Nbsp is the Noaaport Broadcast System Processor. It is a software suite for receiving, processing, and distributing the contents of the NOAAPort data stream.
The core receiver and processing path is written in C. The post-processing and distribution layers are built from Tcl libraries and scripts. Nbsp can run as a standalone system or in a master-slave arrangement, where one instance receives the broadcast feed and another instance performs further processing or redistribution.
Nbsp is used to:
- filter and store selected products,
- trigger notifications and database updates,
- redistribute data by network services and local file layouts,
- support web-based monitoring and statistics,
- integrate with custom scripts and external programs.
The tree also includes supporting components such as tclhttpd,
tclgempak, tclgrads, tclldm, tclmetar, tclssh, and
tclupperair.

Current development is tracked at version 2.3.9r2.
The 2025/2026 updates in this tree include:
- updated GOES-R handling and related filter support,
- support for internet-feed based operation instead of a local C-band receive chain,
- the Ubuntu 26.10 migration and build bootstrap fixes,
- automatic Ubuntu dependency installation from
configure.shwhen packages are missing.
The top-level configure.sh now checks /etc/os-release and, on
Ubuntu, verifies the build prerequisites before continuing. If required
packages are missing, it installs them with apt-get.
The current Ubuntu package set is:
pkg-configtcl-devlibdb-devlibpng-devlibwrap0-devlibncurses-devlibbz2-devlibnetcdf-dev
If the script is not running as root, it uses sudo and prompts for the
administrator password before installing the missing packages.
Install the repository checkout and open a shell in the top-level directory.
Run:
./configure.sh make
When
configure.shdetects missing Ubuntu build packages, it will ask for your password throughsudoand install the required dependencies automatically.
If you prefer to install packages manually, install the list above first
and then rerun ./configure.sh.
The processing of satellite files was updated, especially GOES-R files.
The current version (nbsp-2.3.9r) produces images directly from the
data files using the new nbspgoesr and nbspgoesrinfo programs and
the corresponding nbspgislib and nbspgislibmap libraries.
Support was added for downloading files from internet feeds instead of using a C-band dish and receiver. A live instance of that configuration is
To configure Nbsp this way, install npemwin as well and follow the
instructions in the satftp.README file from the npemwin
distribution.
