Improve Domains & DNS #905

High-Level Summary

Datum's current DNS and Domains feature set suffer from both usability and performance issues. This enhancement is designed to improve the experience for key use cases, especially the creation and management of DNS zones and related records; the management of Domain resources; and interaction with the ALB feature.

Motivation

DNS is a foundational service and needs to "Just Work." We'll know this is done when it's

• easy to add and verify domains,
• create DNS zones and records, and
• clearly associate records with other resources such as ALB and Compute.

Today these processes are convoluted.

Additionally, users are often left in a "validating" state with no clear reason as to why or what is really happening.

Goals

A streamlined and improved experience will have the following attributes

• Defined user stories describing foundational experiences
• Revised AX/DX and especially UX flows
• End to end tests to exercise those experiences
• Published SLOs
• Concise, actionable errors surfaced to our users

Non-Goals

This enhancement involves improvements to the existing product and does not include adding new features such as DNSSEC, AXFR/IXFR, or new record types.
