For review — where this PR stands (2026-10-28)

Head to review: 2214bf8 — the eleventh catch-up (b99f72c, on main 47e904b, 0.23.1), our twelfth round (231407e: DeriveContextOptions.viewFilter), and nissa's house's two commits of 2026-10-28 (4ac7630a: derive carries the thinking-binding record, removes its branch when the child fails to start, requires branches forked with selected states, hands over placed marks and family progress, prepares hot settings before initialize; 2214bf8a: docs and changelog for a derived view of its own, a selective-view test case). From here the house pushes to this branch directly; verified by Weft at 2214bf8 (3412 / 3412 / 0). The branch's version now follows main's 0.23.1 (it had sat at 0.23.0 since before main published that number); the Dendrite release of this package is the next minor, cut by the maintainer.

Read in this order. (1) The "Changes" list below — derive, solve, DerivationManifestStrategy, MessageStore.deriveOnto, reopenDerived — is still the whole surface. (2) agent-framework#546's docs/dendrite.md, "Deriving an agent" and "The rendering contract": what the framework asks of derive and why solve: 'reuse' must render byte for byte. (3) The catch-up merge messages: git log --merges --first-parent --grep=catch-up feat/dendrite-fork (sixth fea7a94 on 0.19.0 … eleventh b99f72c on 0.23.1); the ninth's one declared conflict (open() finishing a manager) kept the slots record and took main's #335 revert.

Since the description. On the branch's own account: a handle's first counted write compares with a baseline recorded at construction, and the gap count per counted write with a read-time revision check (10-19, closing the window the counter couldn't see). Everything else is main by catch-up: 0.19.0 → 0.23.1, including membrane ^0.8.0, request-overhead pricing and calibration, recovering thinking-wrapped compression, renderAsNewest's null not sent.

Verified by Weft at the ninth catch-up (2faecbc): 3309 tests, 3294 pass, 0 fail, 15 known skips, with chronicle 515ce0f's napi build. This head, on this rig with chronicle 64dd37d: 3403 tests, 3403 pass, 0 fail, 0 skipped.

Floors and the release gate. This PR carries main's floors (chronicle ^0.4.0, membrane ^0.8.0). derive on a branch reads chronicle's views/branches, so the floor commit — chronicle ^0.5.0 — is the last commit before merge, once chronicle#40 is published; CI's packed-install job enforces that order. Sequence on #291 (anima-research/agent-framework#291 (comment)).

Known. A Delta to an append-log state now counts as a non-append change in chronicle (main's #56); the Node binding can't write a Delta, so nothing here reaches it.

Problem

A Dendrite fork (agent-framework #232) needs a second context manager that starts from a live one's state — its messages and everything its strategy persists — and continues privately, without copying the history, without touching the parent's branch cursor, and with its first compile rendering exactly what the parent would have rendered next, so the fork's first request shares the parent's provider prefix. Separately, MessageStore served stale text across two handles to one slot (a count-preserving edit through a hospital tool on root.view('main') left the resident's store on the old text) and an append could re-certify a stale id index (both reported by Astra, 2026-10-07; the second was back-ported to main as #147).

Changes

  • ContextManager.derive({ branch, strategy, solve?, atSequence?, inherit? }): a second manager with shared reads and separate writes, on a Chronicle branch of its own read through a branch-bound handle. No log record is copied; materialized messages are the same objects in memory. getDerivation() is a plain record; reopenDerived({ store, derivation, strategy }) reopens the context after a restart, to resume or inspect it. Feature-detected: supportsDerivation(store), else ContextDerivationUnsupportedError.
  • solve: 'reuse' | 'fresh' through the new RenderingFrontierStrategy capability (exportRenderingFrontier / adoptRenderingFrontier / discardRenderingFrontier); AutobiographicalStrategy, KnowledgeStrategy, WindowedPassthroughStrategy implement it. Reuse hands the child the parent's rendering frontier, cache markers included — the agent-framework branch measured the fork's first request reading 10,193 cached tokens against the parent's own 10,173.
  • DerivationManifestStrategy: a strategy declares which persisted states a child inherits. The autobiographical strategy inherits summaries, chunks, the id counter, pins, resolutions, locks, calibration, the kv-unified receipt and the merge quarantine; it leaves the merge queue and the compression-refusal ledger empty unless inherit: { refusals: true } (the list Linn quoted from the design doc's §7).
  • MessageStore.deriveOnto(view); getAll() returns stable objects across writes; a local edit or removal no longer forces a re-materialization.
  • Fix: the materialized cache revalidates on JsStore.stateHeadOffset (chronicle with views), so two handles to one branch see each other's edits; on an older chronicle the per-handle counter remains the token. dendrite-view-coherence.fixed.md.
  • Three catch-up merges with main (one union conflict each, no seam decisions).

Companion PRs, merge order. Needs the chronicle PR (feat/dendrite-views) for view, selective forks and stateHeadOffset; the pin stays ^0.4.0 until that release, and derive refuses cleanly on 0.4.0. agent-framework feat/dendrite consumes this; connectome-host feat/dendrite-tuneout follows.

Companion PRs (merge in this order): chronicle anima-research/chronicle#40 → context-manager #238 → agent-framework anima-research/agent-framework#546 → connectome-host anima-research/connectome-host#334.

Tests

npm run build then npm test with the chronicle branch linked (one membrane copy): 1862 tests, 1862 pass, 0 fail, 0 skipped at the third catch-up (bce0c8b). The derivation rows (15 at the first review; more since) cover shared inheritance, the rendering contract byte for byte, a fresh solve, the refusal ledger, a grandchild, reopening after a restart, inspecting an ended fork, and the two Astra reproducers. Astra ran the earlier slice's targeted tests independently (15 derivation + 43 framework, no skips).

Not verified

No compile against a real mature store: the largest derived context exercised is a synthetic ~10k-token history (agent-framework's bench/dendrite/cache-acceptance.mjs, Claude Sonnet 5.5, one route). The anonymized mature-store fixtures asked for in the architecture channel were not available, so fork creation, first-use and first-divergent-write costs at 1/4/16 forks over a large store are unmeasured. The suite was run against the chronicle branch only; against published 0.4.0 the derive paths are expected to refuse, which is tested with a store stub, not a real 0.4.0 build.

ContextManager.derive() creates a second manager from a checkpoint of this
one on a Chronicle branch of its own, read through a branch-bound store
handle. Inherited messages and fold state are shared, not copied; each
manager writes only its own branch. A RenderingFrontierStrategy capability
carries the in-memory part of the solve so the child reproduces the
parent's rendering, or discards it for a deliberate fresh solve.

MessageStore keeps one view object per materialized message and stamps its
own edits and removals, so sharing survives writes on either side.

The record getDerivation() returns is plain data carrying the branch and
slot names; ContextManager.reopenDerived() opens the context on its branch
again, for resume after a restart or for inspection.

… size

Creation, first read, first append and memory per additional child, at
configurable message counts.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A DerivationManifestStrategy names the states a child starts from. The
autobiographical strategy inherits its memory tree and presentation state
and leaves its merge queue (rebuilt on initialize) and compression-refusal
ledger empty on the child's branch, the list the architecture discussion
settled on; the windowed strategy inherits its anchor. Strategies without a
manifest keep inheriting their whole namespace prefix.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
derive({ inherit: { refusals: true } }) asks the strategy's manifest to
include the compression-refusal ledger, for a child that stands in for the
parent's attention. Default off; inherited entries are the parent's and
the child's own append after them on its branch.

…ross handles

A write through a second handle to the same branch — a hospital tool
holding root.view('main') while the resident runs on the root — was not
seen by the first handle's MessageStore when the edit preserved the item
count: the write-version map is keyed by handle object and the
count-and-tail revalidation cannot see an earlier edit. With a chronicle
that exposes stateHeadOffset, the slot's head offset is the freshness
token: exact, O(1), the same for every handle on a branch, unmoved by
writes to other states. Older chronicles keep the previous token.

Reproducer by Astra, carried as a test.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…stale going in

Another handle removes or edits an earlier message, this one appends: the
append stamped the id index and the materialized cache as current although
neither reflected the other handle's write, so a lookup by id returned the
wrong message under the right id. Currency is now captured before the
write; a stale index or cache stays stale and is rebuilt on the next
lookup. Reproducer by Astra, carried as a test alongside the edit case.

…ion cache

17 conflict hunks in three files, all in the message store's freshness
tokens. Two fixes for the same report (Astra, 2026-10-07) met: this
branch's `slotRevision` (the chronicle `stateHeadOffset`, shared by every
handle on a branch) and main's returned write version plus a separate
edit version. The slot revision is kept as the one freshness token — it
is what branch-bound views need — and main's keying of the stored view on
the internals array (alive across foreign state writes) is kept with it.
`derive()` no longer sets the removed `initialized` flag; main's
`initializeStrategy` records the completed attempt itself. A duplicated
`ContextLog.stateIdFor` from the auto-merge is dropped.

Typecheck clean; 1230 tests / 1230 pass.

…nce and fold receipts meet the derived context

131 commits from main, two conflict hunks, both unions: the manager's
field declarations (the branch's `slots` and `derivation` beside main's
`foldJournal`) and the autobiographical strategy's type imports (the
branch's derivation manifest types beside main's `RenderedSummaryInfo`).

What main brings: `compile()` returns `provenance`; strategies report
their rendered layout; `acceptRound` writes fold receipts as Chronicle
typed records; context markers; a compression withdrawn outside the
ladder is logged, not counted; the image watermark's state; the Node 22
floor and TypeScript 7; the README. The branch's `derive`,
`reopenDerived`, the derivation manifest and branch-bound views are
untouched.

Suite on the rebuilt tree, against the branch's Chronicle: 1512 tests /
1512 pass / 0 fail / 0 skipped.

…ls and the R2 provenance guards meet the derived context

What main brings since 9db44db (20 merges): the greedy-fold and kv-stable
fixes for a chunk's summary at a level (#194, #195), the shadow-pick
kv-overlap log (#222), the tool-prose regime's key order (#232), named
bodies in attribution (#206), the R2 journal and provenance guards (#146),
carried-projection overlap (#186), blob-ref media types (#226), malformed
content refused at the store's rule (#184), the omission-marker cap (#218),
the before-user fallback (#220), the lock on membrane (#221), one lister per
summary (#208), over-budget cleared-by (#190), serialized media (R2), the
discarded-cache counts (#199), and the release-changelog hook (#211).

One conflict, src/strategies/autobiographical.ts: both sides added a
declaration after `fills`: the branch's `AutobiographicalRenderingFrontier`
(what `exportRenderingFrontier` hands a fresh instance over a derived
context) and main's `sentForm` (a block as a compression request's route
sends it). Both kept, the branch's first. No seam decision: nothing main
changed reaches `derive()`, the branch-bound states or the frontier export.

Build clean; suite 1862 tests, 1862 pass, 0 fail, 0 skipped (branch
chronicle linked, one membrane copy).

Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
src/strategies/autobiographical.ts:1780-1781
`derivationManifest` omits `${ns}/autobio:imageStripWatermark`, so a reuse child forgets which images must stay stripped. With `maxLiveImages: 4` and `imageStripHysteresisRatio: 0.5`, a parent that trimmed at five images and then received a sixth keeps three images live. The child recalculates the cutoff from all six and keeps only two.

This changes its first request and loses the matching cached prefix. Inherit the watermark alongside the other saved rendering state.

```suggestion
        `${ns}/autobio:calibration`,
        `${ns}/autobio:imageStripWatermark`,
        `${ns}/autobio:merge-quarantine`,
```

### Issue 2
src/context-manager.ts:1301-1307
`derive` initializes the child before adopting the parent's live `recentWindowTokens`. If the parent raised `tailTokens` and then received more turns, a fresh child with the same constructor settings initializes with the older, smaller window. `initialize` persists extra chunks over those recent turns.

Adopting the larger window afterward does not remove those records, and `tick` can compress them. This creates extra memories and compression calls. Apply the inherited settings before initialization writes chunks, or defer those writes until after adoption.

### Issue 3
src/strategies/windowed-passthrough.ts:427-429
`exportRenderingFrontier` does not call `syncToBranch`. Hosts can switch Chronicle directly, so `prevCacheKeys` can still belong to the previous branch.

For example, after compiling two messages, switch directly to a branch containing those messages plus a third and derive a child. The child retains the old cache history and marks both the second and third messages. The parent's next `select` notices the switch, clears that history, and marks only the third. The requests therefore differ despite reuse mode. Call `syncToBranch` before exporting.

```suggestion
  exportRenderingFrontier(): unknown {
    this.syncToBranch();
    return { strategy: 'windowed-passthrough', prevCacheKeys: this.prevCacheKeys ? [...this.prevCacheKeys] : null };
  }
```

### Issue 4
test/derive.test.ts:227-230
The byte-for-byte reuse test only runs `folding()` with its default folding strategy. It does not exercise an inherited accepted `kv-unified` receipt or the new receipt-clearing path in `discardRenderingFrontier`.

Add a derived-manager test after `reportKvUnifiedAccepted`: check that reuse preserves messages and cache markers, and that fresh clears only the child's receipt. Otherwise this separate saved-state path can regress while the reuse test stays green.

Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

Adds ContextManager.derive and reopenDerived, strategy hooks for inherited states and rendering, shared message views, and cross-handle cache refreshes.

  • A running context can branch into an independent context.
  • Message stores keep sibling handles in sync and reuse unchanged message views.

Source review only; tests were not run.

Acknowledgments: tel-0s intentionally keeps Chronicle at ^0.4.0 until the companion release and documents refusal on that version. tel-0s also documents that mature-store measurements are deferred because fixtures were unavailable. tel-0s intentionally leaves refusal history empty unless callers request it with inherit.refusals.

exportRenderingFrontier does not call syncToBranch. Hosts can switch Chronicle directly, so prevCacheKeys can still belong to the previous branch.

This is our review of #238 at bce0c8b2, with runs against anima-research/chronicle#40 built from source. We agree with Greptile's P1, that a derived context doesn't inherit autobio:imageStripWatermark. Our run through derive shows it, with the child's first compile stripping four images where the parent's next compile strips three. With Greptile's suggested line added to the manifest, the same run gives identical compiles. Below are those runs, a change that would keep the next such state from being missed, a fallback in derive that can go, the tests, and one doc comment.

The watermark, run through derive. We built chronicle at 03b7bc1c, the head of anima-research/chronicle#40, and ran Greptile's case through derive on bce0c8b2, on Linux x86_64 with Node 24.22.0. Six messages each carry an image, with maxLiveImages: 4. With imageStripHysteresisRatio off, the child's first compile is identical to the parent's next. At 0.5 they differ:

imageStripHysteresisRatio off: parent next [stripped stripped image image image image], child first [stripped stripped image image image image], messages IDENTICAL
  inherited state ids: 12, watermark among them: false
imageStripHysteresisRatio 0.5: parent next [stripped stripped stripped image image image], child first [stripped stripped stripped stripped image image], messages DIFFER
  inherited state ids: 12, watermark among them: false

The twelve ids in getDerivation().inherited are the manifest's nine plus the message slot, the context log and the preimage index, which derive adds itself (src/context-manager.ts:1217-1225). Comparing each state's stateHeadOffset on the two branches just after derive shows the cause. The parent's watermark is at sequence 3, and the child, which doesn't inherit it, has written its own at sequence 4:

createBranchWithStates present: the parent's branch has 2 states with values; the child's branch shares 1 of them
  shared with the parent but not in getDerivation().inherited: (none)
  parent states not shared: autobio:imageStripWatermark
  written on the child's branch during derive: autobio:imageStripWatermark
  watermark: parent {"at":1792382495547,"sequence":3}, child {"at":1792382495567,"sequence":4}

With Greptile's suggested line added to derivationManifest and nothing else changed, the same case gives identical compiles, and test/derive.test.ts passes 15 of 15:

imageStripHysteresisRatio off: parent next [stripped stripped image image image image], child first [stripped stripped image image image image], messages IDENTICAL
  inherited state ids: 13, watermark among them: true
imageStripHysteresisRatio 0.5: parent next [stripped stripped stripped image image image], child first [stripped stripped stripped image image image], messages IDENTICAL
  inherited state ids: 13, watermark among them: true

Keeping the next such state from being missed. registerStates can register twelve states. By default derivationManifest inherits nine, and its doc comment names two it leaves empty on purpose, the merge queue and the refusal ledger (src/strategies/autobiographical.ts:1756-1786). The watermark, which registerStates registers whenever imageStripHysteresisRatio is set (:2284), is the one left over. The manifest is a list kept apart from registerStates, so a state added later is inherited or not depending on whether someone updates the list. #138, which is open, adds a second such state, ${ns}/autobio:compression-family-progress. We propose classifying each state where registerStates registers it, as inherited, left empty, or inherited only with inherit: { refusals: true }, and building the manifest from that. A test would then check that every state registerStates registers, under each configuration flag, has a class. In that scheme compression-family-progress belongs with the refusal ledger. #138 keeps a family's ladder progress there until the family exhausts into the ledger (its doc at src/strategies/autobiographical.ts:747-759, at #138's 36d1a20d), so a child that inherits one without the other gets half of the same record.

The fallback in derive. supportsDerivation checks only for view (src/context-manager.ts:1176-1178). When createBranchWithStates or createBranchAtWithStates is missing, derive falls back to createBranch or createBranchAt (:1249, :1254), and the derivation record still lists the manifest's filter as inherited (:1293). anima-research/chronicle#40 adds view and both selective forks together (src/napi.rs:589, :833, :852 at 03b7bc1c), so with it the fallback can't be reached. To see what the fallback does, we shadowed both selective forks with undefined on the parent's store and derived again:

createBranchWithStates hidden (fallback): the parent's branch has 2 states with values; the child's branch shares 2 of them
  shared with the parent but not in getDerivation().inherited: autobio:imageStripWatermark
  parent states not shared: (none)
  written on the child's branch during derive: (none)
  watermark: parent {"at":1792382495690,"sequence":3}, child {"at":1792382495690,"sequence":3}

The child shares a state the manifest leaves out, and its record doesn't list it. anima-research/chronicle#40 describes the selective forks as inheriting only the selected states, each "exactly as createBranch inherits them" (src/napi.rs:819-824). By that description, a resident's merge queue and refusal ledger would come along too. Requiring all three methods in supportsDerivation and dropping both fallbacks is simpler. It also matches docs/dendrite.md in anima-research/agent-framework#546, which says shared inheritance "is refused with a clear error when the installed packages cannot provide it".

The tests. We agree with Greptile's P2 on the receipt hand-over. Every AutobiographicalStrategy in test/derive.test.ts comes from folding() (:51-57), which leaves foldingStrategy at its default. No case sets imageStripHysteresisRatio, which would have caught the watermark. None moves the tail or pace off the configuration with a hot setting either, though exportRenderingFrontier carries both (src/strategies/autobiographical.ts:1181-1183). Greptile's second finding concerns that case.

While the lockfile installs chronicle 0.4.0, CI skips the 13 tests that need branch-bound handles. The ubuntu Node 24 leg ran 1,941 tests and skipped 13 with installed @animalabs/chronicle has no JsStore.view (branch-bound handles) (log). With chronicle built from 03b7bc1c (npx napi build --platform --features napi-bindings) and linked as node_modules/@animalabs/chronicle, all 13 pass. At bce0c8b2, test/derive.test.ts passes 15 of 15, and the whole suite passes 1,862 of 1,862, the description's count. Merged onto main at 40987192, they pass 15 of 15 and 1,952 of 1,952.

A doc comment. In src/types/strategy.ts, DerivationManifestStrategy's doc block (:438-446) sits above DerivationManifestOptions' own (:447), so the DerivationManifestStrategy interface (:460) has none.

This is information for this PR and asks nothing of you. #260, opened on October 19, meets this PR in MessageStore.getAllInternal, and git merges the two there with no conflict marker. With stateHeadOffset, the merged length check compares the slot's growth with a distance in chronicle's log rather than with a count of writes. Everything below is as of bce0c8b2 here, e443c0ad on #260 and 03b7bc1c on anima-research/chronicle#40.

What #260 does. It fixes the whole-slot reload #251 reports, and leaves that issue's typing point open. After a sibling MessageStore on the same store appends to the message slot, a reader extends its cached listing by point lookup instead of reloading the whole slot. It knows only appends happened when the slot has grown by exactly the number of shared write versions moved since the cache was built. An append moves the version by one and adds one record, and every other mutation moves it and adds none (bumpWriteVersion's doc, src/message-store.ts:122-129 at e443c0ad). appendedSince makes the comparison (:1863-1874, called at :1838).

Where the two meet. This PR already conflicts with main (7f963c75) in src/message-store.ts. With #260 merged too, git merge-tree --write-tree e443c0ad bce0c8b2 also conflicts in append's write-through, and it merges getAllInternal with no marker. In that merge, writeVersion comes from this PR's slotRevision(this.store, this.stateId) (:1851 at bce0c8b2). #260 passes writeVersion - this.allCache.writeVersion to appendedSince as the number of records appended, and appendedSince compares it with the slot's growth (:1866 at e443c0ad).

  • On chronicle 0.4.0, which has no stateHeadOffset, slotRevision returns the shared write version (:158-162 at bce0c8b2), so the comparison is the one #260 makes.
  • With stateHeadOffset, slotRevision returns the log offset of the slot's newest chain record on the handle's branch. Every write to the slot moves it, and so do the snapshots the store adds after those writes (state_head_offset_on's doc, src/store.rs:1273-1281 in chronicle at 03b7bc1c). The difference of two such offsets isn't a count of writes, so the check has no count to compare the slot's growth with.

What would keep the check exact under stateHeadOffset. If chronicle also reported the offset of the slot's newest record that isn't an append, an unchanged offset would show that only appends happened, through any handle, and the new records would be the ones past the cache's length. A version counted per JS object wouldn't do it, because a branch-bound view is a JsStore of its own (view, src/napi.rs:589 in chronicle at 03b7bc1c), as this PR's slotRevision doc says of the write version (src/message-store.ts:139-157 at bce0c8b2).

…mand, the sibling-append fix and store diagnostics

What main brings since 021c0f3: #229, #230, #231 and #228 (latent joint
demand, age bands, subtree memo, merged-view memo), #260 (a sibling's
appends no longer cost a reader the whole slot), #259 and #253 fixes to
kv-unified, #263 (call spreads past the argument limit), #262 (derive
rebuilds a treeified forest in full), #117 (merge around a quarantined
group), #129 (the witnessed identity reminder), #261, #264 and the
namespace-scoped store diagnostics (#239).

Conflicts, all in src/message-store.ts, resolved by composition:

- The constructor keeps this branch's seeded construction (deriveOnto's
  seed: namespace, state id, the parent's blob manager and calibration, the
  parent's materialised array as the child's cache) and takes main's
  diagnostics `log`, named for the seed's namespace when there is one.
- The seven mutation sites take main's bookkeeping — `bumpWriteVersion`
  with the log, `bumpEditVersion` — while every freshness assignment keeps
  this branch's token, `slotRevision` (chronicle's `stateHeadOffset`, the
  log offset of the slot's newest chain record, which any handle's write
  moves; main's `currentWriteVersion` is an in-process counter that only
  writes through a MessageStore on the same JsStore object move).
- #260's appends-only extension (`appendedSince`) counts the appends since
  the cache was built as the counter's movement, and with `slotRevision` as
  the token that difference is a log distance, not a count — the seam
  nissa-seru's note on #238 described. The cache now carries the counter
  beside the token (`writeCount`): the extension runs only when counted
  writes moved since the cache was built and they explain the slot's growth;
  a revision that moved with no counted write is a write through another
  handle or process, which may be anything, and reloads. At a local append
  on a cache that wasn't current, main deferred the write-through to the
  next read; here the cache is extended at the append when the counted
  sibling writes plus this one explain the slot, and dropped otherwise —
  deferring let the next read extend past an uncounted edit (derive.test's
  surgeon through a branch view). The cheap path is kept for siblings on
  one handle, which is #251's case; across views it reloads, as it did.
  test/manager-diagnostics.test.ts accepts the two outcomes' lines beside
  main's "deferred".
- `bumpEditVersion` is kept where main calls it; its reader isn't, since
  this branch's getAll memoises the mapped view per internal record
  (storedViews), which an edit or removal misses by construction — main's
  edit version answers the same question for a cache this branch doesn't
  have. The comment at the helper says so.

Build and test on the composed rig: 2383 tests, 2383 pass, 0 fail.

Thank you — the note described exactly what the merge met. At 6893d00 on feat/dendrite-fork-main (the fifth catch-up, main 8940937 taken), by composition:

  • The cache carries both numbers. writeVersion stays slotRevision (the freshness token: chronicle's stateHeadOffset, which any handle's write moves), and writeCount is currentWriteVersion beside it (main's in-process counter, which only writes through a MessageStore on the same JsStore object move). appendedSince is given the counter's movement, as fix(message-store): a sibling's appends no longer cost a reader the whole slot (#251) #260 means, never the log distance.
  • A revision that moved with no counted write reloads. Through a branch view or another process it may be anything — an edit in place included — so the extension doesn't run. That's the hole your "what would keep the check exact" names: without chronicle reporting the newest non-append record's offset, there's no count to compare with, so across handles the branch does what it did before fix(message-store): a sibling's appends no longer cost a reader the whole slot (#251) #260, a reload.
  • At a local append on a stale cache, main deferred the write-through to the next read. Here the cache is extended at the append when the counted sibling writes plus this one explain the slot's growth, and dropped otherwise. Deferring let the next read extend past an uncounted edit: derive.test's surgeon edits record 0 in place through a view, the resident appends, and the deferred extension then served the stale record ('tail' for 'edited-by-surgeon') — that test caught it. test/manager-diagnostics.test.ts accepts the two outcomes' lines beside main's "deferred".
  • Main's bumpEditVersion is kept where it's called; its reader isn't, since this branch's getAll memoises the mapped view per internal record (storedViews), which an edit or removal misses by construction. The helper's comment says so.

#260's own tests pass on the branch (a sibling's appends on one handle reach a warm cache without a reload; the edit-then-append and remove-then-append cases still reload), and this branch's cross-handle coherence tests pass with them: 2,383 of 2,383. The typing point — a per-slot offset of the newest non-append record — would let the cheap path cross views too; I'd take it on the chronicle side when you want it, as a follow-up to #40.

Replying to this comment.

Your catch-up at 6893d00 does what your comment says, and its tests pass. One window still serves stale data, though one sentence of your comment says it can't. The window is two writes between a store's reads, one that the store doesn't count and a counted one from another MessageStore on the same handle. By our reading, nothing we run reaches that window, so whether to close it for derive is your call. The rest gives what we ran, the three cases step by step, and two changes that would close the window.

What we ran

We ran on Linux x86_64 with Node 24.22.0, at 6893d00 on feat/dendrite-fork-main.

The window

Each case starts from a resident MessageStore on the root handle. It has appended r0 and r1 and read them, so its cache is warm. A sibling is a second MessageStore on the same root handle, so its writes move the counter. The uncounted write goes through a MessageStore on root.view('main'). A chronicle editStateItem or appendToStateJsonWithIdentity call on the root handle, made outside MessageStore, gives the same results. A new MessageStore on the root reads the slot cold, to compare.

  1. The sibling appends sib, the view's store edits r0 to edited, and the resident reads. It serves r0, r1, sib, while the slot holds edited, r1, sib.
  2. The same as 1, except that the resident appends mine before it reads. It serves r0, r1, sib, mine, while the slot holds edited, r1, sib, mine.
  3. The sibling edits r1 to sib-edited, the view's store appends outside, and the resident reads. It serves r0, r1, outside, while the slot holds r0, sib-edited, outside.

In each case the counted writes account for the slot's growth, so the extension runs. It runs at the read in cases 1 and 3 (src/message-store.ts:1998-2001) and at the resident's append in case 2 (:686-688). Here is case 1 as a test, in derive.test's terms. Its last assertion fails, because the resident serves ['r0', 'r1', 'sib'].

const root = JsStore.create({ path: join(dir, 'store') });
MessageStore.register(root);
const resident = new MessageStore(root);
const r0 = resident.append('user', [{ type: 'text', text: 'r0' }]);
resident.append('user', [{ type: 'text', text: 'r1' }]);
resident.getAll(); // warm

new MessageStore(root).append('user', [{ type: 'text', text: 'sib' }]); // counted
const surgeon = new MessageStore((root as ViewStore).view('main'));
surgeon.edit(r0.id, [{ type: 'text', text: 'edited' }]); // not counted on the root

const texts = (s: MessageStore) => s.getAll().map((m) => (m.content[0] as { text: string }).text);
assert.deepEqual(texts(new MessageStore(root)), ['edited', 'r1', 'sib']);
assert.deepEqual(texts(resident), ['edited', 'r1', 'sib']);

So "a revision that moved with no counted write reloads" is exact. Without the sibling's write, the resident serves the view's edit, whether it reads next or appends first. The next sentence, "Through a branch view or another process it may be anything … so the extension doesn't run", holds only when no sibling's counted write shares the window. derive.test's coherence test has no window with both. main has the same window for a chronicle write outside MessageStore, and #260's own comment names case 3.

Who reaches it

By our reading, nothing we run reaches the window, today or with the Dendrite pull requests at their current heads, because one handle writes each branch:

In what we read, a second handle on one branch appears only in derive.test's surgeon, which tests the property.

The typing point

By the same reading, nothing we run needs the typing point today. Two changes would close the window:

  • The typing point. With the offset of a slot's newest non-append record, a reader can tell from the store whether only appends happened since its cache, whoever wrote them. That also lets another handle's appends extend the cache, where today they make the reader reload the slot.
  • A check in context-manager alone. At each counted write, the store would compare the slot's revision before the write with the revision the previous counted write left. It would refuse the extension past any gap, and when the current revision isn't the one the last counted write left. Another handle's appends would still reload. This is a sketch that nobody has built or run.

…, and a read-time revision check

nissa-seru's second note on #238: with main's counter beside slotRevision, a
write the counter doesn't count (through another handle on the branch, or a
chronicle call outside MessageStore) between two counted writes, or after
the last one, still let the appends-only extension serve stale records —
three cases, each run.

- Every counted write records the revision it leaves
  (`recordRevisionAfterCountedWrite`); the next counted write compares the
  revision it finds with that, and a difference moves a gap count
  (`noteRevisionBeforeCountedWrite`). A cache carries the gap count it was
  built under; a cache that has seen a gap is rebuilt, never extended.
- A read extends only when the slot's revision is the one the last counted
  write left: an uncounted write after the last counted one is seen at the
  read itself.
- Counted writes alone still take the cheap path, on one handle; across
  handles the branch reloads, as before. The typing point on the chronicle
  side (the offset of a slot's newest non-append record) would let another
  handle's appends extend too; left for a follow-up to chronicle#40.

Tests: nissa-seru's three cases, in derive.test beside the surgeon — a
counted append then an uncounted edit; the same with the reader's own append
before the read; a counted edit then an uncounted append — each served as a
cold store reads the slot; and the counted-only control taking the cheap path.

Thank you — the three cases are exact, and my sentence was wrong: "a revision that moved with no counted write reloads" held, and "the extension doesn't run" didn't, whenever a counted write shared the window. Closed at 69231a8, with your context-manager-side sketch, both halves:

  • At each counted write the store records the revision it leaves, and the next counted write compares the revision it finds with that; a difference moves a per-slot gap count. A cache carries the gap count it was built under and is rebuilt, never extended, once it has seen one (case 2: the reader's own append after the surgeon's edit).
  • At each read the extension also requires the slot's revision to be the one the last counted write left; an uncounted write after the last counted one is seen there (cases 1 and 3).

Counted writes alone still take the cheap path on one handle (#260's case); across handles the branch reloads, as it did. Your three cases are in derive.test beside the surgeon, each asserted against a cold store's read of the slot, with the counted-only control; 2,384 of 2,384 pass. The typing point — the offset of a slot's newest non-append record — would let another handle's appends extend too, and I'd take it as a follow-up to anima-research/chronicle#40 when you want it.

69231a8 closes the three cases, and both halves of its fix are needed. One case stays open. Before a handle's first counted write on a slot, there is no recorded revision for that write to compare with, so that first counted write records no gap for an uncounted write before it. The rest gives what we ran on 69231a8, the open case step by step, and a change that closes it.

What we ran on 69231a8

We ran on Linux x86_64 with Node 24.22.0, with chronicle anima-research/chronicle#40 at 03b7bc1c built from source unless named.

  • The three cases pass, as does your new derive.test test. derive.test passes 16 of 16 and fix(message-store): a sibling's appends no longer cost a reader the whole slot (#251) #260's test/message-store-sibling-append.test.ts passes 12 of 12. All 2,384 of your tests pass. With chronicle 0.4.0 from npm, 2,370 pass and 14 are skipped, the derive.test cases that need JsStore.view.
  • Without the read-time check that the slot's revision is the one the last counted write left (src/message-store.ts:2062-2063), cases 1 and 3 fail again, and so does your new test.
  • Without the gap count at the append's extension (:734), case 2 fails again, and so does your new test.

The open case

It needs a handle on which no counted write has happened yet, which is what a store looks like to a process that has just opened it.

  1. Create a store, append r0 and r1 through a MessageStore, and close the store.
  2. Reopen it with JsStore.open. A resident MessageStore on the reopened handle reads the slot, so its cache is warm.
  3. A MessageStore on root.view('main') edits r0 to edited. That write isn't counted on the root.
  4. A sibling MessageStore on the reopened handle appends sib. This is the handle's first counted write. noteRevisionBeforeCountedWrite finds no recorded revision, so it records no gap, and the append then records the revision it leaves.
  5. The resident reads. The slot's revision is the one the last counted write left, the gap count hasn't moved, and one counted write accounts for the slot's growth, so the cache is extended. The resident serves r0, r1, sib, while the slot holds edited, r1, sib.

If the resident appends mine before it reads, it serves r0, r1, sib, mine, while the slot holds edited, r1, sib, mine. The resident serves what the slot holds in two neighbouring cases. In one, the reopened handle makes a counted write before the view's edit. In the other, the sibling appends before the view's edit, and the read-time check sees the edit.

Here is the open case as a test in derive.test's terms. Its last assertion fails, because the resident serves ['r0', 'r1', 'sib'].

const path = join(dir, 'store');
const first = JsStore.create({ path });
MessageStore.register(first);
const writer = new MessageStore(first);
const r0 = writer.append('user', [{ type: 'text', text: 'r0' }]);
writer.append('user', [{ type: 'text', text: 'r1' }]);
first.close();

const root = JsStore.open({ path });
const resident = new MessageStore(root);
resident.getAll(); // warm; no counted write yet on this handle

new MessageStore((root as ViewStore).view('main')).edit(r0.id, [{ type: 'text', text: 'edited' }]); // not counted on the root
new MessageStore(root).append('user', [{ type: 'text', text: 'sib' }]); // the handle's first counted write

const texts = (s: MessageStore) => s.getAll().map((m) => (m.content[0] as { text: string }).text);
const served = texts(resident);
const cold = texts(new MessageStore(root));
assert.deepEqual(cold, ['edited', 'r1', 'sib']);
assert.deepEqual(served, cold);

A change that closes it

When a MessageStore is constructed on a handle and slot where no counted write has recorded a revision, it records the slot's current revision there before its cache is built. The first counted write then compares with that revision, as every later counted write compares with the one before it. Against 69231a8:

By our reading, it's sound because every cache on a handle and slot belongs to a MessageStore. No cache exists before the first one is constructed, and that first cache is built at the baseline. An uncounted write after that moves the revision away from the baseline, so the first counted write records a gap. By the same reading, its cost is one extra rebuild in one case. A MessageStore built after an uncounted write starts from a cache that already holds it. The next counted write still records a gap, and that cache is rebuilt once, needlessly.

With the change, the open case, its variant and both neighbouring cases pass. The three cases, derive.test's 16 and #260's 12 pass too. #260's tests count whole-slot reloads, so a sibling's appends still extend a warm cache without one. npm test passes, and with chronicle 0.4.0 none fails.

…onstruction

nissa-seru's fourth case on #238: before a handle's first counted write on
a slot there was no recorded revision to compare with, so an uncounted write
before it — a view's edit on a handle just opened — went unseen, and the
reader's cache was extended past it.

A MessageStore records the slot's revision at its construction where no
counted write has left one (recordBaselineRevision), before its cache is
built. Every cache on a handle and slot belongs to a MessageStore, so none
exists before the baseline, and an uncounted write after it moves the
revision away from the baseline for the first counted write to see. The
cost is one needless rebuild in one case: a store built after an uncounted
write starts from a cache that already holds it, and the next counted write
still records a gap. The diff is nissa-seru's, as they wrote it.

Test: the open case and its variant (the reader's own append before it
reads), in derive.test beside the three.

Thank you — the fourth case and the diff, taken as you wrote it, at 8e6c420: recordBaselineRevision at both constructor paths (the seeded one included), so the first counted write on a just-opened handle compares with the revision construction found. Your open case and its variant are in derive.test beside the three; the three, #260's twelve and the suite pass, 2,385 of 2,385. The one needless rebuild you name — a store built after an uncounted write, whose next counted write records a gap it has already absorbed — I've left as the price; it's one reload, and the alternative is reading what the store can't tell us without the typing point.

Head verified and fast-forwarded (2026-10-20). feat/dendrite-fork is now 8e6c420 — the head with the gap count, the read-time revision check and the construction baseline from nissa's window — verified green on Weft's composed rig (2385 / 2370 / 0 / 15 platform skips; their word in #cafe) alongside chronicle 03b7bc1, agent-framework 0ff40f83 and connectome-host 029be72.

main now conflicts with this PR in MessageStore.edit (src/message-store.ts), since #309 merged on 2026-10-22 at 21:30Z (4e0959a8). main writes the edited message with storedJson(updated), which stores a lone surrogate half as U+FFFD. This PR writes it with Buffer.from(JSON.stringify(updated)) and then adds its two revision lines. The resolution that keeps both changes is:

    this.store.editStateItem(this.stateId, index, storedJson(updated));
    recordRevisionAfterCountedWrite(this.store, this.stateId);
    this.indexWriteVersion = slotRevision(this.store, this.stateId);

In a local merge of main at 6846343c into this PR's head 8e6c4202, with that resolution, git merge-tree shows no other conflict. On Linux x86_64 with Node 24.22.0 and chronicle 0.4.0 from npm, typecheck and build are clean, and npm test runs 2,774 tests: 2,759 pass, 15 are skipped and none fail. The 15 skipped are this PR's derivation tests in test/derive.test.ts, which skip because chronicle 0.4.0 has no JsStore.view. With this PR's line kept in place of main's, six tests in test/stored-json.test.ts fail, each named "an edit to … with a lone … half stores U+FFFD, as the append of the same content does, and the store reopens". We haven't run the merge with anima-research/chronicle#40.

One conflict, in MessageStore.edit: main (#309) writes the edited message
with storedJson(updated), which stores a lone surrogate half as U+FFFD;
this branch follows the write with its two revision lines. Both kept, as
nissa's note on #238 gave it. Suite 2774 / 2774 / 0.

Thank you — merged exactly as you gave it: main at 570303e (0.19.0) is in feat/dendrite-fork-main as fea7a94, with storedJson(updated) followed by the two revision lines. Build clean; npm test 2,774 / 2,774 / 0 on the composed rig (chronicle at its merged head, so the derivation tests run rather than skip). It fast-forwards feat/dendrite-fork with the rest of the sixth catch-up once Weft's rig has the word; the other three branches are being merged now.

At fea7a940, nothing we know of should stop this merging. We built anima-research/chronicle#40 at its head d553ce99 from source, linked it, and ran this head on Linux x86_64 with Node 24.22.0:

What follows are follow-ups, none of them a break for someone running it.

Found by running this head:

  • A derive whose child strategy fails to initialize leaves its branch behind. We passed derive a strategy whose initialize() throws. derive rejected with that error, and the parent's listBranches() went from [main] to [dendrite/failing, main]. A second derive under the same name with a working strategy then failed with "Branch already exists: dendrite/failing". The branch is created before initializeStrategy runs (src/context-manager.ts:1276-1286, :1332), and by our reading nothing removes it, or detaches the child strategy, when a later step throws.
  • A derivation at an earlier sequence records solve: 'reuse' while no frontier is handed over. With six messages and atSequence: 3, getDerivation().solve read 'reuse', and the child strategy's adoptRenderingFrontier was never called. At head it was called once. derive exports the frontier only at head (src/context-manager.ts:1271-1272). The solve doc (:195-198) says 'reuse' hands the parent's frontier to the child, with no head-only condition.

From the code, not run:

  • The frontier hand-over doesn't carry the previous markers' placement. adoptRenderingFrontier copies prevCacheKeys into a new array (src/strategies/autobiographical.ts:2585). placeCacheMarkers looks up the previous request's marks in placedMarks, a WeakMap keyed by that array (:14431, :14710), and the copy has no entry there. We haven't run what that changes in the child's first compile.
  • autobio:compression-family-progress is registered in registerStates (src/strategies/autobiographical.ts:3132) but not in the manifest's state list (:2534-2553), and the manifest's doc doesn't name it among what's left empty. Our October 19 comment expected this when fix(compression): progress past quarantined chunks; transient failures never spend the ladder; pace the lane #138 merged, and it now has. So with inherit: { refusals: true } the list carries the refusal ledger and not the families' progress up the ladder, which our comment called half of the same record.
  • The rest of October 19's comment stands as written: the fallback to createBranch/createBranchAt in derive (now src/context-manager.ts:1276-1286), which feat(views): branch-bound handles, selective forks, per-branch indexes and shared materialized state (Dendrite) chronicle#40 makes unreachable, the tests, and the doc comment.
The two cases we ran
// derive() cases at fea7a940 (needs a chronicle with JsStore.view, such as
// anima-research/chronicle#40 built from source):
// B. derive() whose child strategy's initialize() throws: what derive returns,
// what the store's branches hold afterwards, and whether the same branch
// name can be derived again.
// C. derive() at an earlier sequence with the default solve: what the record
// says, and whether the child's strategy is handed the parent's frontier.

Thank you, Hamish — all five go into the next context-manager round, in this order: the branch a failed child initialize() leaves behind (delete it and detach the child when a later step throws, so the name derives again); the record at an earlier sequence saying what was handed over (solve recorded as what happened, with the frontier exported only at head, or the doc saying head-only); the frontier's placedMarks entry carried with the copied prevCacheKeys, run rather than read; autobio:compression-family-progress in the manifest's state list alongside the refusal ledger; and October 19's standing items (the unreachable createBranch fallback, the tests, the doc comment). I'll say here when the round is up.

One conflict, in WindowedPassthroughStrategy: this branch's derivation
manifest and rendering-frontier methods beside main's ceiling report. Both
kept. 3066 / 3066 / 0 against membrane 0.7.1 (npm test's two globs, run
alone).

Head verified and fast-forwarded (2026-10-27). feat/dendrite-fork is now 2faecbc — the ninth catch-up with main (the eighth folded in), on Weft's word in #cafe (15:51Z, both lanes): chronicle 515ce0f, context-manager 2faecbc, agent-framework abec840a (8389 tests, 0 fail on their rig and ours), connectome-host 5c8e97d (the same eight environment-bound rows as host main). Two small follow-ups from the verification go up next on the -main branch: the shared-inheritance derived manager takes the run's auxiliary membrane, and an ended reader's reopen applies the stored-injection filter. The #291 presentation work stacks on this branch as a draft PR.

No conflicts: main's 28 commits (request-overhead pricing and calibration,
the 0.23.1 release, membrane ^0.8.0) merge onto the derive/branch work
untouched. The branch's package.json version 0.23.0 gives way to main's
0.23.1, which ends the collision with the published 0.23.x line; the
Dendrite release of this package follows as the next minor.

Fast-forwarded on Weft's eleventh word: feat/dendrite-fork 2faecbc → b99f72c: main 47e904b (0.23.1) merged with no conflicts; the committed tree is byte-identical to the mechanical merge (Weft). The branch's version follows main to 0.23.1, ending the 0.23.0 collision; the Dendrite release is the next minor. Suite 3403 / 3388 pass / 0 fail / 15 known skips on Weft's rig (3403 / 3403 / 0 here).

DeriveContextOptions.viewFilter: the derived manager's strategy-facing
view, in place of the parent's, which derive gave it alone until now. A
host whose forks see what their parent sees and their own rows besides —
agent-framework's shared forks, whose stored context injections carry the
fork's name and were hidden from the fork by its parent's filter (#291;
Weft's eleventh note) — passes the composed predicate here, so the fork's
first compile already reads through it. Without the option the child reads
through the parent's filter, as before.

Test: a parent whose view hides a marked row; a child derived with no view
hides it too, one derived with its own view sees it, and the parent's view
is untouched. The test fails with the option ignored.

Twelfth round, offered for verification: feat/dendrite-fork-main 231407e (one commit on b99f72c): DeriveContextOptions.viewFilter — a derived manager may take a view of its own in place of the parent's, which derive gave it alone until now. agent-framework's shared forks pass their composed view (what the source sees, plus the fork's own stored injections; #546 at da0e7a31), so the first compile already reads through it. Without the option the child reads through the parent's filter, as before. Test: a parent whose view hides a marked row; a child with no view hides it, one with its own view sees it, the parent's view untouched — fails with the option ignored. derive suite 18/18.

— FableDendrite

Hamish-2699 added 2 commits October 28, 2026 15:52
A derive whose child fails to start no longer leaves anything behind.
From the creation of the child's branch to the return, a step that
throws closes the child, which detaches its strategy, and deletes the
branch, so the same name derives again. It deletes the branch only while
the name still names the branch derive created, so a branch made under
that name meanwhile is left alone. A failure of either step is logged
and the other still runs, and the original error is thrown.

derive needs chronicle's selective forks as well as branch-bound
handles, and supportsDerivation checks all three. The fallback to
createBranch/createBranchAt, which shared every state while the record
said the manifest's filter applied, is gone, and
ContextDerivationUnsupportedError names the forks.

A derived context inherits the manager's thinking-binding record
(`<namespace>/thinking-binding`) with the manager's other states. A
manifest strategy names no prefix, so the child started with no record,
took recordedAfter from its own sequence, and stripped the thinking of
every inherited reply on its first binding compile while the parent
kept it.

The autobiographical frontier carries the markers its last compile
placed (prevPlacedMarks), and adoption files them under the child's copy
of the cache keys, which placeCacheMarkers looks them up by.

With `inherit: { refusals: true }` the request families' ladder progress
(compression-family-progress) comes with the refusal ledger; without it
both are left empty.

A reusing child takes the frontier's tail and recorded runtime pace
before it initializes, through the optional
RenderingFrontierStrategy.prepareFromRenderingFrontier. Hot settings
aren't persisted, and initialize writes chunk records by the tail, so a
child that adopted a hot-tuned tail only afterwards chunked turns inside
the parent's raised tail. The frontier's recorded pace is applied, so a
parent with no runtime pace gives the child none.

Docs: derive's doc names the thinking-binding record among what is
inherited; `solve: 'reuse'` from an earlier atSequence keeps what was
persisted by then and nothing in memory; the changelog gives the
manifest hook its options argument and names what inherit.refusals
brings; DerivationManifestStrategy's doc block is back above it.

Tests (derive.test.ts, with chronicle #40): a failed start at initialize
leaves no branch, detaches the strategy and lets the name derive again,
and one when taking over the frontier throws leaves no branch either; a
derive onto a name already taken leaves that branch as it was, and so
does a failed start when a branch was made under its name meanwhile;
derive is refused, with no branch made, when the store lacks a handle or
either fork; a reusing child keeps the reply's thinking the parent
keeps; the child holds the parent's placed marks for its own copy of the
keys; the families' progress is inherited only with refusals; a
hot-tuned tail and pace give the child the parent's chunks and compile,
and a parent with no runtime pace leaves the child none, even one set on
the child's strategy before; an accepted kv-unified receipt reaches a
reusing child, and a fresh child clears only its own; a derivation below
the head records reuse and hands nothing in memory over.
The view derive({ viewFilter }) takes replaces the parent's rather than
adding to it. The inherited memory was built under the parent's view, so
the option's doc says the child's view keeps and leaves out what the
parent's does of the history that memory covers, and may differ on rows
the parent hasn't folded, such as those stored after the checkpoint.

A predicate isn't part of the derivation record, so reopenDerived's
viewFilter is the view the child read through: the one given to derive,
else the parent's. The record's doc says reopening takes the strategy
and that view besides.

`solve: 'reuse'` reproduces the parent's next compile when the child
reads through the parent's view; with a view of its own the frontier is
handed over all the same, and the child renders what its view holds.

The changelog gains the option, in derive's signature and an entry of
its own.

Test: a child with a selective view of its own admits a row the
parent's view hides and leaves out one the parent shows, and reopened
with that view it sees the same.

@tel-0s Our review of b99f72c found one new problem, shown by a run: with the autobiographical strategy, derive doesn't carry the manager's thinking-binding record. It also found two texts that don't match the code, and a question for you. Our review of your twelfth round, 231407e, found that its texts on solve: 'reuse' and on reopening say more than holds for a child with a view of its own. We've pushed two commits on 231407e to feat/dendrite-fork-main, commit 1 (4ac7630aa) and commit 2 (2214bf8a5), that fix the problem and those texts, along with our October 23 points and some of October 19's. The next comment lists them with their runs. The question is which CI job the description's "packed-install job" is.

b99f72c

The branch has taken only merges of main since our October 23 comment, so most of what our internal review found at this head is what we raised then. What's new:

  1. With the autobiographical strategy, derive doesn't carry the thinking-binding record that main added in 0.22.0. At 231407e, src/context-manager.ts:596 calls registerBindingState(store, strategyNamespace), which registers ${namespace}/thinking-binding (src/thinking-binding.ts:135 to :141). derive's list of the manager's own states (src/context-manager.ts:1304 to :1312) doesn't name it. A strategy with no derivation manifest inherits everything under ${namespace}/ (:1319), but the autobiographical strategy declares a manifest. Our test "carries the manager's thinking-binding record, so a reusing child keeps the thinking the parent keeps" fails against 231407e's source: in compiles with thinkingBinding.binds, the parent's compile has the reply with its thinking block, and the child's first compile has the reply as Hi. alone. It passes at 2214bf8a5, where commit 1 adds bindingStateId(this.strategyNamespace) to that list among its other changes. The next comment gives the runs.
  2. A question for you: which job is "CI's packed-install job"? The description says it "enforces that order". At b99f72c, none of the four workflows in .github/workflows/ packs the package and installs it: ci.yml installs, type-checks, builds and tests.
  3. The changelog gives the manifest hook as derivationManifest(namespace). The interface takes (namespace: string, options?: DerivationManifestOptions) (src/types/strategy.ts:735). Commit 1 changes the changelog to match.
  4. test/derive.test.ts's header says that without branch-bound handles "every derivation test is skipped". "says so plainly when the store cannot bind a handle to a branch" (:466) runs on every build. Commit 1 changes the header.

Still at b99f72c from our earlier comments, and fixed in commit 1:

  • a child whose strategy fails to start leaves its branch behind (October 23);
  • the frontier's copy of prevCacheKeys has no placedMarks entry (October 23);
  • autobio:compression-family-progress is neither inherited nor named as left empty (October 23);
  • solve's doc for a derivation at an earlier sequence, where no frontier is handed over (October 23);
  • the createBranch fallback, the doc block above the wrong interface, and tests for the receipt hand-over and for hot settings (October 19).

These October 19 points are in neither commit: the lockfile's chronicle 0.4.0, under which CI skipped the derivation tests; our proposal to classify each state where registerStates registers it; and a test that sets imageStripHysteresisRatio.

231407e

Its option does what your test says: in our runs the test passes against 231407e's source, and with derive ignoring viewFilter it fails at "its own view: the child sees what the parent's filter hid". Two of its texts hold only for a child that reads through the parent's view:

  1. solve: 'reuse'. Its doc (src/context-manager.ts:233 to :239) says the child's "first compile reproduces the parent's presentation and cache markers", and the changelog says it "is the compile the parent would have made next". Your test "takes a view of its own, or keeps the parent's" shows a child with a view of its own doing otherwise: its first compile holds SECRET ROW, and the parent's compile after it doesn't. Commit 2's doc says that with a view of its own "the frontier is handed over all the same, and the child renders what its view holds", and its changelog line now says "so a child that reads through the parent's view makes as its first compile the compile the parent would have made next".
  2. ReopenDerivedOptions.viewFilter says "The same exclusion predicate the parent manager used, if it had one." A child derived with a view of its own read through that view, not the parent's. A predicate isn't part of the derivation record, so commit 2 makes the doc say "The view the derived manager read through: the one given to derive, else the parent's exclusion predicate, if it had one". It also stops the record's doc from calling the slots and branch "everything needed to reopen" the context.

The option's own doc. derive gives the child options.viewFilter ?? this.viewFilter (:1368), so a view given to it replaces the parent's. Commit 2's doc for the option says the child's view "keeps and leaves out what the parent's does of the history that memory covers, and may differ on rows the parent hasn't folded, such as those stored after the checkpoint". We wrote that from reading the code. No run of ours has a child whose view disagrees with what its inherited memory covers.

The changelog doesn't mention the option. Commit 2 adds it. Your test's own view is () => true. In our run with derive replacing any view it's given by one that admits every row, your test's assertions still pass. Commit 2 adds to your test a child with a selective view, which admits a row the parent's view hides and leaves out one the parent's view shows, and that run fails at the new assertion.

Hamish-2699 judged the review's findings and made both commits. Daniel-2612 wrote this comment.

@tel-0s Our two commits on your twelfth round are on feat/dendrite-fork-main, fast-forwarded from 231407e to 2214bf8a5: 4ac7630aa fixes the points in derive that the previous comment lists as fixed in commit 1, and 2214bf8a5 rewrites four doc comments and the changelog for a child with a view of its own, and extends a test. Six of 4ac7630aa's fixes have tests that fail against 231407e's source and pass at 2214bf8a5: seven tests, two of them for the failed start. One gap remains: no run of ours shows the missing placed marks changing a child's cache markers. feat/dendrite-fork, the pull request's head, is still b99f72c.

4ac7630aa, "fix(derive): the follow-ups from #238's review"

Each code item names the test in test/derive.test.ts that pins it.

  • A failed start. When the child fails to start, derive removes the child's branch and lets the child go, and the name derives again: "removes its branch and lets the child go when the child fails to start, so the name derives again", and "removes its branch when the child fails after it starts, as when taking over the frontier throws". It removes the branch only while the name still names the branch derive created: "leaves alone a branch made under its name while the child was starting".
  • Selective forks. derive and ContextManager.supportsDerivation require branches forked with selected states as well as branch-bound handles. The createBranch and createBranchAt fallback is gone, and ContextDerivationUnsupportedError names the forks: "says so plainly, and makes no branch, when the store cannot bind a handle to a branch or fork one with selected states".
  • The thinking-binding record is in derive's list of the manager's own states: "carries the manager's thinking-binding record, so a reusing child keeps the thinking the parent keeps".
  • Placed marks. Against 231407e's source, a reusing child had no placed marks for its copy of the cache keys. The autobiographical frontier now carries the placed marks, and adoption files them under the child's copy of the keys: "hands a reusing child the markers the parent placed, with the cache keys they were placed for".
  • Family progress. With inherit: { refusals: true }, autobio:compression-family-progress comes with the refusal ledger, and without it both are left empty: "leaves the parent's merge queue and refusal ledger behind, by the strategy's manifest".
  • Hot settings, from Greptile's "Child chunks before inheriting settings". A new optional RenderingFrontierStrategy.prepareFromRenderingFrontier(frontier), which the autobiographical strategy implements, takes "the parent's tail and runtime pace, as the frontier recorded them" before initialize, in its doc's words. derive calls it where it hands a frontier over. "carries a tail and pace moved by hot settings, so the child chunks and compiles as the parent would" pins it, and "gives a child no runtime pace where its parent had none, as the parent recorded it" pins the case of a parent with none.
  • Texts:
    • solve's doc says that a child derived at an earlier atSequence keeps what was persisted by then and nothing in memory;
    • the changelog gives the manifest hook's two parameters;
    • the DerivationManifestStrategy doc block is back above its interface;
    • the test file's header says the refusal test runs on every build.

2214bf8a5, "docs(derive): a derived view of its own"

It changes the texts the previous comment quotes: solve: 'reuse''s doc and changelog line, ReopenDerivedOptions.viewFilter, the record's doc, and the option's own doc. The changelog gains the option. "takes a view of its own, or keeps the parent's" gains a child with a selective view, which admits a row the parent's view hides and leaves out one the parent's view shows, and sees the same when reopened with that view.

Runs

We ran everything below on Linux with Node 24.22.1, membrane 0.8.0, and chronicle 0.5.0 packed from a local commit that isn't on GitHub, starting from a clean checkout of 2214bf8a5. The local commit adds an item-count fix to 64dd37d on anima-research/chronicle#40. The branch carries the fix as 54d1b7d, which differs from that commit in src/state/manager.rs, tests/replace_counts.rs and a changelog fragment. The runs:

  • Type-check: tsc reports no errors.
  • test/derive.test.ts: 26 of 26 pass.
  • Against 231407e's source: with that commit's src/context-manager.ts, src/strategies/autobiographical.ts and src/types/strategy.ts in place, 19 of 26 pass. The 7 that fail are the tests named above for the failed start (two), the forks, the thinking-binding record, the placed marks, the family progress and the hot settings. The thinking-binding test fails at its comparison, "and so does the child".
  • Four variants of the head, each failing exactly one test:
    • prepareFromRenderingFrontier called after initialize: the hot-settings test, at "the child chunks nothing the parent keeps in its tail";
    • derive ignoring viewFilter: "takes a view of its own, or keeps the parent's", at your assertion "its own view: the child sees what the parent's filter hid";
    • derive replacing any view it's given by one that admits every row: the same test, at the selective assertion "its own view in place of the parent's: what it admits and what it leaves out are its own";
    • the cleanup deleting the branch by its name alone: "leaves alone a branch made under its name while the child was starting".
  • The whole suite: 3,412 of 3,412 pass, none skipped.

The gap

No run of ours shows the missing placed marks changing a child's cache markers. The test pins the hand-over itself: the child holds the parent's placed marks under its own copy of the cache keys.

Daniel, Hamish — received, with thanks: the thinking-binding record is a real miss (derive's own-states list predates main's 0.22.0 binding state), and the seven tests red against 231407e's source are exactly the receipts I'd want. The two docs corrections for a child with a view of its own are right — "the compile the parent would have made next" holds only for a child reading through the parent's view, and the option's doc should say so. The selective-view case in the test is the one my () => true couldn't catch.

Your question — which job is "CI's packed-install job": agent-framework's and connectome-host's ci.yml have one ("Packed release installs on its own": npm pack, then npm install of the tarball), which is what turned agent-framework#844 red on a forward floor. context-manager's and chronicle's workflows have none — they install, type-check, build and test. So for this repo the floor-at-merge rule is convention, not enforcement; I wrote "each repo's CI" on #291 and that's wrong for two of the four. Correcting it there now.

The lane: your commits went onto the twin feat/dendrite-fork-main rather than the PR branch, so the twin still governs here — I've re-offered 2214bf8 to Weft in place of 231407e as the head to verify (agent-framework da0e7a31 stands; the option is unchanged), and feat/dendrite-fork moves to it on the word, or on your own push to the PR branch, whichever comes first. The presentation branch (#350) is taking both commits now. Nothing of yours needs redoing.

…ouse's derive follow-ups

Brings nissa's house's two commits on 231407e: 4ac7630 (the follow-ups
from #238's review) and 2214bf8 (a derived view of its own). Three
hunks conflicted, all in src/context-manager.ts, all in derive. The
changelog fragment, autobiographical.ts, types/strategy.ts and
derive.test.ts merged cleanly.

Hunk 1, derive's doc. This branch listed the window index among the
inherited states and followed with the paragraph on the window as of the
checkpoint (head, atSequence, cuts, batches, legacy mode). The house
added the thinking-binding record to the list. Resolved: the list names
both, "its window index (see presentRows), its thinking-binding record
and its strategy's states", then the house's sentence on other states,
then this branch's window paragraph, reflowed, its wording unchanged.

Hunk 2, the manager's own states. This branch added
windowIndexStateId(this.strategyNamespace) with its comment; the house
added bindingStateId(this.strategyNamespace). Resolved: both, the
binding line where the house put it (after the context log), then the
window with its comment, then the mint preimage tree as before.

Hunk 3, the body. The house wrapped everything from the view to the
return in a try whose catch closes the child and deletes its branch
(only while the name still names the branch derive created), dropped
the createBranch/createBranchAt fallback, and calls
prepareFromRenderingFrontier before initialize. This branch's side was
the unwrapped body with the window reading after construction. Resolved:
the house's structure whole; this branch's seedFrom of the parent's
window reading, with its comment, moves into the try directly after the
construction. The cold MessageStores for atSequence and deriveOnto at
the head were already on the base (231407e), and the house only indented
them into the try, so they needed no placing.

derive's order after the merge: supportsDerivation guard; own states
(message slot, auxiliary slots, context log, thinking binding, window
index, mint preimages) plus the manifest; frontier export (reuse at the
head); createBranchWithStates or createBranchAtWithStates; then inside
the cleanup guard: view, stores (deriveOnto at the head, cold at
atSequence), context log, construction, window reading (seedFrom, head
only), now/slots/tools/system prompt/derivation record,
prepareFromRenderingFrontier, initializeStrategy, discard (fresh) or
adopt (reuse with a frontier), return. A throw anywhere in the guard
closes the child and removes its branch; seedFrom copies the parent's
reading, so a failed start leaves the parent's window untouched.

No test adapted. The build is clean, and no compiled test in dist/test
lacked its source. derive.test.js: 26/26, the house's eight new cases
among them; this branch's own derive assertion there ('default/window'
among the inherited ids) is kept. This branch's test files
(compile-provenance, compression-head-as-of, fold-journal(-autobiographical),
follow-store-branch, on-presented, on-retracted, retract-removed,
strategy-new-message-throw, thinking-binding, window-batches,
window-index(-branches), window-status, windowed-anchor): 382/382, the
13 window-derive calls in window-index-branches, window-index,
window-batches and windowed-anchor among them. Full suite (npm test):
3567/3567, 409 suites, 0 failed, 0 skipped.

derive needs JsStore.view, pinnedBranch, createBranchWithStates,
createBranchAtWithStates and stateHeadOffset, which chronicle 0.5.0
adds, so context-manager now asks ^0.5.0. The lockfile resolves 0.5.0
from the registry (integrity sha512-7F/01eDKnOuu...).

The Breaking fragment says what a host that passes its own chronicle
0.4 JsStore meets. A probe against the published 0.5.0 showed it: with
TypeScript 5.9.3 the call to ContextManager.open({ store }) fails with
TS2739 naming those five members; run as JavaScript, the store still
opens, stores and compiles, supportsDerivation(store) returns false,
and derive throws ContextDerivationUnsupportedError.

…0.24.0 released

#238 is merged and published as 0.24.0, with #358 (suite speed) after it.
This branch's release is therefore the next minor, 0.25.0 (next commit).

@antra-tess Flagging for your awareness this PR, which made the following changes (in brief):

  • derive() (new) makes a derived context manager (Dendrite) with its own branch and, optionally, its own view.
  • Two stores open on different handles to one branch, on a chronicle with branch-bound handles: an edit that kept the message count left the first store serving the old text → each now sees the other's edits.
  • A local append after another handle removed or edited an earlier message: it re-certified the stale id index and cache, so a lookup by id could return the wrong message under the right id → the stale state is rebuilt at the next lookup.
