Fixes #467

SVG and MathML names are case-sensitive, but Comark lowercased them. Client-side renderers then built viewbox and lineargradient, which the browser ignores, so icons render at the wrong size or without gradients. Attribute names now keep the author's case inside SVG and MathML. Element names get the HTML standard's SVG/MathML case adjustment from htmlparser2, so LINEARGRADIENT becomes linearGradient and there is no element map. HTML names outside foreign content stay lowercase, and <Hello> still becomes hello.

Inline HTML reaches the parser one tag at a time, so the token processor now passes the SVG/MathML context to each fragment. Two related fixes follow from that context: self-closed foreign elements such as <path/> no longer swallow their siblings, and closing tags with hyphens (</annotation-xml>, custom elements) now match their opener. Because the parser no longer lowercases attribute names, case-variant duplicates keep the first occurrence, as browsers do (<a href="/safe" HREF="javascript:..."> keeps /safe).

Note

Security: outerHTML is added to the props that framework renderers never forward and that the security plugin rejects. Vue sets it as a DOM property on HTML elements, so a re-render with a changed value injects markup. It was already reachable through [x]{outerHTML="..."}, and case preservation added a path through <foreignObject>. The security docs list it now.

A blank line inside an SVG still ends the HTML block, per the CommonMark rule, so later elements land outside the <svg>. This is unchanged from main and out of scope; keep inline SVG free of blank lines.

Tests cover inline and block SVG/MathML casing, case adjustment of wrongly cased names, self-closing, duplicate attributes, hyphenated closing tags, headings, streaming, and round-trips, plus the outerHTML sink in the renderer floor, the security plugin, and the Vue renderer. New SPEC fixtures: SPEC/HTML/svg.md and SPEC/HTML/svg-block.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security

    • Blocked outerHTML attributes and bindings, including case variants, to prevent unsafe HTML injection.
    • Security filtering continues to recognize dangerous attributes and URLs regardless of casing.
  • Features

    • Preserved authored casing for mixed-case HTML and SVG names while normalizing all-uppercase names. When attributes differ only by case, the first one is retained.
    • Added SVG examples showing parsing, rendering, and Markdown round-trips.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified attribute casing and security behavior in the HTML and security guidance.

Keep the author's case for attribute names inside SVG and MathML, and
apply the HTML standard's case adjustment to their element names.
Names outside foreign content stay lowercase, so viewBox and
linearGradient now reach framework renderers intact.

Inline HTML fragments are parsed one tag at a time, so the token
processor passes the SVG/MathML context to each fragment. With that
context, self-closed foreign elements such as <path/> are void, and
closing tags with hyphens match their opener.

Keep the first of case-variant duplicate attributes, as browsers do.
Drop outerHTML from rendered attributes and reject it in the security
plugin, because Vue sets it as a DOM property and a re-render then
injects markup.

📝 Walkthrough

The parser now preserves authored casing for HTML names that contain lowercase letters and keeps the first case-insensitive duplicate attribute. The changes also filter outerHTML sink attributes and add SVG parsing and rendering examples and tests.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#467] requires correctly cased SVG element and attribute names, while ordinary HTML element names remain lowercase. normalizeName in packages/comark/src/internal/parse/utils.ts applies one global all-uppercase rule and has no SVG or MathML context. Therefore LINEARGRADIENT becomes lineargradient and VIEWBOX becomes viewbox, instead of the foreign-content adjustments required by the issue. The test in packages/comark/test/svg-case.test.ts asserts this incorrect behavior. The same rule also preserves mixed-case ordinary HTML names such as Hello, which conflicts with the linked issue requirement that HTML names remain lowercase.

Resolution

Implement context-aware SVG and MathML name adjustment for inline and block parsing. Map foreign element and attribute names to the HTML-standard forms, including linearGradient and viewBox. Lowercase ordinary HTML element names outside foreign content. Add tests for the required foreign adjustments and for lowercase ordinary HTML names.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The outerHTML changes in packages/comark/src/internal/props-validation.ts, packages/comark/src/internal/stringify/attributes.ts, the security documentation, and renderer and security tests add independent DOM-sink hardening. Issue [#467] requests SVG and MathML name handling. It does not require blocking outerHTML, and the PR description states that this sink was already reachable before the casing change.

Thanks for this, @adamdehaven!
main replaced htmlparser2 with a new tree builder in #401, so I reworked the PR on top of it:

  • One case rule: attribute names now use the same rule as tag names (all-uppercase → lowercase, otherwise keep). This replaces the SVG/MathML context tracking, which no longer had htmlparser2 to lean on. The parser change is about 15 lines and also fixes camelCase component props.

  • Kept: first-wins for duplicate attributes and the outerHTML blocking, both unchanged.

  • Dropped: case adjustment of wrongly cased SVG names (LINEARGRADIENT → linearGradient). It needs the standard's name table and isn't worth it for a Markdown parser.

  • Already on main: self-closed <path/> and hyphenated closing tags are handled by the new parser.
