What type of PR is this?

  • documentation

What this PR does / why we need it:

docs/reference/architecture has no landing page. The README points at it
twice — "a control-plane operator and a per-node agent perform the CRIU and
cuda-checkpoint work; see [Architecture]", and in the docs index — and both
links render a bare file listing. The page that was supposed to explain how
Snapshot works has only ever existed as a placeholder, and when the multi-GPU
reference landed it turned the path into a directory, removing even that.

This adds docs/reference/architecture/README.md, written to be read end to
end in one sitting by an integrator or a new contributor:

  • Components — operator, CRD installer, node agent, PageBroker, restore
proxy, nsrestore, snapshotctl, with a component diagram. It makes the
central point explicit: the agent and the operator never call each other, and
every handoff is a Kubernetes object.
  • Resources — the three CRDs, who creates each, why PodSnapshotContent is
cluster-scoped, and that restore has no resource of its own.
  • Checkpoint flow — request, bind, claim, quiesce, capture, commit, with a
    sequence diagram.
  • Restore flow — the same four stages the benchmarks measure (agent setup,
CRIU restore, CUDA restore, wake/remap), with a sequence diagram, plus a short
section on the two compatibility gates.
  • Storage — the shared RWX volume, artifact addressing, the storeID
binding as the seam for a second backend, staging and restoreMode, and
    artifact lifetime.
  • Failures and retries — sticky terminal states, why a dead source pod is
not itself a failure, workqueue replay after an agent restart, and the gap
    that SNEP-394 addresses.
  • Security boundaries and a path-to-responsibility table for contributors.

Multi-GPU is linked to multi-gpu.md rather than duplicated.

Closes #653

How was this tested?

Documentation only — no code changes. Relative links were checked to resolve
from the new file's location, both Mermaid diagrams were rendered through
mermaid-cli to confirm they parse and read correctly, and
make verify-license-headers passes.

make check could not be completed locally: it stops at
pagebroker-check-generated because this machine's $GOBIN/protoc is a
Linux/x86-64 binary and cannot execute on an arm64 Mac. That is a local
toolchain problem unrelated to this change, which touches no generated code.

Special notes for your reviewer:

The content is drawn from the code rather than from the existing docs, so the
flows reflect what the agent and operator actually do today; the terminology
follows api.md, the workload contract and the restore pod contract so the
reference set stays consistent.

Does this PR introduce an API change?

NONE

  • Commits are signed off (git commit -s), per CONTRIBUTING.md
  • make check test passes locally — blocked by a local protoc toolchain problem, see above; make verify-license-headers passes

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added an architecture reference covering Snapshot components, capture and restore flows, compatibility checks, storage lifecycle, failure handling, security boundaries, and multi-GPU support.
    • Documented operational behavior, including capture and restore failures, artifact cleanup, recovery, and checks for confirming whether a capture completed.

The page the README points at twice was never written, and when the
multi-GPU reference landed it turned docs/reference/architecture into a
directory with no landing page, so both links now render a file listing.

Add that landing page: the components and how they hand off, the three
resources and who creates each, the checkpoint and restore flows with a
sequence diagram each, the storage model, failure and retry behaviour,
and the security boundaries. Multi-GPU is linked, not duplicated.

Walkthrough

Adds an architecture reference that describes Snapshot’s components, resources, capture and restore flows, storage lifecycle, failure handling, security boundaries, multi-GPU support, and source-tree layout.

Changes

Snapshot architecture reference

Layer / File(s) Summary

The reference is broadly usable, but these two inaccuracies can mislead integrators and operators and should be corrected.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #653 requests an architecture reference for integrators and contributors. The new docs/reference/architecture/README.md covers component responsibilities, Kubernetes-object handoffs, all three CRDs, the nvidia.com/restore-from trigger, checkpoint flow, the four restore stages, compatibility gates, shared-volume storage, object-storage extension points, artifact lifetime, failure and retry behavior, security boundaries, and diagrams. It links to multi-gpu.md instead of duplicating the multi-GPU reference. The reported link checks and Mermaid rendering checks support the documentation implementation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The pull request adds only the architecture reference requested by issue #653. The component, storage, failure, security, source-tree, and multi-GPU sections support that reference. Links to proposals and existing references provide context without adding unrelated implementation or API changes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Breaking Api Changes

Explanation

PASS: The reviewed range changes only docs/reference/architecture/README.md (+304 lines). No files under api/** changed, so the pull request introduces no exported-field, JSON-tag, optional/default-marker, or XValidation immutability changes.

Full details: Rbac Least Privilege

Explanation

PASS — The pull request changes only docs/reference/architecture/README.md. The authoritative diff contains no kubebuilder RBAC marker and no Helm RBAC manifest change. Therefore, it introduces no wildcard verbs or resources.

Review comments at @docs/reference/architecture/README.md:
- Line 48: Update the architecture diagram around the caller-to-op arrow so
PodSnapshot and SnapshotJob follow the CRD path through the operator, while
restore-from requests follow a separate restore-pod path through Kubernetes to
the node agent.
- Around line 165-166: Update the restore-failure description in “A pod gets
exactly one restore” to say the agent kills the placeholder only when it
successfully resolves the PID; otherwise, it signals failure by writing the
restore-failed sentinel through the host path without killing the placeholder.
