Before: roadmap row 3.10 was still 🟡. The library had inter-channel stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) inside Fiber, but no pump and no Raman noise, so distributed Raman gain could not be shown.

After: a new Raman-Amplified Span block, and an example "3.10 Distributed Raman amplification" in the Examples menu. The example runs the same 100 km span two ways:

  • with an EDFA alone, which gives an OSNR of 32.95 dB;
  • with a 500 mW counter pump at 1450 nm followed by an EDFA, which gives an OSNR of 38.54 dB.

The pumped span has 13.42 dB of on-off gain and an equivalent noise figure of −1.08 dB.

How: the pump is undepleted and decays along the span. The gain uses the same measured silica profile as kernels.raman_gain. Spontaneous Raman noise, including its thermal share, is integrated along the span and emitted as noise bins over the C-band. The block has no dispersion, no Kerr effect, no pump depletion and no double Rayleigh backscatter; the lesson says so and the roadmap lists them as open. The lesson's numbers, including its "Try this" claims, are tested in tests/test_amplified.py.

A new Raman-Amplified Span block (undepleted co- or counter-pump on silica's
measured gain shape, with spontaneous Raman noise) and the 3.10 project:
the same 100 km span with an EDFA alone and with a 500 mW counter pump,
5.59 dB of OSNR apart.
