WizRec — free, open-source screen recorder & editor for macOS

By Devs Wizard. Opens your Camtasia projects.

WizRec records your screen, camera and microphone, then lets you edit on a multi-track timeline. It opens and saves Camtasia® .cmproj / .tscproj projects losslessly, so a project started in Camtasia on another Mac or PC can be edited here and opened there again.

This is an independent project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by TechSmith. Camtasia is a trademark of TechSmith Corporation and is used here only to describe file compatibility. The code is a clean-room implementation: it ships no TechSmith code, binaries or assets. Its built-in backgrounds, transitions, callouts, cursors and click effects are original work; its fonts are SIL Open Font License families.

Install

You need: a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Nothing else: no Xcode, no Homebrew. FFmpeg and everything WizRec needs are inside the app.

  1. Download the latest WizRec-x.y.z.dmg from Releases.
  2. Open the DMG and drag WizRec into Applications.
  3. First launch only: right-click (or Control-click) WizRec in Applications ▸ Open ▸ Open. WizRec is free and not notarized by Apple, so macOS asks this once. If it only offers Move to Trash, go to System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to WizRec.

Optional: check the download with shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt (from the same release) in the folder that holds both files. WizRec does not update itself yet; new versions appear on the Releases page.

To record, allow Screen & System Audio Recording, Camera and Microphone when macOS asks.

Optional, for better captions: WizRec transcribes with Apple's built-in speech recognition out of the box. For offline, multilingual transcription (e.g. Bengali) you can add whisper.cpp; see Captions.

Build from source (developers)

Only needed if you want to change WizRec. Requirements: macOS 14+, Xcode 16+ (Swift 6), Homebrew ffmpeg and pkg-config.

brew install ffmpeg pkg-config
swift build
swift test
scripts/make-app.sh # → build/WizRec.app (uses Homebrew's FFmpeg)
open build/WizRec.app

Command-line tools:

swift run tscproj info "<project.cmproj>"
swift run tscproj roundtrip "<project.tscproj>" -o /tmp/copy.tscproj
swift run wizrec-record --list # recorder check (needs Screen Recording permission)

A self-contained release DMG (FFmpeg bundled, so users need nothing else): scripts/release.sh. Pushing a v* tag builds it on GitHub and attaches it to a draft Release — see docs/RELEASING.md.
