feat(agent): name the step a checkpoint or restore failure came from - #587
A restore failure reached the Pod condition and the agent log as a bare cause with nothing saying which part of the flow produced it. Restore collapsed every failure into one reason and a message, and the controller logged the error without a key a reader could filter on.
Add Step and StepError in the executor. Every return in Restore and Checkpoint now carries the step it came from, rendered as while <step>: <cause>. Unwrap keeps the cause visible to errors. Is and errors. As, so the incompatibility, cleanup and source-kill checks are unchanged.
Log the failing step as a structured step key on the restore and checkpoint failure lines.
A PageBroker commit failure after a successful restore was only logged. It now rides in the returned cleanup error, which the controller already logs and reports as a RestoreCleanupFailed warning before completing the restore.
Join a failed GPU release into the cleanup error instead of building a second wrapper, so the text no longer repeats itself.
Example condition message:
Restore failed for all 1 destination container(s) from PodSnapshot vllm-snapshot: main: while running nsrestore: nsenter could not start nsrestore inside the placeholder (exit 127, executable not found): nsenter: failed to execute /proc/self/fd/4: No such file or directory
Surfacing only. No flow changes: commit is attempted once as before with the client's existing retry, the deferred abort still runs, the placeholder kill and sentinel writes are untouched, and the restore still completes after a commit failure. No condition reasons change, so the operator and the end-to-end suite are untouched.
go test ./... for the agent module on Linux in the golang:1.27.2 container: all packages pass.
New tests: StepError rendering, unwrapping and StepOf on joined and cleanup errors; the step named for a missing artifact, a manifest for another artifact and an unreachable PageBroker; a commit failure after a successful restore returns a RestoreCleanupError naming the commit step exactly once with the restored PID intact.
Existing assertions on prepare PageBroker ... and nsrestore failed substrings were updated to the new while ... form.
golangci-lint with the agent config, cross-compiled for Linux: clean.
Special notes for your reviewer:

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Checkpoint and restore errors now identify the workflow step where a failure occurred, making failure details more specific.
Restore cleanup failures are reported alongside other cleanup errors, and restored-process validation retains the underlying error details.
Checkpoint and restore failure logs include step context when available.
Failure details are more consistent across checkpoint preparation, artifact handling, manifest validation, GPU setup, storage operations, and restore execution.

Walkthrough
Checkpoint and restore failures now carry step identifiers. The controller includes available identifiers in relevant logs. PageBroker release and commit failures are accumulated as restore cleanup errors.

Summary
Step errors and checkpoint classification agent/internal/executor/step.go, agent/internal/executor/checkpoint.go, agent/internal/executor/checkpoint_test.go
Adds step identifiers, StepError, failStep, and StepOf. Checkpoint failures use step-qualified errors, and tests assert the updated error wording.
Restore classification and cleanup agent/internal/executor/restore.go, agent/internal/executor/restore_test.go
Restore failures use step-qualified errors. PageBroker release and commit failures are added to cleanup errors. Tests cover step extraction, restore classification, and commit-failure cleanup.
Relevant checkpoint and restore logs include the executor step as a structured field when available. A test checks that logs include the field for a named StepError, but not for a plain error.

A suggestion, maybe for a follow-up PR: everything that happens inside nsrestore is one step, "running nsrestore". That covers applying the rootfs diff, the CRIU restore, the CUDA restore and the LSM setup, which is where most real restore failures happen. The steps before it (resolving the artifact, reading the manifest, mounting the bundle) rarely fail. Naming the steps inside nsrestore, and passing the step back in its JSON result, would give the most value here, especially since the troubleshooting guide in the next PR is organized by these steps.
A question about the step type: do we really need a formal step key? StepError, the 22 constants and StepOf make the errors more structured, but they also make the code more complicated. Most of the constants replace wrap text that already named the step (prepare PageBroker restore: ... becomes while preparing PageBroker restore: ...), so the message and the log line already say where the failure came from, and both can be searched. What do the structured step log key and the stable names buy us that the existing wrap text doesn't?

Agreed, and this is where the step names start paying off. We will implement it as a follow-up PR once this stack is in, so the inner steps land on a settled contract.
Scope: six inner steps (reading the manifest inside the placeholder, preparing the CRIU restore, applying the rootfs diff, preparing GPU devices, restoring with CRIU, restoring CUDA state), a step field next to error in nsrestore's JSON result, and the agent turning that back into the step it reports. running nsrestore stays for the launch failures and for an nsrestore that sends no step, so a mixed rollout behaves as today. The guide entry splits accordingly and the drift check enforces the new headings. Surfacing only, no change to how nsrestore is launched, waited for or cleaned up.
The constants are an enumerable list. The drift check in the next PR reads them from step.go and fails when a step has no guide entry. Free text cannot be enumerated, so the guide and the code drift apart silently. The overlay-capture thread above is the live case: a new failure path came in from main without a step, and once it is a constant the check is what catches it next time.
The follow-up you suggested needs stable names too. nsrestore will send its inner step back in the JSON result, and the agent has to turn that back into the same step it reports and logs. That only works with a fixed set of names shared by both binaries, not with whatever the wrap text happened to say.
The structured step key then costs almost nothing and filters cleanly in a log backend, where a substring over the message also matches nested wraps and unrelated lines. StepOf exists only to feed that key.

Update: the follow-up is up early as a draft on top of the guide PR, so it can be read with the stack rather than after it. Same scope as described above.
A restore failure reached the Pod condition and the agent log as a bare

collapsed every failure into one reason and a message, and the controller
logged the error without a key a reader could filter on.

errors. As, so the incompatibility, cleanup and source-kill checks are

- Log the failing step as a structured "step" key on the restore and
checkpoint failure lines.
- Point a failed restore's Restored condition at the agent logs on the
node, where nsrestore's stderr and the CRIU log tail already land.
- A PageBroker commit failure after a successful restore was only logged.
It now rides in the returned cleanup error, which the controller already
logs and reports as a RestoreCleanupFailed warning before completing the
restore. The flow is unchanged: commit is attempted once as before, the
deferred abort still runs, and the restore still completes.
- Join a failed GPU release into the cleanup error instead of building a
second wrapper, so the text no longer repeats itself.
No condition reasons change, so the operator and the end-to-end suite are
untouched.

The condition is read by the restore pod's owner, who usually cannot read
the agent's namespace, and the node is already on the pod. In a vCluster
the node name the pod shows may not be the host's. The step name is what
tells an operator where to look.

The rootfs diff capture can fail the checkpoint since the dump's referenced
files became fatal, and it was the one return in the capture helper without
a step, so the failure reached the condition and the log unnamed. It now
reports under "capturing rootfs diff", after the CRIU dump it follows.

logWithStep backs four controller log lines and had no test. One direct
test now checks that a StepError adds the step key with the step text
and that a plain error adds nothing.
