selenwright-browsers

Docker images of Playwright browsers for Selenwright. These images are built for running browsers as remote Playwright services, not for running the test suite inside the same container.

If your CI job only needs npx playwright test inside Docker, use the official mcr.microsoft.com/playwright image. It is the right default for that workflow.

Use selenwright-browsers when you want browsers to be infrastructure:

  • the test runner lives outside the browser container
  • each container exposes one Playwright browser server over WebSocket
  • full images provide headed debugging with X11, VNC, and clipboard support
  • headless images keep CI browser nodes smaller and simpler
  • each browser is packaged separately, so Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, Chrome, and Edge can be scaled or replaced independently
  • containers can be health-checked and orchestrated in a grid-like browser pool

The images are based on the official Playwright image and add the remote-browser server layer, per-browser packaging, debug tooling, CI-oriented headless variants, and Selenwright metadata.

Published images are available on Docker Hub under selenwright.

Headless images (CI-optimized, no X11 stack)

Same Docker Hub repositories, -headless tag suffix. No Xvfb, VNC, or clipboard service — browser runs headless only.

Tags

Images are published for the latest two stable Playwright minor versions.

Each full image gets:

  • the full Playwright version tag, for example 1.58.0
  • the Playwright minor tag, for example 1.58
  • latest and latest-release for the newest discovered stable version

Each headless image gets the same tags with a -headless suffix: 1.58.0-headless, 1.58-headless, latest-headless, latest-release-headless.

Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit are pinned by the Playwright version tag. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge images pin the Playwright version, while the branded browser binary follows the current stable package installed by Playwright during the image build.

Playwright client and server versions must match by major and minor version. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge images use Playwright's chromium client.

Clipboard

The full image exposes a small HTTP clipboard helper on port 9090. Not available in headless images.

Downloads

Set PW_DOWNLOADS_PATH to control Playwright's download directory. Set SELENWRIGHT_DOWNLOADS_DIR to mirror completed downloads into a mounted directory. Both full and headless images support this feature.

Healthcheck

Images include a Docker healthcheck that waits for the Playwright server on 127.0.0.1:3000.

Headless images

PW_HEADLESS is hardcoded to true and cannot be changed. SCREEN_RESOLUTION, ENABLE_VNC, DISPLAY, DISPLAY_NUM, and all CLIPBOARD_* variables are not applicable.

Security

VNC starts without a password when ENABLE_VNC=true. Bind port 5900 only to trusted networks or keep it disabled in CI.
