Re-pin six drifted ingredient pins; harden check-lock --verify - #13
Conversation
Fixes #11: the ingredient repos' published histories were rewritten and their release tags re-pointed after the pins were taken, so cold-cache installs failed with an integrity error while warmed machines passed. New shas read from the live remote tags; content-preserving, so treeSha256/fileCount are unchanged. check-lock.py --verify now reports per-pin provenance (remote vs warm cache), re-resolves every tag against the remote, and fails closed when the published tag has moved.

Requesting changes — the new --verify remote re-resolution is a false-positive generator for annotated tags, and the PR's own verification command now fails on a warm cache.
Blocker: remote_tag_sha returns the tag-object sha, not the peeled commit
remote_tag_sha calls git ls-remote <repo> <ref>. When a ref pattern is supplied, git omits the peeled ^{} line:
$ git ls-remote https://github.com/aska-digital/protean-drafts refs/tags/v1.0.0
6a9ce8a54648e4c74c9c6630765a98715e5ce513 refs/tags/v1.0.0
That is the tag object, not the commit c091210c… the lock pins. So in the new branch (check-lock.py, the args.verify and not args.offline and provenance.get(slug) != "remote" block), for any annotated tag the comparison remote != pin["sha"] is always true and the gate reports a spurious LOCK VIOLATION.
Repro (fully warm cache, real lock, the exact command cited in this PR's Verification section)
$ python3 build/check-lock.py kit.lock.json --verify --cache <warm-cache>
...
verify: protean-drafts [provenance: cache]
verify: protean-github-flow [provenance: cache]
verify: protean-sym2p [provenance: cache]
LOCK VIOLATION: 3
protean-drafts: refs/tags/v1.0.0 resolves on the remote to 6a9ce8a5…, not the pinned c091210c…
protean-github-flow: refs/tags/v1.0.0 resolves on the remote to ddfd63a0…, not the pinned 4995e4df…
protean-sym2p: refs/tags/v1.0.0 resolves on the remote to c06d4657…, not the pinned 43334b2f…
exit 1
Pre-fix code on the same warm cache: check-lock: PASS … exit 0. So this regresses the common (warm-cache) case for protean-drafts, protean-github-flow, and protean-sym2p — precisely the three annotated-tag pins. Because --verify is the workflow documented in README.md (line ~402), this lands on users, not just CI.
The cold-cache path is fine: it peels via git rev-parse FETCH_HEAD^{commit}, which is why a cold --verify passes all eight pins at provenance remote (reproduced). Only the warm-cache / ingredients-dir re-resolution branch is broken.
Suggested fix
Resolve the peeled ref, e.g. pass both patterns (verified: returns the commit):
$ git ls-remote <repo> refs/tags/v1.0.0 'refs/tags/v1.0.0^{}'
6a9ce8a5… refs/tags/v1.0.0
c091210c… refs/tags/v1.0.0^{}
…or run git ls-remote without a ref pattern and select the ^{} line when present. remote_tag_sha's own docstring already says it returns the peeled commit, so the intent is unambiguous.
Also (non-blocking)
- No test for the new behavior. Nothing in
tests/referencesremote_tag_sha, provenance, orls-remote; the existing--verifytests all pass--offline, which skips this branch entirely. The moved-tag fixture cited in the PR body was manual and isn't committed, so this defect shipped undetected. Please add coverage for both a moved tag (fails closed) and a current annotated tag (passes). - The stated evidence isn't reproducible as written.
build/verify-all.pyinvokespython3 -m unittest tests.test_kit_lock/tests.test_contribution_mode, buttests/has no__init__.py, so both gates error on a stock checkout. This is pre-existing (main fails identically; the 36 tests do pass viaunittest discover), so it isn't this PR's fault — but the changelog claim thatverify-all.pypasses can't be reproduced with the documented runner. - The
protean-opsexit-5op-contrib-statefollow-up and the out-of-scope README line are correctly handled as flagged follow-ups.
What does check out
The lock re-pin itself is sound: all six new shas match their live remote tags, and a cold-cache --verify recomputes every treeSha256 against the unchanged lock, confirming the "content-preserving rewrite" claim. The blocker is the check-lock.py change shipped alongside it. Fix that (plus a regression test) and this is mergeable.
remote_tag_sha requested only the tag ref pattern from ls-remote,
which omits the peeled ^{} line for annotated tags and returned the
tag-object sha, causing false LOCK VIOLATIONs on the warm-cache
re-resolution branch. Request refs/tags/vX and refs/tags/vX^{} and
prefer the peeled line; lightweight tags still resolve via fallback.
Add tests/test_check_lock_remote.py: unit coverage for peeled-tag
preference, pattern request, lightweight fallback, unresolvable ref,
plus end-to-end warm-cache --verify for current-annotated-tag-pass
and moved-tag-fails-closed with a faked ls-remote transport.

Team Review verdict: APPROVE-equivalent (formal APPROVE refused by platform — see note)
Formal APPROVE attempted on this exact head and refused: 422 Unprocessable Entity — Review Can not approve your own pull request (shared login is also PR author). Same verdict recorded as COMMENT.
Audited head: 3e5c657cfaca1f7f5483b32eb0713152045c9c48 (fresh read-only clone; builder tree untouched).
1. Annotated-tag peel (code read): build/check-lock.py:113-126 — remote_tag_sha now calls git ls-remote <repo> <ref> <ref>^{} and returns the ^{} -suffixed (peeled commit) line when present, falling back to the plain tag line for lightweight tags; non-zero ls-remote returns None. Correct fix for the false LOCK VIOLATION on annotated tags.
2. New tests: tests/test_check_lock_remote.py exists with 7 def test methods; real runner (cd tests && python3 -m unittest discover) → 43 tests, OK. (Bare python3 -m unittest discover -s tests from root finds 0 — pre-existing, no __init__.py, unrelated to this PR.)
3. Live verify at provenance remote (rerun by reviewer): cold-cache --verify → PASS, ingredients=8; warm-cache --verify → PASS, ingredients=8, all provenance remote. Prior warm-cache false-positive repro is fixed.
4. Lock untouched: git diff aa86aa27..3e5c657 -- kit.lock.json pins/ CHANGELOG.md is empty; stat shows only build/check-lock.py (4 lines) + tests/test_check_lock_remote.py (new).
5. Identity/hygiene: head commit author and committer both Mozi <mozi@askaconsult.com> (codename-only); message has no internal names.
Verdict: APPROVE — merge with a MERGE commit once gates are green on this head.
