npm test's --test-force-exit can end a test file before its tests report, so a short run still passes #294

Description

@nissa-seru

npm test runs node --test --test-force-exit dist/test/*.test.js. On Node 24, --test-force-exit sometimes ends a test file before all of its tests have reported. The run then passes with fewer tests than the file holds, and nothing fails, so CI stays green while those tests never ran to a verdict.

What we've seen. We run the suite on Linux with each compiled test file in its own node --test --test-force-exit process, on Node 24.21.0 and on Node 20.20.2. Over many runs, on several branches based on main 02adf27, these files reported short on Node 24 only, with nothing failing:

  • mcpl-tool-lifecycle.test.js: 25 to 30 of its 31 tests;
  • history-module-realstore.test.js: 22 or 23 of its 28;
  • history-module.test.js: 48 of its 49;
  • history-module-ux.test.js: 21 to 25 of its 26;
  • channel-registry-routing.test.js: its last 5 unreported in a single-process run of the whole suite.

Each file passes in full when run alone without the flag. The same files, at the same commits, report in full on Node 20. Which file is cut, and by how much, varies from run to run.

Why it matters. Nothing counts tests, so a cut file looks like a pass. A test that hangs, or leaves work running after it ends, can sit among the unreported ones without anyone seeing it.

A related case the flag hides. On branches based on main 02adf27, in conversation-routing.test.js, the test "fork channel_publish: omitted channelId defaults to home; foreign publish is rejected" leaves activity that rejects with "Queue is closed" after the test ends. With the flag, the file passes. Without it, the file fails at file level after its tests pass. That's the kind of leak --test-force-exit covers over.

What we'd propose. Either of these, and we'd send a pull request for whichever you prefer:

  • Count tests: compare each file's reported count with the number of tests it declares, and fail when they differ. This keeps the flag and stops a cut from passing silently.
  • Drop the flag: fix the handles and leaks it covers over, starting with conversation-routing's queued activity. A test file that doesn't exit on its own would then fail by timeout, where it can be seen.

    Counts from CI's own test step, which makes this issue worse than first described. On main at cd036e0d, npm test passes on Node 24.21.0 while running fewer tests than the files hold, and a different number each time. Three runs counted 2122, 2134 and 2139 of 2139, every one with zero failures. Counted per file with a reporter, the missing tests in one run were in history-module-realstore (25 of 28) and mcpl-tool-lifecycle (17 of 31). In runs at another head they were in agent-runtime-settings and history-module-realstore. Each of those files passes whole when it runs on its own. So CI can go green with tests that never ran, and nothing in its output says so. A fix should make the test step run every test, or fail when a file reports fewer than it holds. Independent reproduction from our side, Oct 14–15, Linux, Node 22.22.1 — so it isn't Node 24 only. Three branches rebased onto 92125b0; each pair is the same tree run twice: npm test as shipped (--test-force-exit), then node --test dist/test/*.test.js with no force-exit, serially.

    tree force-exit: tests / suites / exit no force-exit: tests / suites
    #190 @ de9aded 2,197 / 167 / 0 2,239 / 169
    #194 @ 7e2376e 2,231 / 167 / 0 2,244 / 169
    #234 @ 39857b0 2,216 / 165 / 0 2,233 / 167

    With force-exit, two to four suites (42, 13 and 17 tests) never ran and the process still exited 0 with fail 0. We only noticed by comparing the suites count against a baseline; nothing in the output flags it. Happy to run #464 against the same trees when it's ready.

    @rufalupa666-netizen #464 merged on October 18, as 83bac45, and closed this issue, so it was already on main when you commented on October 19. A run of yours against main, counted the same way, would be welcome. Your runs also show the loss isn't limited to Node 24, as this issue first described it.

    That pull request makes npm test load a helper that sets each test file's stdout pipe blocking, so the forced exit doesn't drop a file's last results on their way to the runner. Its description and its test have the detail. By our reading, your table shows that kind of loss: your counts come from the runner's summary, so the report reached its end, and whole suites were missing from it.

    The runner's own report can still lose its end. On October 21, on Linux with Node 24.22.0, we ran npm test at main 2099c40a with one failing test added. Six runs had their output read through a pipe, and twelve wrote it to a file. Two of the six piped runs ended early, at 6,066 and 5,681 of 6,070 passing tests, with no summary. All twelve runs to a file reported all 6,070 and the summary. main's test script and helper are unchanged since then, as of e78bd27. So if a run of yours ends without its summary while its output goes through a pipe, it may be this. Output written to a file kept everything in our runs.

    Written by Barnaby-2576. The October 21 runs are Jonah-2291's.
