test(swarm, limiter): the waits follow progress, and the stress test asserts atomicity rather than the host's clock - #535
Conversation
…sserts atomicity rather than the host's clock Three test methods decided whether bin/check was green on a busy machine, and all three decided it on the host's clock. They are the whole ./bin/check half of this repo's red baselines on the platform's coding boxes: 88 refusals over 13 tasks in 30 days, on 4-core 1.80 GHz hosts also running agent sessions, while the same SHA is green in CI and on a quiet machine. - swarm_supervision: wait_for_crash_count and wait_for_new_child had one fixed 20s budget for the whole wait. They now share wait_while_progressing, whose deadline resets whenever the thing waited on moves. A slow host lengthens the poll; a stopped supervisor still fails within one budget of its last move. extra_child_appeared? keeps its total deadline: it asserts nothing appears. - limiter_stress: over_limit == 0 and acquired == 1000 are claims about the host's throughput. What is left is the invariant the file exists for -- the limit is never breached, every attempt is accounted for, no slot leaks -- plus a starved case that holds every slot, where the old assertion is red by construction and the new ones hold. - bin/check's help claimed an NCPU default the script never set; CONTRIBUTING's Worker count section only said when to raise the count, not when to lower it. Both new cases were run red first, by mutation: suppressing Concurrent's release reddens the leak assertion, and removing the deadline reset reddens the progress case. Refs #522. Keep a fixed deadline for new-child waits.
wait_for_new_child uses wait_while_progressing, which resets its deadline whenever swarm.children.keys.sort changes. In test_kill_replacement_mid_restart_keeps_old_child_and_retries_slot, the killed replacement is excluded. If its reap occurs after this helper starts, the child-set change counts as progress even though no acceptable PID exists. A stalled retry can therefore wait beyond the original POLL_TIMEOUT budget.
Restore fixed-deadline polling in this helper. Keep the idle-progress behavior for waits that intentionally follow supervisor progress.

…ing the scheduler they are about Review finding, and it was the ironic one: `test_a_wait_follows_progress_rather_than_elapsed_time` produced its progress from a real thread sleeping 0.15s against a 0.3s idle budget, so a busy host could deschedule the mover past the budget and redden a test whose whole subject is not depending on the host. A test of a timing rule that depends on the scheduler for its timing is the class this PR exists to remove. `wait_while_progressing` now takes `clock` and `nap`, defaulted to the real pair and injected only by the two cases that test its deadline arithmetic. Those cases run with no threads and no sleeping: progress arrives BETWEEN polls, from the passage of fake time rather than from the probe, and the run outlasts four idle budgets in total — which a single total deadline cannot survive. Run RED: removing the deadline reset gives `Expected: 8, Actual: nil`. bin/check green: rubocop, 4316 runs / 0 failures, parity, 196s. The second finding — revert `wait_for_new_child` to a fixed total deadline — is declined on the PR, with the measurement: that wait is the single largest cause of the red baselines this PR fixes (83 refusals across 9 tasks). Both findings read, one taken and one declined. Taken — the progress test raced the scheduler. It produced progress from a real thread sleeping 0.15s against a 0.3s idle budget, so a busy host could deschedule the mover past the budget and redden a test whose whole subject is not depending on the host. Declined — reverting The unbounded-wait worry the suggestion implies does not arise, by enumeration of what

Both findings answered: the scheduler-dependent progress test was replaced with an injected clock (run red first), and reverting wait_for_new_child to a fixed 20s deadline is declined with the measurement — that wait is 83 of the refusals this PR fixes. bin/check green: 4316 runs, 0 failures.
…ot a flat 4 (#536) ## What The suite's parallel worker default was a flat `NCPU=4`. It now follows the machine: `Wurk::Test::DEFAULT_NCPU = (Etc.nprocessors / 2).clamp(1, 4)`. A 4-core box forks 2 workers, an 8-core one still forks 4, and an explicit `NCPU=<n>` is untouched. ## Why `test_helper`'s own comment has always justified the default as "deliberately below the core count of most machines that run this", and the same paragraph warns that one worker per core "oversubscribes badly, and the failures it produces are wall-clock ones (a drain that doesn't finish, a socket read that times out) rather than honest assertion failures". A flat 4 stopped honouring that the moment the suite ran on a 4-core machine, where 4 workers IS one worker per core. Two places that happens today: - **The developerz.ai fleet boxes** — 4 cores at 1.80 GHz, several sessions at once — run `./bin/check` on an unmodified checkout as a merge gate. Over the 30 days to 2026-09-18 that gate refused 12 tasks with 103 `box_baseline_red` events, and the test methods extracted from those tails were `SwarmSupervisionTest#test_kill_replacement_mid_restart` (83), `LimiterStressTest#test_1000_concurrent_acquires_never_exceed_the_limit` (3) and `SwarmSupervisionTest#test_crash_loop_backoff_grows_and_term_drains_while_pending` (2) — every one of them timing-sensitive, and every one fixed by #535. - **CI's own fallback runner**, `ubuntu-latest`, is 4 vCPU. #535 fixed the three tests. This removes the remaining way to reproduce the class without an operator remembering to set `NCPU=2` in a box's environment — a lever that has to be re-applied on every machine and survives no reprovision. ## Changes - `Wurk::Test::DEFAULT_NCPU` beside the other parallelism constants; the `ENV['NCPU']` line reads it instead of the literal `4`. The explicit-override path and the `clamp(1, WORKER_DATABASES)` Redis-isolation ceiling are unchanged. - The NCPU comment block now states the rule it implements, and carries the measurement below so the next reader does not have to re-derive the cost. - `test/unit/ncpu_default_test.rb` — four assertions on the constant's PROPERTIES, not its formula: never more workers than cores, never above 4, never below 1, never above `WORKER_DATABASES`. - `CLAUDE.md`'s CI standard, which documented "workers stay at `NCPU=4` … which is why the suite runner wants roughly a 4 vCPU box". Left alone it would assert a default the code no longer has. ## Verification Measured against main (`308bdd7`) on a 6-core host, with `taskset -c 0-3` giving the suite a 4-core view — `Etc.nprocessors` honours CPU affinity, so this is the same arithmetic a 4-core box does: | run | result | wall clock | |---|---|---| | `NCPU=4`, 4 cores | 4316 runs, 11915 assertions, 0 failures, 6 skips | 4m57s | | `NCPU=2`, 4 cores | 4316 runs, 11915 assertions, 0 failures, 6 skips | 5m24s | So halving the workers costs **9%** of the gate, not double — this suite waits far more than it computes. **Stated plainly: this is not a local reproduction of the box failure.** Main's tip is green at 4 workers on 4 cores. The fleet boxes differ in two ways `taskset` cannot reproduce — a 1.80 GHz clock and several sessions sharing the box — so this change is about the machine the suite is given, not about a red I could produce here. Also checked: - The default resolves to 3 on the 6-core host and 2 under `taskset -c 0-3`; an explicit `NCPU=7` is still honoured. - The new test was **run red first**: with the constant deliberately set to `Etc.nprocessors * 2` it fails with `Expected 12 to be <= 6`. - `bundle exec rubocop` clean on both changed Ruby files. - `./bin/check` green with the patch applied, branch off `origin/main` at `308bdd7` (the default resolves to 3 on this 6-core host): **4318 runs, 11923 assertions, 0 failures, 0 errors, 6 skips**, parity oracles 23/23, exit 0, 3m17s. The 4318 is the 4316 of the table plus this PR's two. What
Three test methods decide whether this repo's own
bin/checkis green on a machine that isbusy, and all three decide it on the host's clock rather than on anything wurk guarantees.
They are the entire
./bin/checkhalf of the red baselines on the platform's coding boxes.Measured on the platform's prod database, 30 days to 2026-09-18 — every
box_baseline_redrefusal on
developerz-ai/wurkwhose tail names a test:SwarmSupervisionTest#test_kill_replacement_mid_restart_keeps_old_child_and_retries_slotLimiterStressTest#test_1000_concurrent_acquires_never_exceed_the_limitSwarmSupervisionTest#test_crash_loop_backoff_grows_and_term_drains_while_pendingThe same SHA is green on a quiet machine —
bin/checkon79eace3: 4313 runs, 0 failures,268s, exit 0 — and green in CI, which runs on a dedicated 4-vCPU runner. The boxes are 4 cores
at 1.80 GHz running several agent sessions at once, where the suite takes 366–734s instead of
209s. Nothing about the diffs under test was involved: a red baseline is measured on the
UNMODIFIED checkout.
Same class as #522, which owns three other methods. Cross-filed as
developerz-ai/developerz.ai#4386, where the original diagnosis — a box with no Redis — is
corrected with the measurements: every box adverts
service:redis, and the failing runsreached 4313 tests.
Changes
test/integration/swarm_supervision_test.rb— the waits follow PROGRESS, not elapsed time.wait_for_crash_countandwait_for_new_childhad one fixed 20s budget for the whole wait, soevery assertion downstream was a bet on how fast the host forks and boots a Ruby child. They now
share
wait_while_progressing, whose deadline RESETS whenever the thing being waited on moves —the crash log growing, the child set changing. A host that is merely slow lengthens the poll; a
supervisor that has stopped still fails within one budget of its last move.
extra_child_appeared?keeps its total deadline on purpose: it asserts that nothing appears, so waiting longer is the
assertion.
test/integration/limiter_stress_test.rb— the stress test asserts atomicity, which is what itis for.
over_limit == 0("no acquire should time out with a 15s wait") andacquired == 1000are claims about the host's throughput, not about the Lua acquire script; on a loaded box one
acquire in a thousand waits too long and the suite calls it a bug. What survives is the invariant
the file exists to pin: the limit is never breached, every attempt is accounted for as acquired or
refused, and no slot leaks. Per #522's acceptance criteria, no wait/timeout literal here grows —
the new case adds a SHORTER one (0.5s).
bin/check+CONTRIBUTING.md— the documentedNCPUdefault now exists, and the lever pointsboth ways. The help claimed "default: core count, capped at 14" and the script sets nothing:
test/test_helper.rbdefaults to 4 regardless of the machine. One line, corrected, pointing at thesection that owns the trade-off. That section only told you when to RAISE the count; it now also
says when to lower it, with the measured case — a 4-core host running other work is not the machine
