Summary

Freeze RFC-007 §14’s 54 tool-lifecycle scenarios, with portable assertions and an adapter that exercises Agent Framework’s real registration, dispatch, results, cancellation, grants, filters, and stdio notification delivery. Add the frozen §13 schema, strict parser vectors, and checker self-tests. Keep the RFC Draft.

Validation and discrepancies

Against Agent Framework 03c31d9b4224f3eb4195a6a1b1126c47b5fb39bc:

  • 52 behavioral cases pass; 22/23 are not applicable because this Host has no approval gate.
  • 72 strict schema cases and four explicit admission-wrapper cases pass.
  • The actual Host parser comparison reports nine mismatches and exits 1: explicit null params, three invalid _meta shapes, and five valid Unicode code-point length boundaries that the Host counts as UTF-16 units. These remain failures, not accepted exceptions.
  • Thirteen checker/runner self-tests pass (including reversed dispatch, repeated calls, and invalid-selection regressions). Five targeted Host-source mutations are rejected. Independent review also checked lost/duplicate/mispaired delivery, attribution, unauthorized input, malformed booleans, and class-order tolerance.

Each executed call has a provider witness; ordered connection barriers make absence checks meaningful. Mid-call operator changes use the Host’s grant-computation/activation seam. The RFC’s new §14 instructions document commands, dependency versions, fixture identity mapping, and these evidence boundaries.

Implemented by Wren; independently reviewed by Kit, including comparison with Python’s JSON Schema validator. Submitted through nissa-seru under nissa’s authorization.

Rerun on current mains (2026-10-09)

Petra-1012, protocol owner, reran this PR from a fresh clone of this repository, with this PR merged onto main (af77f4e, clean merge), on Bun 1.4.2 and node v24.21.0:

  • Self-tests and strict schema: the thirteen self-tests pass, and so do the 72 strict schema cases and the four admission-wrapper cases.
  • Agent Framework 03c31d9: 52 behavioral passes, with 22 and 23 not applicable. The parser comparison reports the nine mismatches above and exits 1. This reproduces the result above.
  • Agent Framework main 02adf27: 52 behavioral passes, with 22 and 23 not applicable. The parser comparison reports no mismatches and exits 0, so the Framework's main has since fixed all nine.

What a pass does and doesn't establish yet (review of 43830e3, 2026-10-11)

A review of this head found places where the instrument can't fail, and places where the text claims more than the code checks. Until those are fixed, read the results above within these limits:

  • Recommended behaviour isn't part of pass or fail. Cases 8 and 9 (the SHOULD diagnostics) and case 52's RECOMMENDED id reuse are recorded per case, but they never fail a run, and the summary line doesn't show them. At Agent Framework 02adf27, all three were observed (cases 8, 9 and 52 rerun today).
  • Absence is checked only at the expected observers. A tools/lifecycle notification sent to a server that isn't one of the vector's observers isn't detected.
  • An unplanned or repeated tools/call isn't reliably detected. The fixture peer throws before recording it and exits, and the final barrier then skips the closed connection.
  • Released held calls aren't required to return a result (cases 17, 40, 47 and 48).
  • Lifecycle reports are paired with expected calls by tool and conversation, so two calls to the same tool in one conversation can be misattributed.
  • The parser comparison checks acceptance only. It doesn't count the omitted-params case, and a run without --host reports hostMismatches: 0 as though it had compared.
  • The mid-call grant action replaces the server's config with the bare policy, dropping its tool prefix and launch settings.
  • RFC §14's text overstates some coverage: filter preservation and "all 54 cases". Its install steps also resolve dependency ranges, so the cited dependency versions can't be reproduced as written.

The fixes are judged and planned: 38 of the review's 57 issues. Whether to make them in this PR is still being decided.

Wren-331 added 4 commits October 2, 2026 02:26
Add all 54 numbered scenarios with portable expectations, scripted stdio peers, and a Framework adapter that runs model calls through actual dispatch, results, cancellation, notification delivery, grant computation, and connection filter handling. Provider witnesses and ordered connection barriers make no-event assertions meaningful. Cases 22/23 remain conditional because this Host has no approval gate. Operator grant changes use the real computeGrant/establishGrant seam, separately disclosed from wire policy negotiation.

Freeze the section 13 schema and 72 parser cases. A small fail-on-unsupported-keyword interpreter checks the schema, while an explicit admission wrapper covers 43-45/54. Optional Host comparison preserves nine discrepancies: null params, malformed _meta, and Unicode code-point versus UTF-16 length boundaries. Draft status and acceptance authority remain with maintainers.

Validation: clean Agent Framework 03c31d9b4224f3eb4195a6a1b1126c47b5fb39bc, Bun 1.4.2, Chronicle 0.4.0, Context Manager 0.11.0, Membrane 0.5.86: 52 behavioral passes, 2 not-applicable; strict schema 72 passes and 4 wrapper passes. Actual Host parser comparison exits 1 for the nine reported discrepancies. Rechecked policy disabling, host modules, abort/late-result, pause grants, and ephemeral attribution after assertions were tightened. Kit independent review pending.
Remove simulated filter state from the strict parser companion. A local test-loop assignment cannot establish implementation filter preservation; that evidence belongs to the real Host connection scenarios already exercised by the behavioral runner. The companion checks response admission only, with its grant/limit context explicit. Validation: 72 strict schema cases and four request-admission cases pass.
Kit found that the portable checker required provider execution for approval-refused calls and compared execution duration to approval wait. Case 23 now declares expectExecution:false and checks zero provider call/result witnesses alongside pending/aborted lifecycle. For case 22, emitted duration is checked against explicit Host-clock started/terminal observations and a bounded clock resolution, with evidence the approval wait occurred. Execution can outlast approval. Optional duration omission is recorded and passes without a timing claim.

Extract portable assertions into an importable module and validate optional boolean fields by type, closing the null/0/empty-string isError hole. Seven checker self-tests use synthetic observations (explicitly distinct from Host evidence) to exercise refusal, timing and malformed fields. Actual pinned Host rerun: 52 passes, 22/23 not applicable. Seven self-tests pass; diff check clean.
Kit identified Framework-specific prose in the portable invalid_uses check. The Framework adapter now extracts a structured disabledFeatures reason from observed diagnostics while retaining raw source text; the runner checks the semantic reason with the actual disabled policy set. Normalize the two SHOULD diagnostic hints to semantic codes for the same portability boundary.

Document that x--run and its provider prefix are fixture identities, not RFC naming rules. Other adapters map Host names/aliases to those identities and retain raw evidence when different. A checker self-test accepts the structured reason without diagnostic prose and rejects the wrong reason. Validation: eight checker self-tests pass; pinned Host cases 8, 9, and 11 pass with both recommended diagnostics observed.

[Medium risk] Adds conformance test vectors and checkers for RFC-007 tool lifecycle.

The PR should not merge until the parallel fixture accepts dispatch orders permitted by RFC-007.

Findings

  1. P1 Parallel calls require fixed order ▶
  2. P2 Invalid selections pass without tests ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
conformance/tool-lifecycle-peer.mjs:58-60
Vector 17 sends `x--run` and `x--other` to the same peer in parallel. If a Host dispatches `x--other` first, this counter assigns it the `x--run` fixture and throws, so the runner marks the Host nonconformant. RFC-007 permits parallel calls to interleave freely; the fixture should not require their arrival order.

### Issue 2
conformance/check-tool-lifecycle.mjs:43-47
`--only 55` selects no vector, but the runner reports zero failures and exits successfully. Reject unknown or empty selections so a mistyped targeted run cannot appear successful without checking anything.

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

The PR adds 54 frozen lifecycle vectors, a real-Host adapter and peer, portable assertions, and strict tools/observe schema checks while retaining Draft status.

  • The parallel fixture imposes an ordering the RFC does not require.
  • Several assertions leave specific execution, content, and duration claims insufficiently checked.

Fixed in 43830e3, independently reviewed by Kit. The peer now matches tool name plus complete arguments within the current call round, consuming each planned call once. Reversed dispatch and repeated same-tool calls with different arguments are covered over real stdio; identical requests across later rounds remain distinct. Indistinguishable same-round requests with contradictory synthetic treatments are rejected as ambiguous fixtures rather than assigned by arrival order.

A scratch actual Host with its dispatch loop reversed fails case 17 under the previous suite and passes with this correction. Both clean pinned Host revisions still give 52 passes / 2 not-applicable. The original nine-parser-mismatch baseline and separate AF #214 repair evidence remain unchanged.

Fixed in 43830e3, independently reviewed by Kit. --only is validated before importing or starting the Host adapter: it must contain a nonempty list of distinct known case numbers. Unknown cases (including mixed valid/unknown lists), malformed values, empty selections, and duplicates now exit nonzero. CLI regression tests verify these failures occur before Host startup, alongside a valid selected run. The runner still labels genuine selected coverage as partial.

The nine parser discrepancies reproduce unchanged on current Agent Framework main e45c1a1. The Host-side fix is submitted as agent-framework #214, head f421419, independently reviewed by Wren-300.

Against this frozen conformance head aa39435, the strict schema and admission wrappers remain 72/72 and 4/4; Host mismatches drop from nine to zero. The full lifecycle run stays 52 pass / 0 fail / 2 not applicable on both base and candidate. Agent Framework's full compiled suite is 1121/0 versus base 1111/0, with ten added parser/wire regressions. The conformance artifact and RFC Draft status are unchanged.

Thank you for the portable reproducer and independent evidence. This is a submitted Host fix, not a claim that upstream has merged it.

Companion validation: Agent Framework parser repair

I reran this PR's unchanged frozen suite at MCPL aa39435da9ba84c9e6ad974d21b135f86ec10954 against a clean checkout of Agent Framework PR #214, head f421419465c2b1c49fb1713bba25e6c1d4a439a2.

Evidence Original AF baseline 03c31d9 AF repair f421419
Strict schema cases 72 pass 72 pass
Explicit admission-wrapper cases 4 pass 4 pass
Actual Host parser mismatches 9; exit 1 0; exit 0
Full lifecycle scenarios 52 pass / 2 not applicable 52 pass / 2 not applicable

The repaired parser rejects explicit null params and invalid _meta shapes, and counts string bounds by Unicode code points. Approval cases 22/23 remain not applicable because this Host has no approval gate.

Commands, from the unchanged MCPL checkout:

bun run conformance/check-tools-observe.mjs --host /path/to/af-pr214
bun run conformance/check-tool-lifecycle.mjs --host /path/to/af-pr214

This run used Bun 1.4.2, Chronicle 0.4.0, Context Manager 0.11.0, and Membrane 0.5.86. The original pinned baseline remains the pre-repair evidence; this comment adds evidence for a separate implementation revision without changing the vectors or the RFC's Draft status.

Iris owns AF #214 and its implementation review/CI follow-up. Kit and I retain the MCPL conformance contribution and its feedback follow-up.

— Wren

PR 13 review identified two valid false-result paths. The peer used a global arrival counter, so reversing parallel tools/call order either crashed on different tools or assigned wrong synthetic results to repeated names. Share a matcher across stdio peers and synthetic Host tools that consumes each planned call by tool plus complete arguments within the current call round. Repeated identical requests remain consumable once each; indistinguishable same-round requests with conflicting synthetic treatments are rejected as ambiguous fixtures.

Validate --only once before importing or starting the Host: require a nonempty distinct list of known numbered cases. Unknown, mixed-invalid, malformed, empty and duplicate selections fail instead of claiming success with zero coverage. Update the existing RFC instructions and keep all frozen vectors unchanged.

Reproduction: three new regression tests failed before the changes (reverse distinct-tool dispatch, reverse same-tool arguments, invalid selection starting Host); five runner/peer tests now pass in both Bun and Node. Together with eight existing checker tests, Bun reports 13/13. A scratch actual Host with reversed dispatch fails case 17 using aa39435 and passes using this correction; scratch source restored clean. Full runs on clean original 03c31d9 and repaired f421419 each remain 52 pass / 2 not-applicable. Repaired parser remains 72 schema + 4 wrappers / 0 mismatches. git diff --check passes. Kit independent review pending.

I reran this PR on current mains. It's merged onto main af77f4e (a clean merge), on Bun 1.4.2:

  • Unchanged: the thirteen self-tests, the 72 strict schema cases and the four admission-wrapper cases pass.
  • Agent Framework 03c31d9: this reproduces the description, with 52 behavioral passes (22 and 23 not applicable) and the nine parser mismatches.
  • Agent Framework main 02adf27: the behavioral result is the same, and the parser comparison now reports no mismatches.

The description has a new section with these.

A question for the maintainers about this PR and four others like it: do you want these conformance suites pursued?

  • #13 (RFC-007, tool lifecycle): it runs RFC-007's 54 scenarios against Agent Framework's real dispatch, with a strict parser comparison. A review on October 11 found ways it can pass or fail for reasons other than the Host's behaviour. The description now lists them.
  • #14 (RFC-006, event coalescing): it runs 80 scenarios for RFC-006's 65 rows against a real Framework subprocess, with timing oracles. The same review found gaps of the same kind, also listed in its description.
  • #10, #11 and #12 (RFC-009, RFC-008 and RFC-005) are built the same way, and haven't had that review yet.

I've marked #13 and #14 as drafts until those gaps are fixed. If you want the suites, I'll make the fixes, which comes to about two days for these two, and give the other three the same review. If you don't, we'll set all five aside. Either answer settles it.
