feat: hide provider logos in every collapsed state (alternative to #34) - #125
Alternative to #34 for #28. This builds directly on @justice-hwan's work in #34. Their two commits (fce95a6, da5ac95) start this branch unchanged. They're followed by a merge of current main that ports #34 to today's layout, and one commit that changes the behavior. Credit for the feature, the setting, the store and the notched-only gating goes to them. This PR only proposes a different scope for the setting.
With Always show usage on, the island rests in the peek state. In #34 it stays as wide as today, so turning the setting off saves no space for those users. Here, with Provider logos off on a notched display, the logo slots are gone in every collapsed state:
At rest: the island is the notch itself.
Peek: only the usage readings remain.
Trade-off: without logos, the provider colour of each reading identifies the provider. The setting's subtitle says so.
Single provider: without the logo slot there's no room for the expanding gauge. The percentage moves into the right-hand slot and mirrors the reset reading on the left, with a "Used"/"Left" caption on notches at least 32pt tall (the same rule the reset caption uses).
removed the screen/overview sizing from IslandModel;
replaced LogoOverlay with ProviderMark and configurable left/right providers.
The merge commit re-applies #34 on top of that. Its behavior matches #34, and it also hides the small single-provider gauge that sits in the right-hand logo slot. The follow-up commit then:
extends hiding to the peek state;
renames the setting, section and strings (English and Simplified Chinese);
changes the preference key from MacIsland.compactLogosVisible to MacIsland.providerLogosVisible, because the meaning changed. Neither key has shipped in a release.
Verification
Checks and results:
Universal app build (./build.sh) succeeds.
I rendered the island off-screen in demo mode, under a separate bundle ID so real preferences and usage data stay untouched. The renders cover rest and peek, one and two providers, logos on and off, and notch heights of 28 and 32pt. Measured widths: logos on 261pt at rest / 373pt peek; logos off 185pt (the notch) at rest / 297pt peek. Captions drop out at 28pt as expected.
None of the test scripts compile these view files, so there are no automated tests for this change.
Steps to verify:
On a notched display, open Settings → Display → Logos and turn Provider logos off. The resting island shrinks to the notch.
Hover: the island grows by the usage readings only, with no logos, and readings keep their provider colours.
Turn Always show usage on: the resting peek is 76pt narrower than with logos on.
Select a single provider: the reset time shows on the left, and the percentage (plus caption on taller notches) on the right.
Move the island to a non-notched display: the toggle is hidden and the logos show.
Not verified: the hover/toggle animations on a real screen, a live non-notched display, and VoiceOver output. Screen capture isn't available in my environment.
Screenshots (required for UI changes)
The new setting:
How it looks without the logos:
Risks
Default: logos stay on, so nothing changes until a user turns them off.
Identification: with logos off, colour is the only cue for which reading belongs to which provider.
.percentage pill contents: previously unused. Now only the single-provider logos-off layout uses them, and their accessibility now matches the stacked readings (hidden at rest, readable once revealed). showsResetCaption is renamed to showsCaption.
Added a Provider logos setting under Settings → Display on notched displays.
When logos are hidden, the island stays compact against the notch. Usage readings retain provider colors, including past alert thresholds, while the warning icon indicates severity.
Usage details appear while peeking or when Always show usage is enabled.
Documentation
Updated the English and Simplified Chinese README descriptions of logo visibility and compact island behavior.
Adds an Idle logos setting that affects only the compact rest state, preserving hover peek and expanded layouts while allowing the resting island to shrink to the notch width.
Constraint: Issue ericjypark#28 asks to reduce idle notch-adjacent logo footprint without changing hover, expanded, sync, or alert behavior.
Rejected: Hide logos in peek or expanded states | those states still need provider context and existing geometry.
Confidence: high
Scope-risk: narrow
Directive: Keep sync sweep and alert glow tied to compact model.size so hidden idle logos still fit the physical notch.
Tested: ./scripts/verify.sh
Treat the idle-logo preference as effective only on physical-notch targets so external displays never collapse into an empty synthetic pill.
Constraint: Maintainer review found the toggle was exposed and effective on non-notched displays, where hiding logos leaves an empty black pill.
Rejected: Delay hover logo animations | review called it minor polish and it would widen scope.
Confidence: high
Scope-risk: narrow
Directive: Keep hover peek and expanded geometry unchanged; only compact notched displays should shrink.
Tested: ./scripts/verify.sh
Bring PR ericjypark#34 (written against v0.1.10) up to date with main. Its
IslandModel and IslandRootView changes are ported onto the current code:
the screen/overview sizing it carried no longer exists, and the
per-provider LogoOverlay was replaced by ProviderMark with configurable
left/right providers. Behavior is unchanged from ericjypark#34: logos hide only in
the compact rest state on notched displays, now including the
single-provider gauge that stands in for the right logo.
Build on ericjypark#34's idle-logo setting, but apply it to the peek as well as the
compact rest state. With "Provider logos" off on a notched display, the
silhouette drops the logo tabs in every collapsed state: at rest it is the
notch itself, and the peek (including "Always show usage") carries only
the color-coded usage pills, 76pt narrower than before.
A single provider has no room for the unrolling gauge without the logo
tab, so its percentage moves into the right pill slot, mirroring the
reset pill on the left, with a Used/Left caption on taller notches.
Logos never fade in on hover, so the staggered hover-in noted in the ericjypark#34
review cannot occur. Non-notched displays still ignore the setting and
hide the toggle.

Walkthrough
Adds a persisted provider-logo setting for notched displays. When logos are hidden, the island adjusts compact and peek sizing and displays provider-colored usage readings through percentage pills.
Adds a persisted logo-visibility preference and a Display toggle shown for notched displays. Adds English and Simplified Chinese labels and descriptions, and updates the changelog and README descriptions.
Model visibility and island sizing Sources/Model/IslandModel.swift
IslandModel observes preference changes and animates updates. Logo visibility follows the preference on notched displays and remains enabled on non-notched displays. Compact and peek widths omit logo tab width when logos are hidden.
Logo rendering and usage pills Sources/Views/IslandRootView.swift, Sources/Views/NotchPeekPill.swift
IslandRootView hides logos and adds a percentage pill when logos are hidden. NotchPeekPill supports percentage captions, provider tint, severity-colored warning glyphs, compact currency formatting for unlimited amounts, and reveal-based accessibility behavior.
Long unlimited-credit values may appear truncated in the compact display; fix the sizing before or shortly after merging.

Preserve provider identity when logos are hidden
When Provider logos is off with two selected providers, this hides the explicit provider marks and leaves the peek pills as the only identity cue. Those pills do not always carry distinct brand colors: NotchPeekPill.effectiveTint replaces every warning/critical provider tint with the same amber/red, so if both providers cross the same threshold neither reading identifies which provider it belongs to (Codex and Grok are also both near-white at .none). Retain a provider-specific non-color cue or preserve brand tint while logos are hidden.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 81e75b4: with logos hidden, peek values keep the provider brand tint even past an alert threshold, so two providers at the same severity no longer render identical amber/red readings. The ⚠ glyph keeps the severity color. With logos visible, behavior is unchanged.

Expose the logo toggle's label and state to VoiceOver
When VoiceOver reaches this new setting, SettingsToggle is a plain Button whose label contains only Capsule/Circle shapes and exposes neither an accessibility label nor the isOn value; SettingsRow leaves that trailing button separate from its combined title/subtitle. The control therefore lacks the preference name and current state, so a VoiceOver user cannot reliably operate this feature. Add a localized label and on/off value or toggle semantics at this call site.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 81e75b4: the toggle now has a localized Provider logos accessibility label and an On/Off accessibility value (en + zh-Hans). The .isToggle trait is macOS 14+, and the app targets macOS 13, so label + value is used instead.
When the logos are hidden, peek values keep their provider's brand tint
even past an alert threshold, so two providers in the same severity no
longer render identical amber/red readings. The warning glyph keeps the
severity color.
Give the Provider logos toggle a VoiceOver label and On/Off value.

Constrain unlimited amounts in the percentage pill.
When logos are off for one provider, the percentage pill has a 42-point slot. An unlimited-credit amount can exceed that slot. percentLabel applies valueWidth only to .stacked, so the new .percentage value remains at its fixed intrinsic width and the overlay mask cuts it off. Apply valueWidth to .percentage too, so the existing minimum scale factor can fit the amount.

Constrain unlimited amounts in the percentage slot
When logos are hidden with one provider and the peek window is an unlimited Claude Enterprise credit amount, .percentage now emits localized currency here, but percentLabel only applies valueWidth to unlimited .stacked values (line 170) and the pill calls .fixedSize(). In locales where a sub-1,000 USD amount formats as 999,99 US$, the intrinsic text is wider than the 42-point percentage slot and is clipped by PeekPillOverlay's mask instead of scaling; give .percentage the same constrained frame.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in ac224af: percentLabel now applies valueWidth to unlimited amounts in .percentage as well as .stacked, so the existing minimumScaleFactor(0.5) scales a long localized currency into the slot instead of the mask clipping it. (This also covers CodeRabbit's outside-diff note on the same line.)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Invalidate the logo gate when displays change
When Settings remains open while Auto moves the island after a display is attached or detached, this gate has no reactive dependency on the screen configuration: IslandWindowController.observeScreenChanges handles didChangeScreenParametersNotification, but SettingsView observes only the unchanged target-display preference. The island can therefore switch notch status while Display keeps hiding the toggle (or exposes a no-op toggle on a non-notched target) until an unrelated observed object redraws the view; subscribe Settings to the same display-change event.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in ac224af: SettingsView now listens for NSApplication.didChangeScreenParametersNotification, the same event IslandWindowController repositions on, and the Display tab reads the resulting revision. The logo and spacing gates, the Auto subtitle and the display picker list now update when a display is attached or detached while Settings is open. DisplayInfo.currentTarget() resolves NSScreen.screens fresh, so it matches where the controller moves the island.
Give the single-provider percentage pill the same constrained width as
the stacked pill for unlimited credit amounts, so a long localized
currency scales down instead of being clipped by the slot mask.
Re-render the Display tab when the screen configuration changes. The
logo and spacing gates, the Auto subtitle, and the display list resolve
NSScreen directly, which SwiftUI can't observe, so they went stale when
a display was attached or detached with Settings open.

Preserve provider tint for unavailable pills
When logos are off and both selected providers are still loading or have unavailable readings, these stacked pills become identical white dots or -% values: NotchPeekPill.stackedContent's showSpinner and showDash branches bypass effectiveTint, so preservesBrandTint only identifies successful readings. The fresh evidence after the prior tint fix is this placeholder path; tint those placeholders or retain another provider cue so users can tell which connection lacks data.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 8f83fa0: under preservesBrandTint the loading dot and the -% placeholder now use the provider tint (in the stacked, percentage and fallback branches), so two providers without a reading are still distinguishable. Reset-pill placeholders stay neutral to match the white reset value, and the logos-visible path is unchanged.

With logos hidden, two providers that are both loading or both missing
a reading rendered identical white dots or "-%" placeholders. Tint
those placeholders with the provider color under preservesBrandTint so
each pill still names its provider. Reset placeholders stay neutral,
matching the reset value itself.

With Always show usage on, the island rests in the peek state. In #34 it stays as wide as today, so turning the setting off saves no space for those users. Here, with Provider logos off on a notched display, the logo slots are gone in every collapsed state:
