The reverse proxy functions required for the SMRT Link proxy are mostly all available out of the box from Nginx.  

Request mirroring

A built-in Nginx feature called request mirroring is used to send a copy of the SMRT Link request to the smrtlink-share app. mirror module documentation. One important characteristic of request mirroring in Nginx is that responses to mirrored requests are ignored.
