[companion] fix(chat): show tool-result images as cached previews - #83
andrebrait wants to merge 7 commits into
Conversation
History loads dropped tool-result images for a text placeholder with a wrong byte count, and nothing loaded them back. Send them as /api/media/<sha256> URLs instead, in history and in live frames, so no base64 reaches the browser. The route serves the image from omp's blob store (or omp-web's copy until omp writes it) and a 480px WebP preview generated once with sharp; the lightbox opens the full image.
Serve omp-web's copy until omp's in-place blob write is complete, sweep copies and previews daily, keep the base64 memo to 4 entries, rotate previews by EXIF, show the unavailable-image text for missing blobs, and serve buffers without copying. Tests cover traversal with a real decoy, partial blobs, preview reuse, EXIF and every rewritten event type.

Cache inline bytes while the omp blob is incomplete
When omp has created <blobs>/<hash> but is still writing it as this live frame arrives, this existence check skips the complete media copy. mediaFilePath() then has no copy size to compare and treats any existing blob as complete, so the media endpoint can return truncated bytes with a one-year immutable cache, leaving the image permanently broken for that browser even after the blob finishes. Compare the blob size with the decoded bytes, or retain the copy until the blob content is verified.

Fixed in 2a6bdc8: the live path now writes omp-web's copy unless omp's blob already has the image's full size, so the route keeps serving the complete copy while the blob is still being written. Covered by a new test in lib/media-route.test.mjs.

185-206: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low valueBound concurrent thumbnail generation for the same hash.
Several
?thumb=1requests for an uncached hash can arrive together, for example from many open tabs. Each request decodes the full image with sharp in parallel.writeAtomicusespid.Date.now()temp names, so two writes in the same millisecond can use the same temp path. OnerenameSyncthen fails with ENOENT. The thumbnail is still served in that case, so the effect is wasted CPU. Avoid immutable caching for thumbnail fallbacks
When createThumbnail() returns null because Sharp is unavailable or transiently fails, this branch serves the original image from the ?thumb=1 URL through image(), which applies a one-year immutable cache header. If thumbnail generation later becomes available, the same URL returns a WebP preview, but existing clients remain pinned to the full-size image and continue paying its decode-memory cost; return the fallback without immutable caching or redirect to the full-image URL.

Cap the recent-image cache by byte size
When tools emit several large inline images, this process-global map retains each complete base64 string until four other distinct images displace it. Because image size is unrestricted, a handful of screenshots can leave hundreds of megabytes live for the server's lifetime even after the rewritten events and requests are gone; enforce a byte budget or avoid retaining the full encoded strings as cache keys.

Fixed in 7865950: the memo now holds at most 16 MiB of base64 keys, oldest evicted first. Larger images are not memoized.
The base64 memo now holds at most 16 MiB of keys. A full image served for ?thumb=1 when no preview can be made is sent with no-cache, so a later WebP preview replaces it.

Revalidate cached hashes before returning
When an inline image has no completed omp blob, its media copy can be deleted after 30 days by a sweep triggered by a different image while the base64-to-hash entry remains in this process-local memo. If the same image is emitted again before that memo entry is evicted, this early return skips recreating the copy and /api/media/<hash> returns 404 for uncached clients. Recheck that either the blob or copy exists on a memo hit, and recreate the copy when neither does.

The memo now skips only decoding and hashing; a copy removed by the sweep is written again when the same image shows up.

Retry media lookup after concurrent cache removal
When mediaFilePath() selects the copy while omp's blob is incomplete, the asynchronous readFile allows another media write to run the daily sweep after the blob reaches full size; that sweep deletes the copy, so readIfPresent(file) can return null and this request responds 404 even though the completed blob is now available. Retry mediaFilePath(hash) after an ENOENT so the image does not remain broken until the UI is reloaded.

Fixed in 943ea1e: after an ENOENT the route looks the hash up once more, so a copy swept mid-request falls through to the completed blob.

Rewrite images embedded in subagent events
When a subagent runs an image-producing tool, subagent_event embeds the raw child event under payload.event, but this default branch leaves that nested tool_execution_update, tool_execution_end, or tool-result message_end untouched. Those frames therefore still send the complete base64 image over SSE—potentially repeatedly for accumulated updates—despite the new media-cache path; recursively rewrite the embedded event before emitting the outer frame.
