ROMs (e.g., [Library_Path]/media/[GameName].[ext]), keeping your setup clean and portable.
  • Optimized Storage: Downloaded images are automatically compressed to save space on your SD card without sacrificing visual quality.
  • Smart Backgrounds & Banners: You can safely use wide banners in place of full backgrounds! If a downloaded background isn't natively 1920x1080, it will be placed at the bottom of the screen and a smooth gradient will be added to fill the rest of the space seamlessly.
  • Library Health Overview: Quickly filter your library to see which games are complete, missing box art, or missing backgrounds.
  • Native macOS Experience: Built using SwiftUI for macOS 14, providing a fast, familiar, and responsive interface.

Requirements

  • macOS 14.0 or later.
  • Xcode 15 or later (if building from source).
  • (Optional but preferred) API credentials for IGDB and/or SteamGridDB. While a free built-in scraper is available, using your own API keys in the app settings is highly recommended for better backgrounds.

Getting Started

Building from Source

  1. Clone this repository to your local machine.
  2. Open the project folder or Package.swift in Xcode.
  3. Select the SSOConsoleModeMediaManagerApp scheme.
  4. Build and Run (Cmd + R).

Initial Setup

  1. Configure API Keys (Optional): When you first launch the app, open the Settings window (via the menu bar or Cmd + ,). While there is a free scraper built-in, entering your own IGDB Client ID/Secret and SteamGridDB API Key is preferred for better backgrounds.
  2. Select Your Library: Insert your SD card and click "Select Folder" on the main screen to select the games folder as your library.
    • Use Library Mode if you are selecting a master directory that contains subfolders for different platforms (e.g., games/SNES, games/N64).
    • Use Platform Mode if you are selecting a single folder containing ROMs for just one system.
  3. Start Scraping: Use the auto-scrape button on the top toolbar to automatically fill in missing artwork based on your configured priorities, or click the scrape icon on any individual game to find specific art.

How Media is Saved

SSOConsoleModeMediaManager does not trap your artwork inside a hidden app container. Instead, it respects your file system.

When artwork is downloaded, it is placed directly into a media folder within the root folder you selected.

  • Box Art: Library_Path/media/[RomFileName].jpg
  • Backgrounds: Library_Path/media/[RomFileName]-BG.jpg

This ensures that your scraped media remains exactly where your ROMs are, ready to be used by other console frontends or backup tools.
