Blog: correct the branch counts in yesterday's post, and add what the cross-reference showed - #6

…showed The published post said forty-one cached refs; it is forty — a symbolic HEAD pointer was counted as a branch. The "fourteen extinct" figure was right but the sentence implied it came from subtracting twenty-nine from the total, when it is a set difference: upstream also holds three branches the cache never fetched. The bigger correction is additive. Cross-referencing the cache against upstreams 35 open pull requests shows 23 come from contributor forks and cannot be preserved from here at all; of the 12 on upstream branches, 9 are cached and 7 of those are Dependabot plus 1 Copilot. The stalled-human-contribution pool this project offered a home to is one PR, not a queue. Appended as a visible correction rather than a silent edit. A correction to the post merged in #5, appended visibly rather than edited away — the site's whole argument is that corrections belong in public.
What was wrong
"Forty-one of them" — it is forty. My count included
refs/remotes/origin/HEAD, a symbolic pointer, not a branch. The arithmetic implied by the sentence. It read "Upstream now has twenty-nine heads, which means fourteen of those branches no longer exist anywhere else." Forty minus twenty-nine is eleven. The fourteen is a set difference, and it only works out that way because upstream also holds three branches the cache never fetched. The number was right; the reasoning shown to the reader was not.
Both also corrected on the issue thread, in the comment that produced them.
What the correction adds
Finishing the cross-reference turned up something more significant than the count, and it cuts against the project's own framing:
stoplightio/spectral, are not in the cache, and cannot be preserved from here by anyone but their authors. The post now says that plainly, including the sentence I think matters: the offer stands; the queue behind it does not exist.
