100 Signs of a Fool

From Samarth Ramdas Swami's Dasbodh, Dashak 2, Samas 1

The fool is not one who lacks knowledge, but one who lacks wisdom to apply it. These are the signs to recognize and avoid in ourselves.

1. अभ्यासावीण वाद करी - Argues without study or practice.
2. नेणतपणीं सांगे गोष्टि - Tells stories of things he does not know.
3. उपदेशी आपण भ्रष्ट - Preaches to others while being corrupt himself.
4. आपुला अवगुण न पाही - Does not see his own faults.
5. पराव्याचा अवगुण पाही - Only sees faults in others.
6. मागें उणें पुढें भरें - Speaks ill of others behind their back, praises to their face.
7. बोलिला बोल विसरे - Forgets his own words and promises.
8. केले उपकार विसरे - Forgets favors done for him.
9. परावें केले स्मरे - Remembers only what others did to him.
10. निंदा आवडे स्तुति नावडे - Loves to criticize, dislikes praise of others.
11. आपुली स्तुति आवडे - Loves his own praise.
12. क्रोधें न बोले धर्म - Does not speak of dharma when angry.
13. व्यसनें जडलीं परम - Is deeply addicted to vices.
14. नीतिन्याय सांडी - Abandons justice and ethics.
15. अनीतीसी दंडे - Punishes others without justice.
16. परपीडा जोडे - Finds joy in hurting others.
17. स्वार्थबुद्धी परम - Is extremely selfish.
18. परोपकार नेणे - Does not know how to help others.
19. आळसें प्रपंच बुडे - Lets his family life sink due to laziness.
20. द्रव्यलोभें प्राण सांडे - Risks his life out of greed for money.
21. विद्या नाहीं वैराग्य नाहीं - Has neither knowledge nor detachment.
22. भक्ती नाहीं ज्ञान नाहीं - Has neither devotion nor wisdom.
23. धैर्य नाहीं क्षमा नाहीं - Has neither courage nor forgiveness.
24. दया नाहीं शांति नाहीं - Has neither compassion nor peace.
25. सत्य नाहीं मृदुता नाहीं - Has neither truth nor gentleness.
26. विवेक नाहीं विचार नाहीं - Has neither discernment nor thought.
27. संतसंग नावडे - Dislikes the company of the wise.
28. दुर्जनसंग आवडे - Loves the company of the wicked.
29. काम क्रोध लोभ - Is filled with lust, anger, and greed.
30. मद मत्सर दंभ - Is filled with pride, envy, and hypocrisy.
31. आपुलें हित नेणे - Does not know what is good for himself.
32. परावें हित न साहे - Cannot tolerate the good of others.
33. थोरपण मिरवी - Flaunts false greatness.
34. लहानपण लपवी - Hides his own pettiness.
35. जुनें विसरे नवें धरी - Forgets the old, clings to the new without reason.
36. आपण न करी आणिकां करवी - Doesn't do work himself, makes others do it.
37. सांगितलें न करी - Doesn't do what he is told.
38. न सांगतां आवरी - Meddles without being asked.
39. हित सांगे तो वैरी - Thinks a well-wisher is an enemy.
40. अहित सांगे तो बरा - Thinks one who gives bad advice is good.
41. देवास न मानी - Does not respect God.
42. गुरूस न मानी - Does not respect his Guru.
43. वडिलांस न मानी - Does not respect his elders.
44. ब्राह्मणास न मानी - Does not respect the learned.
45. साधूस न मानी - Does not respect saints.
46. तीर्थास न मानी - Does not respect pilgrimage.
47. व्रतास न मानी - Does not respect vows.
48. शास्त्रास न मानी - Does not respect scriptures.
49. आपुल्या मतें चाले - Acts only according to his own whims.
50. लोकलाज न धरी - Has no shame before society.
51. पापास न भिये - Does not fear sin.
52. पुण्यास न जाये - Does not pursue virtue.
53. नीच संगती धरी - Keeps low company.
54. उत्तम संगती सांडि - Abandons noble company.
55. कुकर्मीं रत - Is engrossed in evil deeds.
56. सत्कर्मीं आळस - Is lazy in good deeds.
57. द्रव्यासाठीं लाचार - Is servile for the sake of money.
58. मानासाठीं लाचार - Is servile for the sake of honor.
59. आपुला दोष लपवी - Hides his own faults.
60. पराव्याचा दोष वाढवी - Exaggerates the faults of others.
61. न मिळे तरी चोरी - Steals if he doesn't get what he wants.
62. मागें पुढें न विचारी - Does not think of consequences.
63. आपणास शहाणा मानी - Considers himself clever.
64. इतरांस मूर्ख मानी - Considers others fools.
65. कळे तरी न करी - Even if he knows, he doesn't act.
66. न कळे तरी करी - Acts even when he doesn't know.
67. समयीं न बोले - Does not speak when needed.
68. असमयीं बडबडे - Babbles at the wrong time.
69. प्रश्न न कळे उत्तर देई - Gives answers without understanding the question.
70. आपणास सर्व कळे म्हणे - Claims to know everything.
71. विद्वानांचा मत्सर करी - Is jealous of the learned.
72. अज्ञान्याची संगती धरी - Keeps company of the ignorant.
73. थोरांचें उपेक्षा करी - Disrespects the great.
74. लहानांस छळी - Harasses the weak.
75. बलिष्ठापुढें नमे - Bows before the powerful.
76. दुर्बळास दंडे - Punishes the powerless.
77. खोटें बोले खरें मानी - Speaks lies and believes them as truth.
78. खरें बोले खोटें मानी - Hears truth and believes it to be a lie.
79. आपण नासे आणिकांस नासवी - Ruins himself and ruins others.
80. देखिलें तें हिरोन नेई - Steals whatever he sees.
81. परद्रव्य परस्री अभिलाषी - Covets others' wealth and wives.
82. नीतिनें न वागे - Does not conduct himself ethically.
83. अनीतिनें संपत्ति जोडे - Earns wealth through unethical means.
84. तेणें सुख न माने - Yet finds no happiness in it.
85. अखंड चिंता वाही - Constantly carries worry.
86. समाधान नाहीं - Has no contentment.
87. लोकिकीं नापसंत - Is disliked in worldly life.
88. पारमार्थिकीं नापसंत - Is disliked in spiritual life.
89. इहलोकीं दुःखी - Is miserable in this world.
90. परलोकीं दुःखी - Is miserable in the next.
91. जन्म वायां गेला - Wastes his entire birth.
92. मेल्यानंतर नरक - Goes to hell after death.
93. आपणास धन्य मानी - Still considers himself blessed.
94. ऐसा जो मूर्ख - Such a one is a fool.
95. त्याचें दर्शन घेऊं नये - One should not even see him.
96. त्याची संगती धरूं नये - One should not keep his company.
97. त्याचा शब्द ऐकूं नये - One should not listen to his words.
98. त्याचा विश्वास धरूं नये - One should not trust him.
99. तो मूर्खपणें नासला - He is ruined by his own foolishness.
100. आणिकांस नासवील - And he will ruin others too.
