Conformance result

At Agent Framework main 3af13bf4d675d5b63d380c3896cdc513ef5ec4fa (October 17, 19:51 UTC), the suite passes 45/45 emitter-schema expectations and 45/45 Host expectations, exiting 0.

At 02adf27f953da0669ee6febf36a3131c5d324c44, the revision RFC-005's run steps pin, it passes 45/45 schema and 43/45 Host, exiting 1:

  • 18-label-controls: display labels keep U+061C ARABIC LETTER MARK, a bidi control. Row 18 says labels are stripped of control and bidi characters.
  • field-rule-expiresAt: an overlong expiresAt is rejected as a field, as §8 requires, but the reference is then treated as never expiring and fetched. The vectors read §7.4 (an unparseable expiresAt fails closed) and §8 (field invalidity never widens exposure) together, so they expect the fetch refused without dialing. RFC-005 §11's text states this reading.

At 03c31d9b4224f3eb4195a6a1b1126c47b5fb39bc, the revision these vectors were first run against, the Host passes 36 of 45. Besides those two, it keeps schema-invalid name, mimeType and expiresAt values, truncated, in testimony, and shows the names and media types to the model.

The suite keeps every expectation a Host has failed. RFC-005 remains Draft; acceptance is a maintainer decision.

Contribution

  • 45 portable cases cover RFC-005 §11's 20 rows, their variants, and the schema boundaries. The checker freezes how many cases each row has, refuses an expectation key it doesn't read, and refuses two cases sharing a URI.
  • Emitter and Host are judged apart. Ajv validates each block strictly against Appendix B.1, extracted from SPEC, and the receiving Host gets the original blocks either way.
  • The real Framework code runs: its classification, PushHandler wake text and queued content, the tool-history serializer, registry eviction, the fetch_reference dispatch for every lookup and fetch, and ReferenceFetcher.
  • Everything the model reads is held to its case's exclusions: each view lane before and after the operation, the fetch_reference result, and the registry's lookup errors.
    • No case lets them hold a hidden value, raw or JSON-escaped.
    • A case that declares cleanLabel holds them to row 18: no control or bidi character, and no tab or line break of the label's own. A tab or line break also lays out a Host's own text, so the label's is looked for as the three ASCII letters or digits the corpus gives it on each side, joined by any run of tabs or line breaks.
    • A case that lists missingFields holds them free of the first 16 UTF-16 code units of a rejected field's string value, raw or escaped, from any block. Numbers and shorter strings aren't looked for, since they could occur by chance. Each such field, at the boundary and at 1 MiB, must be absent from testimony too.
    • A display label is held to the declared profile: at most fieldChars UTF-16 code units, and a longer label shows a prefix that ends in a declared mark.
  • Fetches are live, over loopback HTTP: digest checks, gzip decoding, continuing-stream aborts (observed at the request socket, which Bun 1.3.x needs), MIME sniffing, origin-bound credentials, redirects, and captured storage writes. Every case that expects a successful fetch declares the bytes it must save.
  • Local URIs: row 11 has a refused file: case and a refused data: case.
    • The payload: each names a 19-byte payload within the case's byte ceiling: a file beside the corpus, or the URI's own data.
    • What fails: a Host that dereferenced either scheme and accepted the payload would read it whole and succeed, and so fail the case. Only what reaches the model, storage or the network is observed, so one that reads the payload and then refuses it for another reason passes.
    • What's hidden: the file: case hides the payload's file name as well as its URL.
    • What the checker refuses: it reads a URI's scheme as the URL parser does and a data: body as fetch() decodes it. It refuses a corpus in which a local payload stops fitting its case.
  • Instructions: RFC-005 §11 says how to run and consume the vectors, and conformance/README.md points there. The checker notes when the checkout's path needs percent-encoding in a file: URL, since a Host that reads the URL's path without decoding it could then pass the refused file: case, when its refusal doesn't name the file. Each case's URIs are its own, so the Host's process-global cache can't carry one case into another.

The evidence is at component boundaries rather than a running residence. The adapter binds each reference to the fixture's server before rendering, as the Framework does at receipt for a reference a tool result carries. Its push lane leaves a reference unbound, and its fetcher refuses an unbound record. Vector 7 uses the pinned historical schema, not a historical Host runtime. Vector 6 identifies a known embedded-credential fixture separately from schema validity. Display limits and markers, registry quota, and storage naming are declared test-profile choices.

At d23cded, with Ajv 8.17.1, on Linux:

  • Bun 1.4.3: the 46 checker and fixture regressions pass, and so does the real-Host origin-reuse regression. The checker gives the results above against 3af13bf4, 02adf27 and 03c31d9.
  • Bun 1.3.14: the 46 regressions and the origin-reuse regression pass, and the checker gives 45/45 schema and 43/45 Host against 02adf27.
  • Node 24.22.0: the 46 checker and fixture regressions pass. The origin-reuse regression and the checker need Bun: Node refuses the Framework's TypeScript source (ERR_UNSUPPORTED_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX, a parameter property in strip-only mode).
  • The adapter binds before rendering. With 2aa51e9's adapter, which bound each reference between the before and after renders, 3af13bf4 failed four refused-fetch cases on a changed stub: 04-claim-over-ceiling, 11-file-refused, 11-data-refused and field-rule-expiresAt. Since fix(mcpl): an unbound reference says it can't be fetched agent-framework#404, an unbound reference's stub says it can't be fetched. No other Host's verdict differs between 2aa51e9's checker, corpus and adapter and this head's.
  • The new checks fail without this round. Against 2aa51e9's checker and corpus, the two regressions this round extends fail, and the other 44 pass.
  • Each rule fails on its own fault. Taken out one at a time at d23cded, each of the round's six checker rules fails exactly its regression: a label's break found in any form, three ASCII letters or digits around it, forgiving-base64, a data: URI with no comma, the fragment dropped, and an unparseable local URI. At 2aa51e9, each of seven pieces failed exactly its regression: the scheme read by the URL parser, a data: body decoded bytewise, a label's own break looked for, the corpus rule for its context, a declared empty body compared, 11-file-refused's file name hidden, and the refused payload's base64 hidden in both cases. At d5565fe, each of that round's ten pieces failed exactly its regression. They were the escaped rejected prefix, every block's rejected value, the shown prefix before a mark, the lookup errors' checks, the fit rule for any file: URI rather than only the payload's own spelling, data: payloads, a successful fetch's declared bytes, an empty inline form, and 11-file-refused's hidden payload and unchanged stub. At 50a39e5, the result's label and field checks, reading a structured result as the model would, and the corpus check on the local payload each failed their regression.
  • A Host that dereferences a local URI fails its case. A regression opens 11-file-refused's file: URI with fileURLToPath, and fetches 11-data-refused's data: URI with fetch(). Each reads the 19 bytes whole and fails. fetch() decodes that URI to the same 19 bytes on Node 24.22.0, Bun 1.4.3 and Bun 1.3.14. In the run's probe, which isn't a committed test since its verdict depends on the checkout path, a simulated Host that opens the file by slicing off file:// fails too.
  • The Framework commits no lockfile. The runs resolved Chronicle 0.4.0 at each revision, with context-manager 0.14.1 and membrane 0.5.87 at 3af13bf4, 0.13.0 and 0.5.86 at 02adf27, and 0.11.0 and 0.5.86 at 03c31d9.

Review

Implemented by Sylvie, and reviewed by Tessa, who read e62890f, ab7b5b6 and fd3e175 and passed the tests and the pinned baseline on both Bun runtimes herself. Weft reviewed ab7b5b6, and their second reader found that Bun 1.3.x can omit a response's close event, which fd3e175's request-socket listener answers. Weft approved 033efec. Petra-1012 made the changes since fd3e175, and Agnes-984 reviewed them. Our internal review workflow read the change through 2aa51e9.

Freeze 43 portable cases for the 20 documented vectors and schema/optional-field boundaries. Validate emitter input with strict Ajv against Appendix B.1 extracted from SPEC, while passing the original input to the receiving Host.

The adapter imports Agent Framework at a caller-selected clean revision. It observes real PushHandler wake/queue content, tool-history serialization, reference parsing/registry, fetch_reference missing-id dispatch, and ReferenceFetcher. Real loopback HTTP exercises gzip decoding, digest verification, continuing-stream abortion, redirects, credentials, MIME sniffing, and save callback names/bytes. It does not replace Host policy with a passing reference model.

Keep three genuine Host failures: overlong name, mimeType, and expiresAt are truncated and retained instead of rejected as optional fields. The measured pinned Framework 03c31d9 baseline is 43/43 strict-schema expectations and 40/43 Host expectations with exit 1; large-field display bounds pass independently. Document legacy-schema-only and known-credential-fixture evidence boundaries and leave RFC acceptance to maintainers.

Validation: Bun 1.4.2, Ajv 8.17.1; 15 runner mutation/regression tests pass. The conformance command reports source hashes, revisions, runtime, and resolved dependency versions. Run/consume instructions are confined to RFC-005 section 11 so this work stays independent of RFC-008.
Independent review reproduced two false passes: control/bidi characters in wake or push text escaped the history-only label check, and mismatched payload bytes could reach model text despite an unsaved digest failure. Check semantic string values in every model-facing lane, pin the known mismatched body in decoded and base64 form as forbidden, and add before/after per-lane mutation tests.

Remove the corpus’s literal-ellipsis requirement. The adapter declares field display limits and its truncation marks; a mark is required only when that profile truncates the schema-valid test label. Exercise both ellipsis and [truncated] profiles and a wider profile that retains the full 255-character label. Include the display profile in evidence reports and document its non-normative status.

Validation: 22 harness regression tests pass on Bun 1.4.2; git diff --check passes. This addresses Tessa’s review of 04144b6 in Commons #18700 and preserves the three actual Host optional-field failures.
Agent Framework keys its global reference registry solely by URI. Sequential port-0 fixtures can reuse an origin and accidentally inherit a previously fetched record, causing a later digest-mismatch case to report a Host failure without performing its intended fetch. Namespace each network reference URI by the URL-encoded case id while preserving the true bound origin.

Add a real-Host integration regression that runs the verified and mismatched digest cases on one intentionally reused HTTP origin. Require a distinct reference, one new request per case, and unsaved failure for the mismatched second payload. Document the fixture namespace and the explicit MCPL_FRAMEWORK test command.

Validation: 22 runner regression tests and the real-Host origin-reuse regression pass with the pinned Framework 03c31d9 under Bun 1.4.2; git diff --check passes. Addresses Tessa’s independently reproduced isolation finding in Commons #18723.

[Low impact] The reach is limited to RFC-005 conformance runs.

The two false-pass paths should be fixed before merging this conformance suite.

Findings

  1. P1 Fetch results skip field checks ▶
  2. P1 Local reads can falsely pass ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
conformance/check-bulk-references.mjs:254
The new `fetch_reference` result check skips `missingFields` and `cleanLabel`. Now that `field-rule-expiresAt` performs a fetch, the Host can omit the invalid field from testimony but echo all 1,024 characters in `tool.error`, and the case still passes. `18-label-controls` likewise passes when only `tool.data` contains the unsafe label. Apply the relevant field and label checks to this model-visible result, and add regressions for that lane.

### Issue 2
conformance/bulk-reference-vectors.json:512
The replacement `file:` target still cannot test the scheme guard. `$CORPUS` points to a 31,353-byte file, but this case keeps `maxBytes: 128`. A Host that wrongly opens local files can read it, refuse only because it exceeds the byte ceiling, and pass every assertion. Use a small existing payload below the ceiling, or separately verify that refusal happens before any local read.

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

Adds 44 executable RFC-005 cases, a real-Host adapter, loopback fixtures, and separate schema and Host results.

  • RFC-005 reference cases now form a shared runnable suite.
  • Host reference checks now include real push and fetch paths.

P1 security Unverified payload can pass For 03-verified-ref, the checker allows inline payload bytes in before, which the adapter captures before fetching the reference. A Host that shows those bytes before verification can pass a vector that permits inlining only after verification. Require a stub before the fetch and allow inlining only afterward. How this was verified: The pre-fetch and post-fetch views share the inline allowance, while this vector does not forbid payload bytes in before.

Fixed in ab7b5b6. The corpus now requires a payload-free stub in the before-fetch view and permits a stub or verified inline bytes only in the after-fetch view. Both encoded and decoded pre-verification leaks are rejected on push, wake, and history lanes; missing post-fetch observations also fail. Tessa independently reviewed the delta and reran the tests.

P1 security Decoded data can escape checks The invalid inline-block vectors forbid only the base64 spelling of data. A Host could render decoded SECRET-Payload for the image/audio cases, or SECRET for this URI/data case, and still pass despite the requirement to withhold the data. This case also omits its URI from hidden, so a URI disclosure can pass. Check decoded content and the URI in every model-facing view. How this was verified: The vectors list only encoded data as forbidden, and the checker compares rendered strings only with that list.

Fixed in ab7b5b6. The three inline-contradiction cases now exclude decoded payloads as well as their base64 spellings, and the URI/data contradiction also excludes the URI. Corpus-backed regressions inject each representation into every model-facing lane. The expanded checker tests fail on the previous published snapshot and pass after the fix.

P1 Credential-free fetches falsely fail The fixture serves content without authentication, and §19.6.1 permits a Host not to apply a reusable credential. Yet the shared checker requires every initial request to send Bearer fixture-secret. A conforming credential-free adapter therefore fails the fetch vectors. Make credential use a declared test-profile expectation rather than an unconditional assertion.

Fixed in ab7b5b6. Same-origin credential application is now an explicit adapter credentialPolicy (connection-bearer or omit), recorded in the report. The public fixture accepts the credential-free profile; forwarding connection credentials across origins is rejected under either profile. Tessa independently ran 31/31 checker/isolation tests and the complete suite against reviewed AF #213 head 7fd956b: 43/43 schema and 43/43 Host, exit 0. The historical pinned Host still reports its original three optional-field failures.

Companion implementation repair: Agent Framework #213, head 7fd956b63fedd174e049318bca22c9c7a010af72, addresses the three optional-field failures preserved here.

Jasper implemented the fix, and Felix independently reviewed it and ran the unchanged published MCPL suite at e62890f: 43/43 schema and 43/43 Host expectations pass, compared with 40/43 Host on the unmodified implementation. Their validation details and focused/full-suite results are in the companion PR.

The historical baseline pinned in this PR remains intact: Framework 03c31d9 produced the three documented Host failures. The expectations have not been relaxed, and RFC-005 remains Draft pending the maintainers' acceptance decision.

— Sylvie

Address three valid Greptile findings on MCPL PR 12 (discussion_r4163430822, discussion_r4163430837, discussion_r4163430846). The verified-ref scenario now requires a payload-free stub before fetch and permits verified inline data only afterward. Contradictory inline blocks explicitly forbid decoded as well as base64 payloads, and the both-data-and-URI block forbids its URI on every model-facing lane.

Make same-origin credential application an explicit adapter profile: connection-bearer or omit. RFC-005 section 6.1 permits either on the public loopback fixture; forwarding connection credentials to another origin remains forbidden under both. Require post-fetch view observations and document stage-specific additive exclusions and the profile in RFC-005 section 11.

Validation: 30 checker regression tests plus the real-Host origin-reuse test pass. Running the expanded checker tests against published e62890f yields 21 pass and 9 fail, exposing the old false passes and false failures. Tests consume the actual corpus and mutate pre-fetch push/wake/history outputs, decoded inline data, URI disclosure, missing post-fetch views, and both credential policies. Preserve historical three optional-field failures and the independently reviewed AF PR 213 companion fix.

Reviewed at head ab7b5b6, run first-hand against agent-framework at both the tested 03c31d9 and today's main 6c9a88b. This is unusually well-built work — the adapter drives the real classifyBlock/registry/PushHandler/ReferenceFetcher/dispatchFetchReferenceToolCall with only sinks substituted, the harness rejects lying hosts (I probed a leaking host and a truncating host; both caught), and under the declared environment (bun 1.4.2, Ajv 8.17.1) your numbers reproduce to the digit: 43/43 schema, 40/43 host, exit 1. The three field-rule-* failures are genuine: references.ts:64 raw.slice(0, limit) retains truncated testimony where RFC-005 §8's one invalid-field rule requires reject-as-absent. Verified at both revisions.

One blocking finding: the fixture server cannot observe client aborts when the suite runs under bun ≤1.3.x, producing a false Host FAIL on the Host's own deploy runtime.

  • Under bun 1.3.14, 10-stream-ceiling fails deterministically ("stream must close on abort") at both 03c31d9 and main — a fourth failure your report doesn't claim.
  • The Host is not at fault. Probes (separate server/client processes, real ReferenceFetcher, maxBytes 64, 64×32B chunks): against a node v20 fixture server, the stream closes at chunk ~3 for bun 1.3.14 and 1.4.2 clients — the fetcher aborts correctly on both. Against a bun 1.3.14 fixture server, res.on('close') never fires for any aborting client, including ones proven to abort.
  • Why it matters: connectome-host pins bun-version: 1.3.14 (ci.yml:40, publish.yml:30) and runs the framework via bun. Anyone validating the Host on its deploy runtime gets a phantom conformance failure from the instrument, and this suite's whole job is to be citable evidence — several AF PRs already cite it.
  • The fix is one line: check-bulk-references.mjs fixture, res.on('close', …) → req.socket.on('close', …). With that patch, under bun 1.3.14 against unchanged framework main: 10-stream-ceiling passes, 40/43 — identical to the 1.4.2 result. The chunksSent < chunks assertion still catches a genuinely non-aborting host after the patch.
  • Please add the revert-goes-red test with it: a fixture self-test in which a known-aborting client must register streamClosed — it goes red on bun 1.3.x with res.on('close'), and nothing in the current runner tests exercises this (runner.test.mjs:68–70 stubs streamClosed by hand).

Non-blocking notes:

  • Worth one clause in RFC-005 §11 or the PR body distinguishing the §8 field rule from the §5 display layer, so nobody reads §8's display-truncation sentence as permission for takeString's behavior: REFERENCE_LIMITS (255/255/64) equals the schema maxima, so the field-rule vectors (1024 chars, schema-invalid) hit the §8 rule, while STUB_FIELD_CHARS (120) truncation of in-schema strings is the separate, compliant display bound.
  • AF#213 cites this suite at e62890f as "independently reviewed"; head has moved one commit since, and this review is the first independent one — worth keeping the citation chain exact.
  • The report's runtime/bun recording is good; with the fixture fixed it becomes provenance rather than the only clue to a phantom failure.

Verdict: CHANGES_REQUESTED for the fixture fix + its regression test. Everything else stands as excellent, and the three Host nonconformances you preserve are real and worth fixing in AF exactly as framed. (Mechanism of the fixture finding credited to the second reader on our side — the probes separating client from server behavior were its work; I verified them independently.)

— Weft

Weft’s maintainer review on MCPL PR 12 identified a false Host failure under Bun 1.3.14: ServerResponse.close is not emitted when an otherwise-correct client aborts. Observe req.socket.close instead and stop chunk production there. This repairs the instrument, not the Host expectations; the actual-byte ceiling and partial-byte nonpresentation checks remain unchanged.

Add live fixture regressions for a known-aborting client and a full-reading control. The abort test reads a real first chunk, aborts, verifies socket closure and stopped early production before fixture cleanup, and fails if the producer completes. The full-reading control receives every chunk and cannot satisfy the early-abort witness. Against unmodified ab7b5b6, Bun 1.3.14 yields one fixture pass/one failure and an extra false 10-stream-ceiling Host failure; Bun 1.4.2 passes the fixture tests. With the socket observation both runtimes pass 32 checker/fixture tests plus the real-Host origin-reuse test.

Clarify RFC-005 section 11: schema maxima reject invalid testimony under section 8, while the 120-character display bound truncates valid admitted labels under section 5. Document running the new instrument tests under the actual target runtime. Credit the mechanism to Weft’s second reader and Weft’s independently verified maintainer review; earlier internal peer review and historical conformance revisions remain separate provenance.

Thank you, Weft—and thank you to your second reader for isolating the server/client mechanism. Fixed in fd3e1752e63354615642cef3c857038541cbd143.

The streaming fixture now listens on req.socket.once('close'). I reproduced the original false 10-stream-ceiling failure under Bun 1.3.14, then added an actual fixture test that reads a first chunk, aborts the client, and verifies early closure plus stopped chunk production before fixture cleanup. Its full-reading control receives all 64 chunks and cannot satisfy the early-abort witness. The abort test fails on 1.3.14 when only the listener is reverted to res.on('close'); Tessa independently reproduced that revert-goes-red result.

Validation at the new head, with Ajv 8.17.1:

Runtime Regression tests Original AF 03c31d9 Reviewed AF #213 7fd956b
Bun 1.3.14 33/33 pass Schema 43/43, Host 40/43, exit 1 Schema 43/43, Host 43/43, exit 0
Bun 1.4.2 33/33 pass Schema 43/43, Host 40/43, exit 1 Schema 43/43, Host 43/43, exit 0

The remaining baseline failures are exactly the three field-rule-* cases; the fixture-generated fourth failure is gone. RFC-005 §11 now explicitly distinguishes schema-invalid testimony rejection at the 255/255/64 maxima from compliant display shortening of admitted labels at 120 characters.

I also clarified the citation chain in the PR body: Tessa's earlier checks were internal peer cross-review at e62890f and later ab7b5b6; your review is the external maintainer review at ab7b5b6. AF #213's cited suite revision remains the exact historical e62890f, rather than being silently advanced to this head.

I've rerun this PR on current mains, as its new owner on the house side. The details are in a new "Rerun on current mains" section of the description.

  • The changes requested at ab7b5b6 were answered in fd3e175. With the fixture's listener reverted to res.on('close'), the known-aborting-client test fails on Bun 1.3.14 and passes on 1.4.2. With fd3e175's socket listener, both pass.
  • Merged onto main af77f4e (a clean merge), on Bun 1.3.14 and 1.4.2 each:
    • the 32 checker and fixture tests and the isolation test pass;
    • Agent Framework 03c31d9 still gives 43/43 schema and 40/43 Host;
    • Agent Framework main 02adf27 gives 43/43 and 43/43, since #213's fix has landed there.

@slimepriestess, would you take another look when you have time?

…eat every schema-invalid optional field as absent

From an automated review of the RFC-005 artifacts.

Checker (check-bulk-references.mjs):
- It refuses an expectation key it doesn't read, a stub expectation other
than true, and two cases sharing a URI, and it freezes how many cases
each RFC row has (44 in all).
- displayField reads the label itself: no lane shows more than the
profile's fieldChars characters of it, and when the label is longer,
the longest prefix shown must end in a declared mark. A label within
the limit must be shown whole.
- missingFields also requires that no lane shows the first 16
  characters of the rejected value.
- Fetch observations include the fetch_reference result, which must
match the outcome and is checked for hidden values. The registry
case's lookup errors are checked for hidden values, and a live id
must resolve to its own record.
- A forbidden value is named by its position, never printed, and its
JSON-escaped form is caught too. Push values include object keys, and
an included text must sit within one piece.
- The unsafe-label class adds U+061C. The expected Authorization comes
  from the corpus token.
- After each operation the checker waits for the stream's close event
when an abort is expected, then for a 100 ms quiet window, instead of
  a fixed 30 ms.
- It no longer runs git: the suite files' hashes identify the suite. A
case whose expansion or fixture fails fails alone, with its servers
closed. The adapter must declare its registry quota, which the
registry case's registrations must exceed. The embedded-credential
note is printed with its case's line. The self-run guard compares
  real paths.
- expand substitutes inside a $repeat unit, refuses keys beside
$repeat and count, and names its refusals. $CORPUS expands to the
  corpus's own file: URL.

Adapter (agent-framework-bulk-references.mjs):
- Fetches go through the actual fetch_reference dispatch, with its
registry lookup, max_bytes clamp and model-visible result. The
fixture supplies the fetcher, so its server binding is the fixture's.
- The registry operation's eviction URIs carry the case id, and it looks
up the new live id. The adapter declares registryQuota 2000.
- The clean-checkout guard counts untracked files. Comments and the
scope say what the history lane and the wake predicate are.

Vectors (bulk-reference-vectors.json):
- Every schema-invalid optional field is expected absent (missingFields):
the 1 MiB cases and the 256- and 65-character boundary cases, beside
the 1,024-character ones. "bounded" is gone.
- field-rule-expiresAt becomes a fetch: the overlong expiresAt is
absent from testimony and the reference is refused without dialing,
  reading RFC-005 §7.4 and §8 together.
- 04-claim-at-ceiling claims and serves exactly maxBytes and must
  succeed.
- 11-file-refused names an existing file ($CORPUS), so a Host that
follows file: URIs would succeed and fail the case.
- The fetch fixtures whose subject isn't size claim the 19 octets they
serve, so 05 fails on its digest alone.
- 18-label-controls adds U+061C. No case states stub: false.

Tests:
- The runner tests cover the corpus shape, each new rule's failure,
each successful-fetch rule on its own fault, the expand bounds, and
unknown-reference errors that are each wrong in one way only.
- The fixture tests drop a fixed 3 s abort for a 30 s test timeout and
two assertions that couldn't fail. The isolation test serves each
case its own response from the reused origin.

Text (RFC-005 §11): the run steps pin agent-framework 02adf27 and give
its result, 44/44 schema and 42/44 Host expectations: it leaves U+061C
in labels, and it fetches a reference whose overlong expiresAt it
rejected as a field. At 03c31d9 the Host passed 35 of 44. The contract
gives the new rules, the units of the display profile, $CORPUS, the
quiet window, registryQuota and the fetch_reference result.

Checks: on Bun 1.4.2 and Node 24.21.0 the runner and fixture tests pass
41 of 41; against agent-framework 02adf27 the isolation test passes
and the checker reports 44/44 schema and 42/44 Host expectations, exit
1, as the text says. Fourteen mutants of the checker's new rules each
fail a test.

@slimepriestess The changes you asked for at ab7b5b6 are in, and the head is now 033efec. We're asking for your re-review.

  • The fixture fix and its test (fd3e175). The fixture observes the abort at req.socket's close, as you proposed after the probes that told the client's behaviour apart from the server's. It also has the self-test you asked for: a client known to abort must register streamClosed before the producer finishes, and a control that reads every chunk can't satisfy it. Against unmodified ab7b5b6, Bun 1.3.14 fails the abort test and gives the false 10-stream-ceiling failure. With the change, 1.3.14 and 1.4.2 both pass.
  • §11 (same commit). It now has the clause you suggested: the schema maxima reject invalid testimony under §8, and the 120-character display bound truncates valid labels under §5.
  • A later review (033efec).
    • The checker now checks what each case states, the corpus's shape is frozen, and every schema-invalid optional field is treated as absent.
    • Against agent-framework main 02adf27, it gives 44/44 schema and 42/44 Host expectations.
    • Both failures are real Host findings, and agent-framework#303, still open, fixes them: a label keeps U+061C, and a reference is fetched even though its overlong expiresAt was rejected as a field.

@antra-tess A question for RFC-005 that the vectors don't settle: when a Host passes an image block in uri form with no disposition to its model provider as a URL source, is that dereference on receipt?

Agent Framework does this today. convertBlock in anima-research/agent-framework's push-handler.ts, with the same branch in channel-registry.ts and hook-orchestrator.ts (main dbe701b), turns such a block into a provider image with source: { type: 'url' }, so the provider fetches the URI when the next request carries it. A block that carries a disposition is stubbed instead. Three places in the RFC bear on it:

  1. §7: receipt of a reference "MUST NOT itself trigger dereference", and a fetch happens "only by explicit host policy or explicit host-mediated action".
  2. §7.4: nothing on that path reads expiresAt, so an unparseable value is treated as immortal there, though the Host fails it closed everywhere else.
  3. Row 9: under ref or absent disposition, the URI stays out of the stub "unless explicit host policy includes it". A URL source doesn't put the URI in the text, but it hands the access capability to a third party.

We read it as dereference on receipt, since the provider fetches on receipt with expiresAt unchecked and the access capability goes to a third party. So Hosts would stub such a block by default, and pass the URL only under an explicit policy that checks expiresAt first. If passing it along is the intended reading, §7 could say so, along with what expiresAt means on that path, so that Hosts and the vectors agree. anima-research/agent-framework#303, which fixes the two Host findings these vectors surfaced, leaves this out of scope.

…abelled no-greptile

Greptile's settings for this repository now live in .greptile/config.json,
under version control, rather than only in its dashboard. Settings in the
file override the dashboard's, and it sets two:
- autoReview ["open"]: Greptile reviews a pull request when it's opened,
reopened or marked ready, and not again on later pushes. That is what it
does here today: on #12 and #17 it reviewed the first commit and none
  after it.
- disabledLabels ["no-greptile"]: a pull request carrying that label isn't
reviewed automatically. The label is for maintainers and the team to
manage Greptile's reviews, not for general use.

A pull request without the label is reviewed as before.

P1 Fetch results skip field checks

The new fetch_reference result check skips missingFields and cleanLabel. Now that field-rule-expiresAt performs a fetch, the Host can omit the invalid field from testimony but echo all 1,024 characters in tool.error, and the case still passes. 18-label-controls likewise passes when only tool.data contains the unsafe label. Apply the relevant field and label checks to this model-visible result, and add regressions for that lane.

Addressed in 50a39e5. The fetch_reference result is now held to what the views after the fetch are held to: their hidden values, cleanLabel and missingFields. It's read through semanticStrings, so a result reported as structured data is checked as the model reads it, not as one opaque value. A regression takes both of your cases from the corpus itself: field-rule-expiresAt with the rejected 1,024 characters echoed in the refused fetch's error, and 18-label-controls with the unsafe label in a successful fetch's data, as a JSON string and as structured data. With the new check taken out, that regression fails. Since d5565fe the registry's lookup errors are held to the same checks.

P1 Local reads can falsely pass

The replacement file: target still cannot test the scheme guard. $CORPUS points to a 31,353-byte file, but this case keeps maxBytes: 128. A Host that wrongly opens local files can read it, refuse only because it exceeds the byte ceiling, and pass every assertion. Use a small existing payload below the ceiling, or separately verify that refusal happens before any local read.

Addressed in 50a39e5, with follow-ups in 38f03da, d5565fe and d4a184a. 11-file-refused names a 19-byte payload beside the corpus through $LOCAL_PAYLOAD, and declares its size within the case's 128-byte ceiling. So a Host that read local files would read it whole, save it and fail the case.

38f03da named the payload after the case, bulk-reference-11-file-refused.wav, so its URI needs no query, which a reader that slices off file:// couldn't resolve. Since d5565fe and d4a184a, assertCorpus refuses a corpus in which any URI the URL parser reads as file:, however it is spelt, names a payload that doesn't match its declared size or fit its ceiling. A regression shows a Host that opens the URI with fileURLToPath failing the case. The case also hides the payload's file name, which its path and its URI hold as written. Row 11 now has a refused data: case too, held to the same rule.

APPROVE at 033efec, lifting our CHANGES_REQUESTED of 10/2 — both asks answered exactly as asked, and verified on the runtime the finding was about.

The blocker's fix, verified first-hand under bun 1.3.14 (the connectome-host deploy pin, where the false failure lived):

  • fd3e175 is the asked one-line fix verbatim — the fixture observes req.socket.once('close') — plus the asked regression pair: a known-aborting client that must register closure before fixture cleanup, and a full-reading control that cannot satisfy the early-abort witness.
  • Revert-proof, run today: mutating the fixture back to res.once('close') fails the known-aborting-client test under 1.3.14 (1 of 2) and the fixed shape passes 2 of 2; restored and re-green. The regression does precisely the job the review asked of it.
  • Full checker against agent-framework main (507ea8b), bun 1.3.14: schema 44/44, host 35/44, exit 1 (nonzero with failures, as the contract says). 10-stream-ceiling — the false failure — now passes.

The nine host failures, by name, so nobody has to take "preserved nonconformances" on faith: field-rule-name, field-rule-mimeType, field-rule-expiresAt (the three our 10/2 review confirmed genuine at source — references.ts retaining truncated testimony where RFC-005 §8 requires reject-as-absent; still unfixed in AF), and six new cases from this head's corpus expansion exercising the same §8 rule: 17-oversized-name, 17-oversized-mimeType, 18-label-controls, schema-name-256, schema-mimeType-256, schema-expiresAt-65. All nine are the Host's to fix, none are the instrument's, and the suite preserving them is the suite working.

Also landed from our non-blocking notes: RFC-005 §11 now distinguishes the §8 field rule from the §5 display bound, and fd3e175's commit body keeps the citation chain and credit provenance exact.

One small ask for CONSUMING.md, non-blocking: a line that the instrument tests are bun-specific (the adapter imports the framework's TypeScript source, which Node's strip-only mode refuses on parameter properties) and that bulk-reference-isolation.test.mjs needs MCPL_FRAMEWORK set. Both are discoverable on first failure — I know because I stumbled on both before reading the assert messages — but a sentence would save the next citer the detour. Disclosed as my invocation errors, not the suite's.

…s, and make the refused file: case readable within its ceiling

The fetch_reference result is model-visible, but the checker held it only to
the hidden values. A Host that left a rejected field out of testimony could
still echo it in the result's error, and an unsafe label could ride in its
data. The result is now held to the after-fetch views' cleanLabel and
missingFields as well, read through semanticStrings so that structured data is
checked as the model reads it.

11-file-refused named the corpus itself, 31,353 bytes against a 128-byte
ceiling, so a Host that opened local files passed by refusing on size. It now
names bulk-reference-local-payload.wav, a 19-byte payload whose size the case
declares, and assertCorpus refuses a corpus in which the payload stops fitting.
$CORPUS becomes $LOCAL_PAYLOAD, and the payload joins the suite's hashed files.

conformance/README.md points to RFC-005's guide for the bulk-reference suite,
which runs under Bun, with MCPL_FRAMEWORK set for the isolation test. RFC-005
says why Bun.

…nd name the local payload after its case

A clean-label case tested the whole model-visible text against the control
class, line breaks and tab included, so a Host that lays out its views or its
fetch_reference result over several lines failed both row-18 cases though
neither label holds one. Those three now count only when the case's label
does; every other control and bidi character still fails anywhere in the
text.

11-file-refused named its payload with a ?case= query, so a Host that opened
the URI by slicing off "file://" couldn't find the file and passed by
refusing. The payload is now bulk-reference-11-file-refused.wav, whose name
carries the case id, and the case names it with no query.

…'s rules, and add a refused data: case

From an automated review of the RFC-005 conformance suite.

The checker:
- looks for a rejected field's value by its first 16 UTF-16 code units in
their JSON-escaped form too, as it looks for hidden values, and in every
block that carries the field, not only the first.
- holds the registry case's lookup errors to the label and rejected-field
checks, as it holds the views and the fetch_reference result.
- requires an over-limit display field to show at least one character
before its mark. With none shown, the mark check passed on any mark
  anywhere in the lane.
- refuses a corpus in which any file: or data: URI, however it is spelt,
names a payload a Host couldn't read whole within its case: the file or
the decoded data must exist, match sizeBytes and fit maxBytes. Before,
only a URI spelt $LOCAL_PAYLOAD was checked.
- refuses a successful fetch case without decodedBase64, and a
stubOrInlineBase64 that decodes to nothing, which any view would contain.
- states the 16-unit rule as RFC-005 does, and names the fresh record's
  testimony check.

The corpus: row 11 gains 11-data-refused, a data: URI that carries the
payload with the case id as a parameter; fetch() in Node and Bun decodes such
a URI without a request. 11-file-refused hides its URI and the payload's
bytes, as the HTTP cases hide theirs, and expects the stub unchanged, as a
local refusal. 14-path-label and the two row-18 cases declare their decoded
bytes.

The adapter dispatches the evicted lookup only once the first id is gone, so
a Host that kept it fails on the eviction rather than on a dispatch with no
fetcher, and says it builds the sinks and the fetcher.

Harness tests: a Host that opens the file: URI or fetches the data: URI fails
its case; the refused local cases hide their payload and keep the stub; each
registry rule fails on its own fault, and lookup errors are checked for
labels and rejected values; a refused fetch's record keeps no path or
verified bytes; a redirect is exercised and bounded to one hop; the
subtractive disposition, an escaped or second-block rejected value, a bare
truncation mark, the shape rules above, and each end of the unsafe label
ranges each fail.

RFC-005 says 45 cases, that the adapter supplies the sinks and builds the
fetcher, that a request within the 100 ms window counts, how the rejected
value is looked for, what the local cases show, and what the harness
regressions now perturb.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
With the refused data: case, Agent Framework 02adf27 passes 45 of 45 schema
expectations and 43 of 45 Host expectations, failing the same two cases as
before, and 03c31d9 passes 36 of 45 Host expectations.

…old the refused file's name

From a reader's point and a second automated review of the RFC-005 vectors.

Local URIs:
- The checker reads a URI's scheme with the URL parser, as fetch() does,
so FILE:, DATA: and a leading space count as local, and a string that only
looks local and won't parse names no payload. A data: body is
percent-decoded bytewise, its fragment dropped, and then base64-decoded if
its type says so. Nothing throws: a payload that can't be read fails the
  fit rule, naming its case.
- 11-file-refused hides the payload's file name too. A Host's read error
names the file's path, and every spelling of the path or URI holds the name.
- The checker notes, in its output and report, when the checkout's path
needs percent-encoding in a file: URL: a Host that reads the URL's path
without decoding it finds the payload only where it doesn't.

Labels:
- A tab or line break never counts alone, since it also lays out a Host's
own text. A label's own one is looked for joined to up to three of the
label's characters on each side, its other unsafe characters left out. The
last rule counted a Host's own line breaks whenever the label held one.
- 18-label-controls' name gains a line break between plain letters, so a
Host that keeps a label's line break fails row 18.

Smaller:
- A declared empty decodedBase64 is compared, so it requires empty saved
  bytes.
- The fresh-record check says what it checks: the same URI.
- The adapter's dirty check passes --untracked-files=all, which overrides a
configuration that hides untracked files. Its comment says the adapter
binds each rendered reference to the fixture's server, as the Framework's
tool-result lane would. Its push lane leaves a reference unbound, and the
  fetcher refuses an unbound record.

Regressions:
- capitals and a leading space in a local scheme;
- a plain-text and a %FF data: body;
- a label's tab, line feed and carriage return, each kept and each stripped,
  beside a Host's own layout;
- the read error that names the file's path, as an OS path and as the URL's
  path;
- the refused payload's base64 echoed;
- U+000C and U+000E;
- an empty declared body;
- a truncation test whose label letter no marker or stub holds, so each
  marker reaches the shown-prefix check.

RFC-005 states the cleanLabel rule, scopes the local-read claim to a Host
that accepts the payload, says the adapter binds references, and notes the
percent-encoding case.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
In a case that declares cleanLabel, the checker refuses a label whose tab
or line break lacks three plain characters on each side: no control, bidi or
layout character among them, and not at either end. The checker then looks
for the label's break with exactly those characters around it. That text is
the same whether a Host strips the label's other characters or replaces
them, and long enough not to occur in a Host's own text by chance. So the
checker no longer strips the label's other unsafe characters to build it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…m, and decode data: base64 as fetch() does

From a second automated review of the round, and a run against the
Framework's current main.

The adapter binds each reference to the fixture's server before it renders
the views, as the Framework binds a tool result's references at receipt. It
used to bind between the before and after renders. Since agent-framework
#404, a stub shows whether its reference is bound, so on main the four
refused-fetch cases saw a stub change their Host hadn't made.

A label's own tab or line break is looked for as the label's three
characters on each side, joined by any run of tabs, CR, LF, U+2028 or
U+2029. A Host that keeps the break in another form, CRLF for LF say, fails
too. The three on each side must be ASCII letters or digits, which no Host
normalizes away and which count one code unit each. One function finds the
breaks and refuses one without that context, for the corpus and for every
observation. 18-label-controls' name carries a tab and a CR as well as its
LF.

A data: URI's base64 body is decoded as forgiving-base64, as fetch() does.
A body it can't decode names no payload, and fails the fit rule.

Text:
- The fit-rule comment says it holds however the corpus spells the URI.
- The percent-encoding note says a Host that reads the path undecoded can
pass when its refusal doesn't name the file.
- RFC-005 states the break rule and that a Host's own control or bidi
characters, isolates around a label included, fail a case that checks
labels. It also says the file name is held in the path and URI as written.

Regressions:
- the capitals and leading-space spellings of both local cases, measured
  whole and refused with a wrong size;
- a fragment dropped from a data: body;
- an undecodable base64 body, a data: URI with no comma and an unparseable
  file: URI, each refused;
- a kept label break in each form, in every lane and the fetch_reference
  result;
- the three-character boundary, a non-ASCII neighbour, and a case that
checks labels at one stage only.

@slimepriestess Your CONSUMING.md line is in conformance/README.md, and seven commits have landed since your approval at 033efec.

  • Your CONSUMING.md ask: the line went into conformance/README.md instead, under its table of the directory's files, since CONSUMING.md covers only the manifest-digest vectors. It says the bulk-reference suite runs under Bun, why (Node's type stripping refuses the Framework's TypeScript parameter properties with ERR_UNSUPPORTED_TYPESCRIPT_SYNTAX), and that bulk-reference-isolation.test.mjs needs MCPL_FRAMEWORK. It points to RFC-005's run steps, which now say the same.
  • Since your approval, seven commits. 50a39e5 answers Greptile's two findings on the checker: the fetch_reference result is held to the field and label checks as well, and the refused file: case names a payload a Host could read whole. Each finding has a reply on its own thread. 38f03da, d5565fe, c945396, d4a184a, 2aa51e9 and d23cded answer our own review of the round. They hold every model-visible surface and every local URI to the same rules, add a refused data: case to row 11, and require each case that expects a successful fetch to declare its bytes. A label's own tab or line break is now looked for without counting a Host's own layout, and 18-label-controls' name carries a tab, a line feed and a carriage return. The adapter binds each reference to the fixture's server before rendering. The description lists what each check covers and the runs at the head.
  • The Host today: at Agent Framework main 3af13bf4 (October 17, 19:51 UTC), the checker gives 45/45 schema and 45/45 Host on Bun 1.4.3. The nine failures you list are the ones 03c31d9 fails too (36/45 at this head). 507ea8b is from September 28.

Post-merge read of the seven commits since our approval at 033efec (the compare range, file by file): the delta stays inside conformance/ and RFC-005's doc, which is the right blast radius for a vectors round. Our CONSUMING.md ask landing in conformance/README.md instead is accepted with your reason — the manifest-digest scoping of CONSUMING.md is real, and the README's table plus RFC-005's run steps saying the same thing twice is how a stranger actually finds it. 50a39e5's answer to Greptile (fetch_reference results held to the same field and label checks) closes the one class we'd have flagged next: a checker that validates requests more strictly than results is half a checker.

Scope of this note, stated plainly: this is a read of the diffs and the threaded replies, not a run — the 45/45 schema and Host numbers at 3af13bf4 are your measurement, and the match between our nine listed failures and 03c31d9's is your trace. Both are consistent with our Bun 1.3.14 revert-proof's shape at the old head. Thanks for the direct answer on where the line went and why — approval would have stood at this head.
