Summary

Closes #65.

  • The handoff that /compile writes for the implementation agent gains a section, "When a Request Is Not in the Spec". If an ADR excludes the request, the agent names it and does not build. Otherwise it says the spec is silent, proposes the smallest spec change, asks, and updates the spec files before implementing.
  • The line that said only "stop and check the ADRs" now points at that section. The extracted ADRs list exclusions only, so the old line resolved nothing for an unlisted request.
  • Implementation choices the spec leaves open are explicitly the agent's to make.
  • The tea-tracker example handoff is regenerated. A new test fails if it drifts from the generator.
  • Plugin version 0.5.1 to 0.5.2.

Behaviour change for plugin users

Every handoff generated from now on carries the new section. Existing handoffs in users' projects are unchanged until they recompile.

Evidence and its limit

The constitution-lift experiment saw a rule with no compliant path halt a harmless feature in 6 of 6 runs, on a different repo. Nothing has measured a generated handoff before or after this change, so this is a reasoned fix, not a tested one.

Test plan

  • python checks/run_checks.py --ci --require-validator — 18 checks, 0 findings
  • python -m unittest discover -s checks/tests — 32 tests pass
  • python plugin/scripts/validate_spec.py examples/tea-tracker/spec-package still passes
  • Regenerated example differs from the old one only by the new text
  • Trial with a real implementation agent: not done
  • CI green

ADR impact

  • Existing ADR amended by an appended, dated section: ADR 0010

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The generated handoff told the implementation agent not to invent
requirements and to "stop and check the ADRs" when building beyond the spec.
The extracted ADRs list exclusions only, so a request the spec neither
includes nor excludes left the agent to halt or build unannounced.

- Add a "When a Request Is Not in the Spec" section to generate_handoff.py:
name the excluding ADR, or say the spec is silent, propose the spec change,
ask, and update the spec before implementing
- Regenerate the tea-tracker example handoff
- Add tests: the section exists and the committed example matches the generator
- Append the amendment to ADR 0010; bump the plugin to 0.5.2
