Explore using OpenTelemetry.
I've previously dabbled in OpenTelemetry years ago and more recently supported an expansion of Datadog coverage, so the telemetry terms aren't completely alien to me. However, this template currently lacks that tracing.
Action items:
- Make telemetry configuration something configurable.
- Wire up existing endpoints with telemetry spans.
- Find at least one reason to use metrics on top of spans.
- Try to abstract the above two points out so that telemetry can be either disabled via configuration or have its implementation pivoted to Datadog.
- Datadog does have a free-trial tier, it might not go amiss to make a branch of our branch and experiment with switching over. Do not make Datadog in by default.
- Explore using some basic credentials use in the local testing setup, and obviously adjust the implementation appropriately.
- In our own words, document all the telemetry usage that we've learned/refreshed ourselves on in a
docs/patterns/ Markdown document.
