AI-powered course material generator for educators.
Created by Ashley Reddick | Ranken Technical College, Information Technology Department
Instructor Lab Agent is a VS Code-based tool that uses Claude AI to generate complete, interactive course materials from your existing textbook content and test banks. It produces ready-to-use HTML deliverables that students open in any web browser: no LMS plugins, no hosting, no special software.
You provide your source material. The agent builds everything else.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| VS Code | Free code editor from Microsoft |
| Claude Code extension | Available in the VS Code extension marketplace |
| Claude subscription | Pro or Max plan required (provides the AI that generates content) |
| Node.js 18+ | JavaScript runtime used by the build scripts |
| Python 3.6+ | Used for attendance forms and Jenzabar LMS export |
-
Clone the repo:
git clone https://github.com/arreddick/instructor-lab-agent.git -
Open in VS Code:
code instructor-lab-agent -
Run the setup wizard in the VS Code terminal:
node scripts/setup-wizard.js -
Open the Claude Code panel and type
/build
The setup wizard creates your folder structure, validates your environment, and walks you through adding your first course. After that, the /build command is your starting point for generating any deliverable.

Add your content. Place your textbook files (PDF, DOCX, TXT, or MD) and test bank files into the appropriate course folders.
-
Run the converter. The setup wizard handles this initially. For new files added later, run
node scripts/convert-refs.jsto prepare them for the generator. -
Build. Type
/buildand follow the prompts. Choose what to build, choose the class, answer a few questions about the module and topic. The agent generates a complete, interactive HTML file. -
Review. Open the generated file in a browser to check the content. Use
/testfor structural validation and/qafor an AI quality review. -
Finalize. When you are satisfied, type
/final [filename]to move the file from the working folder to the final output folder.
The agent reads your source materials, cross-references test bank content to ensure exam coverage, and produces deliverables that follow a consistent design system with your institution's branding.
