Summary

Following up on #879 (which configured cargo-c and make install for local builds), this PR extends the release pipeline to package and publish C developer bundles (fff-c-{target}.tar.gz and .zip) in GitHub Releases across all 9 supported target platforms.

Downstream C/C++ developers and package managers can now directly download ready-to-use C developer packages without requiring a local Rust toolchain.

Existing release artifacts (c-lib-{target}.* for npm/Python packages and Neovim shared libraries) remain untouched for 100% backward compatibility.

Key Changes

  1. .github/workflows/release.yaml:

    • Replaced raw cargo build / cargo zigbuild steps in build-c with cargo cinstall via cargo-c.
    • Generates relocatable pkg-config files (prefix=${pcfiledir}/../..).
    • Sets macOS dylib install_name to @rpath/libfff_c.dylib.
    • Packages fff-c-{target}.tar.gz (and .zip for Windows) and publishes them with sha256 checksums.
    • Preserves c-lib-{target}.* artifacts for npm and python workflows.
  2. scripts/zig-cc.sh & scripts/zig-linker.sh:

    • Helper wrappers around zig cc -target "$ZIG_TARGET" for Linux cross-compilation:
      • Strips redundant --target=... flags passed by cargo-c/cc-rs.
      • Strips -Wl,--fix-cortex-a53-843419 when linking aarch64 targets via Zig's LLD backend.

Bundle Layout

    ├── fff_c.dll # DLL runtime
    └── fff_c.pdb # Debug symbols

Verification

  1. Full CI Matrix: Built and verified across all 9 targets in CI.
  2. Package Validation: Downloaded release packages and verified:
    • pkg-config --validate fff_c succeeds out-of-the-box.
    • Both dynamic and static linking compile and run demo search successfully.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • C SDK bundles are now included with releases for supported targets. Each bundle contains the library and developer files, with archives provided as tarballs and, for Windows, ZIP files.
    • Release notes now include information about the available C SDK archives.

📝 Walkthrough

The release workflow now uses cargo cinstall to build platform C libraries and SDK files. It creates and uploads SDK archives, and updates the release description with their formats and contents.

Changes: C SDK Release Artifacts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform C library installation
.github/workflows/release.yaml, scripts/zig-cc.sh, scripts/zig-linker.sh
The workflow uses cargo cinstall across Linux, Android, macOS, and Windows targets. Linux builds use Zig wrappers; macOS builds set the deployment target and sign the library and installed dylibs; Windows builds locate and copy the DLL into package paths.
SDK archives and release listing
.github/workflows/release.yaml
The workflow adjusts the pkg-config prefix when the file exists, creates tarballs and Windows ZIP archives, uploads the archives with the C library, and lists the archive formats and contents in the release description.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d4b30

The release workflow now builds C SDK bundles. One new third-party action is referenced by a mutable tag, which is a minor supply-chain hygiene concern. Pinning it to a reviewed commit SHA is a reasonable follow-up and should not block the merge.
