Description

@mksinghtx

Galactic VPC (gVPC) is an SRv6-bsaed overlay network that can traverse disparate environments.

Similar to VPC concepts in public clouds, we provide a private address space where you can attach workloads, land connections, and control what is exposed to the internet. However, as the name suggests, Galactic VPC isn't limited by location or cloud provider. Users can connect devices across environments (e.g. hyperscale public clouds, private clouds, neoclouds, and enterprise networks) with native network isolation. Think of it like a traditional private backbone, but one that can go "anywhere".

Galactic VPC is designed to connect applications/agents/services over private networks using discovery mechanisms (DNS, indexes etc) and connecting endpoints for agents/services/apps.

While there are many pieces to this feature over time, our "minimum tryable" effort here focuses on:

  • datumctl-driven, but portal visible
  • SRv6 overlay
  • IPv6 addressing
  • NAT v4/ v6 with ingress/egress to internet
  • Metrics for traffic by attachment

Scoped separately but worth mentioning, types of attachments:

  • compute instances
  • iroh endpoints
  • wireguard subnets
  • tailnets

    @mksinghtx is this outdated? I wonder if we should lean into datum-cloud/galactic#688 instead?

    Um, not really, @ecv and I had discussed this and datum-cloud/galactic#688 is a PoC - that illustrates the indexes part of the discovery. I would keep this as an Epic.

    @mksinghtx maybe we link these together and have an overall enhancement?

    @jacobsmith928 added datum-cloud/galactic#688 as sub-issue and will add upcoming enhancement by Scot here as well
